Estimating the Benefits of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Usage at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Ultrafine Particle Exposure and Mortalities Reductions

The expanding commercial aviation sector necessitates diverse energy sources, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) have emerged as a promising option. Widespread SAF adoption can help meet transportation fuel demand and offer health benefits for people residing near airports or along airport landing and takeoff (LTO) pathways, where elevated levels of aircraft-derived air pollution often exist. Blending SAF with traditional jet fuels can reduce ultrafine particle (UFP) emissions, which may improve health of near airport population. We analyzed a population of about 8 million people in 1925 census tracts around the Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). We conducted a risk assessment to estimate anticipated UFP reductions for three adoption scenarios using blends of traditional jet fuels with 5, 25, and 50% SAF across all flights landing and taking off from ORD. We calculated baseline estimates of UFP emissions using ORD flight data, a dispersion model, and a calibration function derived from mobile monitoring data. We used this baseline UFP emission profile across the study area to estimate population-weighted UFP, as well as the attributable case reductions (ACRs) and attributable mortality rate reductions (AMRRs) across the demographic distribution around the airport, based on the SAF blending scenarios. We found a positive association of SAF blending with UFP reductions, particularly near the airport and along LTO flight pathways. Our study showed that the population-weighted UFP across different demographics was similar. ACRs were largely dependent on individual demographic populations, while AMRRs for all populations were relatively similar, with an estimated 0.3 (95% range: 0.2−0.3), 1.1 (0.9−1.4), and 1.8 (1.5−2.2) fewer mortalities per 100,000 people per year expected with the adoption of 5, 25, and 50% SAF blends, respectively. This study indicates that communities near ORD, across a range of demographics, may benefit similarly from SAF adoption, thus highlighting how SAF adoption may offer an opportunity to improve health outcomes like aviation UFP-related mortalities around airports.

Three Distinctive Steps for Heterogeneous Nucleation of Tunnel-Structured Mn Oxide on Quartz under Light Exposure

Natural manganese (Mn) oxide coatings, resulting from the heterogeneous nucleation on foreign substances, have garnered interest based on their importance in the reaction with organic substances and in environmental systems. However, the heterogeneous nucleation of the natural Mn oxide coatings still remains elusive. Here, via fast photochemical oxidation of Mn 2+ (aq), we show that Mn(IV) oxide nuclei form and aggregate on quartz in three distinct successive stages: (i) a nanocrystalline film of unaligned grain forms, (ii) nanoislands develop on the film, and (iii) nanorods form on the nanoislands. Each stage has different crystalline structures and forms by aligned attachment of nanoscale precursors on the preceding surface. Crystal lattice analyses confirm the crystalline development, from the short-range order of the Mn oxide film to the long-range order of the nanorods. Also, the heterogeneous nucleation observed in this work produced groutellite-like tunnel structures of Mn oxide on quartz. Furthermore, this revealed pathway of the heterogeneous nucleation can offer a new perspective on the variety of poorly crystalline structures of natural Mn oxides found in the environment, which can affect elemental redox cycles, contaminant sequestration and removal, and soil carbon storage.

Influence of tritium exposure route on vegetation types at the Savannah River Site

Plant, soil, water, and other media from various locations at the Savannah River Site were measured for total tritium (T) content and T speciation to characterize T in these areas, as well as investigate its uptake behavior and the transport of T species in these media. This characterization included the isolation and measurement of T in tritiated water (HTO), and (when possible) exchangeable organic bound T (E-OBT) and non-exchangeable organic bound T (NE-OBT). Two areas of interest were investigated: (1) a holding pond with T-contaminated water and (2) open basins or streams with low to background levels of T. Water in the holding pond is used to irrigate forest plots in the local area as a T remediation approach. This study compares the analytical data for water, soil/sediment, plants, and lichens from these locations. Here, the results indicate that the behavior of T in plants from these areas can be a function of one or more of the following: seasonal precipitation, the plant's primary route of access to the T-contamination (such as water uptake through the root vs. shoot), plant physical location (relative to T-contaminated water sources), plant rooting depth, pond water level, and plant height above the ground. Total T concentrations were lowest in the un-irrigated forest plants, followed by irrigated forest plants, shallow rooting plants near the pond, deep rooting plants further from the pond, and then water-saturated plants. The OBT:HTO and NE-OBT:E-OBT ratios were always greater for plants from irrigated forest plots compared to those from the holding pond.

Accelerating countermeasure candidate discovery for A-series chemical warfare agent exposure

The recent alleged use of A-series chemical warfare agents (CWAs) highlights the urgent need to better understand their inhibition of cholinesterase enzymes and the reported shortcomings of traditional oxime countermeasures. Here, using high-throughput (HT) mass spectrometry (MS) technologies, we characterized the largely unknown inhibition kinetics of A-series CWAs on human acetylcholinesterase (hAChE) and its reactivation by oximes, achieving label-free quantitation at rates of up to 7,000 reactions per hour. Our findings indicate i) A-series agents exhibit inhibitory potencies similar to traditional CWAs like sarin and VX, and ii) bipyridinium-based oximes can reactivate A-series-adducted hAChE in vitro, challenging prior reports on oxime efficacy. These results underscore the need for continued exploration of countermeasure candidates against A-series CWAs and demonstrate the potential of HT-MS for rapidly and safely characterizing emerging toxic chemicals.

SiC Substrate Composition Effect on TGO Scale Growth in EBC Systems During High‐Temperature Steam Exposure

A systematic investigation was conducted on the oxidation behavior of silicon-bond coats within environmental barrier coating (EBC) systems applied to Si-carbide (SiC) substrates, aiming to understand how different underlying SiC substrates influence the bond coat's thermally grown oxide (TGO) and its properties. The study examined (Y/Yb) 2 Si 2 O 7 /Si coatings on three cost-effective surrogate SiC substrates (chemical vapor deposition [CVD]-grown β-SiC, sintered α-SiC, and reaction-bonded [RB] SiC) for SiC fiber /SiC matrix ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Discrepancies in TGO growth were observed, with noticeably higher growth rates reported for the coated CMC specimens than for the four monolithic SiC specimens. The CMC samples produce an amorphous TGO, whereas the other monolithic substrates formed a crystalline TGO, which lowered the oxygen permeability through the SiO 2 scale. In conclusion, the vitrification of the TGO in the (Y/Yb) 2 Si 2 O 7 /Si/CMC system resulted from the migration of boron species from the CMC substrate to the SiO 2 scale, leading to network modification via boron doping.

Did the exposure of coacervate droplets to rain make them the first stable protocells?

Membraneless coacervate microdroplets have long been proposed as model protocells as they can grow, divide, and concentrate RNA by natural partitioning. However, the rapid exchange of RNA between these compartments, along with their rapid fusion, both within minutes, means that individual droplets would be unable to maintain their separate genetic identities. Hence, Darwinian evolution would not be possible, and the population would be vulnerable to collapse due to the rapid spread of parasitic RNAs. In this study, we show that distilled water, mimicking rain/freshwater, leads to the formation of electrostatic crosslinks on the interface of coacervate droplets that not only suppress droplet fusion indefinitely but also allow the spatiotemporal compartmentalization of RNA on a timescale of days depending on the length and structure of RNA. We suggest that these nonfusing membraneless droplets could potentially act as protocells with the capacity to evolve compartmentalized ribozymes in prebiotic environments.

Plastics recycling via plasma-based depolymerization utilizing aqueous and gaseous discharge exposure

This proposed work aims to understand and quantify the effect of self-organization on polymer depolymerization in liquids. Here, the project will explore the role of the formation of large-scale plasma induced flows that occur under self- organization that leads to the convection of plastic particles (micron sized) to the plasma attachment regions. This convention should lead to enhanced transport and higher depolymerization rates. Also, associated with self-organization is the emission of charged droplets in the region of plasma attachment. A key question is do these droplets contain heavily broken up polymer chains or monomers? Is this emission another approach to collection of depolymerized media? These droplets are also charged and contains particles suggesting a means to control emitted media. Currently, plastics upcycling, the conversion of plastics to higher value products, is energy intensive due to high heat requirements (for example thermolysis). Plasma-based treatment offers a greener approach to the depolymerization of plastics and offers the possibility of upcycling to make higher value products such as higher-grade plastics and fuels.

Systemic immunological responses are dependent on sex and ovarian hormone presence following acute inhaled woodsmoke exposure

Rural regions of the western United States have experienced a noticeable surge in both the frequency and severity of acute wildfire events, which brings significant challenges to both public safety and environmental conservation efforts, with impacts felt globally. Identifying factors contributing to immune dysfunction, including endocrinological phenotypes, is essential to understanding how hormones may influence toxicological susceptibility.
