Halau Uma: Kahikinui Community Cultural, Educational, and Resilience Center Preliminary Design Technical Assistance Summary Report

The Kahikinui Homestead Community in Maui faces energy resilience challenges due to its remote, off-grid location. This report summarizes preliminary technical assistance to design a microgrid for six modular homes using solar PV, wind, and battery storage. Results indicate that a hybrid PV and battery system, supplemented by small wind turbines, offers a cost-effective, resilient solution supporting energy independence and disaster preparedness.

Synthesis and application of thermally responsive nanofiber coatings for overtemperature monitoring

This study presents a one-pot synthesis route to organometallic nanofibers based on copper thiolate, exhibiting distinctive chemical and physical characteristics. Electron microscopy analysis of morphology and composition revealed 2-10 μm-long, 50-90 nm-diameter hollow and non-hollow fibers composed of copper, sulfur, oxygen, hydrocarbon, and chlorine. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a pronounced mass loss within 120°C-135°C. To elucidate the thermal responsive pathways, the nanofibers were characterized before and after heating. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates that an initially mixed Cu(I)/Cu(II) oxidation states transition to predominantly Cu(I) upon heating. A layer of nanofiber was coated on battery pouch foil and evaluated as a candidate thermally sensitive coating. At elevated temperature (100-130°C), nanofiber coating released volatile organic compounds, sulfide and sulfur dioxide as detected using multiple gas sensors. This thermally responsive gas release/sensing approach provides a potential large-area temperature monitoring strategy, which is particularly relevant where direct temperature measurements of individual batteries is impractical. The results established proof of concept for nanofiber-coated battery pouch foil as overtemperature warning platform that can provide alerts when surface temperatures exceed a critical threshold. More broadly, the ability to form interconnected fiber networks positions copper thiolate nanofiber coatings as promising materials for advanced applications.

Cobalt-free and high-rate stable 5V lithium nickel manganese oxide spinel cathodes enabled via surface oxygen vacancies

Spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 offers both the high-rate, low-cost and safety advantages of LiFePO 4 and the high energy density of LiNiₓMnᵧCo₁₋ₓ₋ᵧO₂ and LiNiₓCoᵧAlzO₂ cathodes. However, the large operating voltage of these materials induces electrolyte oxidation, which degrades the interface and drives Mn dissolution. These reactions are further exacerbated at high rates due to temperature rise. In this study, we discover that ammoniacal treatment followed by annealing introduces a high density of oxygen vacancies in the “near-surface region” of LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 particles. These vacancies release electrons changing the oxidation state of Mn and suppressing its tendency to oxidize the electrolyte. Further, these vacancies enhance the electrode’s electronic conductivity (by ∼3-fold) and Li + diffusivity (by ∼2-fold) greatly improving charge transport, especially when operated at high rates. This results in an across-the-board improvement in self-discharge, specific capacity, energy density, rate capability, coulombic efficiency and cycling stability. When cycled at ∼200 mA g −1 , the capacity fade averaged over 3000 cycles for the surface vacancy-enriched material is ∼0.0167% per cycle compared to an order of magnitude higher fade rate for the baseline material. In conclusion, these findings reveal the potential of targeted surface oxygen vacancy doping to develop cobalt-free and high energy density cathodes that tolerate fast charging and deliver improved cycle life.

Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 : New Lithium Superionic Conductor with Unprecedented Structural Type

Abstract Lithium superionic conductors are pivotal for enabling all‐solid‐state batteries, which aim to replace liquid electrolytes and enhance safety. Herein, we report the discovery of an unprecedented lithium superionic conductor, Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 , featuring a novel structural type and a new composition in the Li–Ge–P–S system. This material exhibits high lithium ionic conductivity of approximately 1.0 mS cm −1 at 303 K with a low activation energy of 0.20(1) eV. It's unique crystal structure was elucidated using three‐dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and further refined through combined powder X‐ray and neutron diffraction analyses. The structure consists of alternating two‐dimensional slabs: one of corner‐sharing GeS 4 tetrahedra and the other of isolated PS 4 tetrahedra, enabling efficient lithium‐ion transport through a tetrahedrally interconnected network of 1D, 2D, and 3D diffusion pathways. This distinctive structural motif provides a novel design strategy for next‐generation solid electrolytes, broadening the structural landscape of lithium superionic conductors. With further advancements in compositional tuning and interfacial engineering, Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 could contribute to the development of high‐performance all‐solid‐state batteries.

Simulating hindered grain boundary diffusion using the smoothed boundary method

Abstract Grain boundaries can greatly affect the transport properties of polycrystalline materials, particularly when the grain size approaches the nanoscale. While grain boundaries often enhance diffusion by providing a fast pathway for chemical transport, some material systems, such as those of solid oxide fuel cells and battery cathode particles, exhibit the opposite behavior, where grain boundaries act to hinder diffusion. To facilitate the study of systems with hindered grain boundary diffusion, we propose a model that utilizes the smoothed boundary method to simulate the dynamic concentration evolution in polycrystalline systems. The model employs domain parameters with diffuse interfaces to describe the grains, thereby enabling solutions with explicit consideration of their complex geometries. The intrinsic error arising from the diffuse interface approach employed in our proposed model is explored by comparing the results against a sharp interface model for a variety of parameter sets. Finally, two case studies are considered to demonstrate potential applications of the model. First, a nanocrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia solid oxide fuel cell system is investigated, and the effective diffusivities are extracted from the simulation results and are compared to the values obtained through mean-field approximations. Second, the concentration evolution during lithiation of a polycrystalline battery cathode particle is simulated to demonstrate the method’s capability.

Decoupling Failure Pathways in Li-O 2 Cells Operated Under Lean Electrolyte Conditions

The operation of lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries under lean electrolyte conditions offers higher energy density but leads to rapid degradation and short cycle life. Although cathode passivation and electrolyte decomposition occur in all regimes, we show that under lean electrolyte conditions, failure is primarily driven by progressive electrolyte consumption at the lithium/solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), rather than by irreversible cathode passivation. Poor wetting of the lithium surface results in heterogeneous SEI growth and high local current densities, which accelerate electrolyte loss and cell failure. Strategies aimed at improving interfacial stability, including optimized wetting and SEI forming additives, significantly extend cycle life without compromising energy density. Our results establish anode-electrolyte interactions as the dominant degradation mechanism under lean electrolyte conditions, and emphasize the need to engineer a stable Li/SEI interface for long-lasting Li-O 2 batteries.

Heterogeneous Solid Electrolyte Interphase Interactions Dictate Interface Instability in Sodium Metal Electrodes

Sodium (Na) metal batteries have attracted recent attention due to their low cost and high abundance of Na. However, the advancement of Na metal batteries is impeded due to key challenges such as dendrite growth, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) fracture, and low Coulombic efficiency. This study examines the coupled electro‐chemo‐mechanical interactions governing the electrodeposition stability and morphological evolution at the Na/electrolyte interface. The SEI heterogeneities influence transport and reaction kinetics leading to the formation of current and stress hotspots during Na plating. Further, it is demonstrated that the heterogeneity‐induced Na metal evolution and its influence on the stress distribution critically affect the mechanical overpotential, contributing to a faster SEI failure. The analysis reveals three distinct failure mechanisms—mechanical, transport, and kinetic—that govern the onset of instabilities at the interface. Finally, a comprehensive comparative study of SEI failure in Na and lithium (Li) metal anodes illustrates that the electrochemical and mechanical characteristics of the SEI are crucial in tailoring the anode morphology and interface stability. This work delineates mechanistic stability regimes cognizant of the SEI attributes and underlying failure modes and offers important guidelines for the design of artificial SEI layers for stable Na metal electrodes.

Tailoring Ion Transport in Li 3‐3y Ho 1+y Cl 6‐x Br x via Transition‐Metal Free Structural Planes and Charge Carrier Distribution

Abstract Localized atomistic disorder in halide‐based solid electrolytes (SEs) can be leveraged to boost Li + mobility. In this study, Li + transport in structurally modified Li 3 HoCl 6 , via Br − introduction and Li + deficiency, is explored. The optimized Li 3‐3 y Ho 1+ y Cl 6‐ x Br x achieves an ionic conductivity of 3.8 mS cm −1 at 25 °C, the highest reported for holmium halide materials. 6,7 Li nuclear magnetic resonance and relaxometry investigations unveil enhanced ion dynamics with bromination, attaining a Li + motional rate neighboring 116 MHz. X‐ray diffraction analyses reveal mixed‐anion‐induced phase transitions with disproportionate octahedral expansions and distortions, creating Ho‐free planes with favorable energetics for Li + migration. Bond valence site energy analysis highlights preferred Li + transport pathways, particularly in structural planes devoid of Ho 3+ blocking effects. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate enhanced Li + diffusion with Br − introduction into Li 3 HoCl 6 . Li‐Ho electrostatic repulsions in the (001) plane presumably drive Li + diffusion into the Ho‐free (002) layer, enabling rapid intraplanar Li + motion and exchange between the 2d and 4h sites. Li 3‐3 y Ho 1+ y Cl 6‐ x Br x also demonstrates good battery cycling stability. These findings offer valuable insights into the intricate correlations between structure and ion transport and will help guide the design of high‐performance fast ion conductors for all‐solid‐state batteries.

Selective ion transport through hydrated micropores in polymer membranes

Abstract Ion-conducting polymer membranes are essential in many separation processes and electrochemical devices, including electrodialysis 1 , redox flow batteries 2 , fuel cells 3 and electrolysers 4,5 . Controlling ion transport and selectivity in these membranes largely hinges on the manipulation of pore size. Although membrane pore structures can be designed in the dry state 6 , they are redefined upon hydration owing to swelling in electrolyte solutions. Strategies to control pore hydration and a deeper understanding of pore structure evolution are vital for accurate pore size tuning. Here we report polymer membranes containing pendant groups of varying hydrophobicity, strategically positioned near charged groups to regulate their hydration capacity and pore swelling. Modulation of the hydrated micropore size (less than two nanometres) enables direct control over water and ion transport across broad length scales, as quantified by spectroscopic and computational methods. Ion selectivity improves in hydration-restrained pores created by more hydrophobic pendant groups. These highly interconnected ion transport channels, with tuned pore gate sizes, show higher ionic conductivity and orders-of-magnitude lower permeation rates of redox-active species compared with conventional membranes, enabling stable cycling of energy-dense aqueous organic redox flow batteries. This pore size tailoring approach provides a promising avenue to membranes with precisely controlled ionic and molecular transport functions.

Interface-induced fast Li+ transport in mixed ionic–electronic conductors

Interfacial instability between lithium metal and solid-state electrolytes limits the performance of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLBs), leading to parasitic reactions, non-uniform Li+ flux, and dendrite growth. Here, we develop a composite interlayer composed of the anti-perovskite Li2OHCl0.75Br0.25 (AP) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to enhance both interfacial stability and ionic transport. The AP–CNT interlayer exhibits enhanced Li+ conductivity arising from interfacial electron transfer from AP to CNTs, which generates a built-in electric field that facilitates Li+ migration. Lithium symmetric cells incorporating this interlayer achieve a high critical current density of 2.4 mA cm−2 at 55 °C. This design integrates chemical robustness with coupled ion–electron transport, offering a generalizable strategy for safe, dendrite-free, and high-performance ASSLBs.

Direct comparison of gamma, electron beam and X-ray radiation effects on the polymers of a pulsed lavage device

Gamma radiation used for sterilization of medical devices is challenged by cobalt-60 supply and commercial capacity. To maintain a robust radiation sterilization marketplace for the rapidly growing single-use medical device industry, investigation of potential alternatives to gamma technology, such as electron beam (e-beam) and X-ray technology, is critical. In this work, we directly compare the effects of radiation source and absorbed dose level on the polymeric materials and function of a commercial pulsed lavage device used for wound care. Product functionality, polymer mechanical, and polymer optical properties were evaluated using standard methods and input from the device manufacturer. Test results show that functionality of the product was not inhibited by radiation although the battery in the device exposed to X-ray exhibited greater voltage loss compared to batteries in products exposed to gamma or e-beam. Statistically significant differences between gamma and e-beam exposure and between gamma and X-ray exposure were also observed for product appearance in terms of yellowness index of several of the polymers considered. Overall, the results of this study support the viability of e-beam and X-ray radiation technologies as alternatives to cobalt-60 gamma technology for sterilization of the single-use pulsed lavage medical device investigated.

Converting Second‐Order Saddle Points to Transition States: New Principles for the Design of 4π Photoswitches

Abstract Molecular photoswitches have demonstrated potential for storing solar energy at the molecular level, with power densities comparable to commercial batteries and hydroelectric energy storage. However, development of efficient photoswitches is hindered by limitations in cyclability and optical properties of existing materials. We here demonstrate that certain limitations in photoswitches based on electrocyclizations stem from the issue of controlling competition between Woodward‐Hoffmann allowed and forbidden pathways. Our approach moves beyond the traditional view of activation barriers and reveals that second‐order saddle points are crucial in dictating the competition between disrotatory and conrotatory pathways. These insights suggest new opportunities to manipulate the competition between these pathways through geometric constraints, fundamentally altering the connectivity of the potential energy surface. Our study also emphasizes the necessity of multi‐reference methods and the need to conduct higher‐dimensional explorations for competing pathways beyond photoswitch design.

Bridging Additive Manufacturing and Electronics Printing in the Age of AI

Printing techniques have been instrumental in developing flexible and stretchable electronics, including organic light-emitting diode displays, organic thin film transistor arrays, electronic skins, organic electrochemical transistors for biosensors and neuromorphic computing, as well as flexible solar cells with low-cost processes such as inkjet printing, ultrasonic nozzle, roll-to-roll coating. The rise of additive manufacturing provides even more opportunities to print electronics in automated and customizable ways. In this work, we will review the current technologies of printing electronics (including printed batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and sensors), especially with 3D printing. In this age of ongoing AI revolution, the application of AI algorithms is discussed in terms of combining them with 3D printing and electronics printing for a future with automated optimization, sustainable design, and customizable and scalable manufacturing.
