A discussion of recent technology developments for far-infrared bolometric detector focal plane assemblies is provided. Some of the developments include strategies for fabricating high filling fraction background limited-transition edge sensor bolometric detectors, impedance-matched absorber coatings, a micromachined blackbody source, and the capability to fabricate indium bumps on non-planar substrates.

A new mathematical model is presented which describes the image produced by a focal plane shutter-equipped camera. The model is based upon the well-known collinearity condition equations and incorporates both the translational and rotational motion of the camera during the exposure interval. The first differentials of the model with respect to exposure interval, delta t, yield the general matrix expressions for image velocities which may be simplified to known cases. The exposure interval, delta t, may be replaced under certain circumstances with a function incorporating blind velocity and image position if desired. The model is tested using simulated Lunar Orbiter data and found to be computationally stable as well as providing excellent results, provided that some external information is available on the velocity parameters.
Possible large space telescope geometries are studied to determine performance and the effects of misalignments. The results are displayed parametrically as a function of relative back focal distance (RBFD). As RBFD increases, a larger high resolution field is obtained, and misalignment effects become less severe.
Wedge-shaped microchannel electron multiplier array has been proposed to improve sensitivity of focal-plane mass spectrometer by two to four orders of magnitude.
The possibility of meeting the requirements of the amps spectroscopic instrumentation by using a multi-element focal plane detector array in a conventional spectrograph mount was examined. The requirements of the detector array were determined from the optical design of the spectrometer which in turn depends on the desired level of resolution and sensitivity required. The choice of available detectors and their associated electronics and controls was surveyed, bearing in mind that the data collection rate from this system is so great that on-board processing and reduction of data are absolutely essential. Finally, parallel developments in instrumentation for imaging in astronomy were examined, both in the ultraviolet (for the Large Space Telescope as well as other rocket and satellite programs) and in the visible, to determine what progress in that area can have direct bearing on atmospheric spectroscopy.
The design and cost analysis of an accessible focal plane telescope for Spacelab is presented in blueprints, tables, and graphs. Topics covered include the telescope tube, the telescope mounting, the airlock plus Spacelab module aft plate, the instrument adapter, and the instrument package. The system allows access to the image plane with instrumentation that can be operated by a scientist in a shirt sleeve environment inside a Spacelab module.
Aspheric shaping of geodesic lenses in optical waveguides is suggested as a means for correcting spherical aberrations. The technique is complementary to the method of Spiller and Harper, in which geodesic lens aberrations are reduced by thickening the waveguiding layer in the lens region. The properties of a family of oblate-spheroidal lenses with no third-order spherical aberrations are described theoretically. Diffraction-limited performance over apertures up to one-half the full lens aperture is predicted for lenses with true f/numbers (focal length divided by useful aperture) in the range 2-12. By combining spheroidal-shaping and mode-index correction techniques, geodesic lenses free from both third- and fifth-order aberrations can be designed. These lenses show diffraction-limited performance over apertures of a centimeter or more when true f/numbers are in the range 1.5-9.5.
The very low flux from even the brightest (non-solar) X-ray source has discouraged the use of instruments with high spectral resolution because of their inevitably low sensitivity. Mission B of the High Energy Astronomy Observatory will provide the first opportunity for moderate and high resolution spectral studies of celestial X-ray sources with high sensitivity. The Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) described here is the instrument with the highest spectral resolution. It is designed to allow detailed spectral studies of both point and extended celestial sources in the energy range 0.2-3.3 keV with resolutions of 50 to 1000.
The minimum commitment method has been applied to the analysis of creep-rupture data. The method is based on a parameter representing the focal point of convergence of all isothermals when extended to the long or short times necessary for such convergence to occur. The technique may be applied by manual-graphic analysis on computer code. It is illustrated for the nickel-base alloy Astroloy.
The small helium cooled infrared telescope for Spacelab 2 is designed for sensitive mapping of extended, low-surface-brightness celestial sources as well as highly sensitive investigations of the shuttle contamination environment (FPA) for this mission is described as well as the design for a thermally isolated, self-heated J-FET transimpedance amplifier. This amplifier is Johnson noise limited for feedback resistances from less than 10 to the 8th power Omega to greater than 2 x 10 to the 10th power Omega at T = 4.2K. Work on the focal plane array is complete. Performance testing for qualification of the flight hardware is discussed, and results are presented. All infrared data channels are measured to be background limited by the expected level of zodiacal emission.
A study was performed to determine the optimum focal plane configuration including optics, filters and detector-preamplifier selection. The configuration was optimized particularly with respect to minimizing the noise level, but fabrication considerations for a cryogenic environment were also taken into account. The noise terms from source, background, detector electronics and charged particle radiation were quantitatively evaluated. It appears that noise equivalent spectral radiance less than 10 to the -11th W/sq cm per sr per kayser can be achieved between 2.5 and 20 microns.
An analytical technique is described for finding the best focal surfaces for offset-fed dual-reflector antennas. A ray tracing procedure traces the loci of rays incident on the main reflector onto a plane or 'screen' situated perpendicular to a central ray of the antenna system. Given, then, by computer graphics, the best feed locations for azimuth and elevation plane patterns, an aperture diffraction method is used which can compute the sidelobe levels and beamwidths resulting from aperture phase errors on scanned or multibeam patterns. High-magnification Cassegrain or Gregorian antennas, with tilt angles optimised according to Japanese criteria, produce excellent radiation diagrams many beamwidths from the central, unaberrated pattern direction.

An apparatus for eliminating beamsplitter generated optical aberrations in a pupil concentric optical system providing a plurality of spatially separated images on different focal planes or surfaces is presented. The system employs a buried surface beamsplitter having spherically curved entrance and exit faces which are concentric to a system aperture stop with the entrance face being located in the path of a converging light beam directed there from an image forming objective element which is also concentric to the aperture stop.
Performance goals for solid-state detector arrays operating in the pushbroom scan mode for the high-resolution, high-accuracy remote sensing of earth resources from space are discussed and some of the focal plane and system trades involved are identified. Issues in the development of solid-state pushbroom arrays with radiometric calibration to 0.5% precision detector-to-detector over a dynamic range of 1000:1 are considered, with calibration, temporal stability and spectral response conditions noted. Factors influencing the geometric precision of satellite-borne pushbroom scan mode sensors are then examined, including satellite orbit track and attitude errors, and geometric and radiometric correlation between information in the various spectral bands. Approaches to the alignment of linear arrays of thousands of detectors are then discussed that take into account tradeoffs between fabrication and test complexity and ground processing requirements. Continuing science experiments are indicated as necessary to establish tolerances on performance goals.
Seismic data are used to place constraints on the focal depths and fault plane solutions of 16 crustal earthquakes beneath the highest parts of the Tibetan plateau. Synthetic seismograms were computed for large events from 1962 to 1976, and compared with the observed waveforms. All of the events studied are found to have occurred at depths less than 15 km and probably between 5 and 10 km, suggesting that the crust below 10-15 km is essentially aseismic, as in most of the Western United States. Fault-plane solutions show combinations of normal and strike slip faulting with T axes consistently oriented approximately east-west, supporting the inference that the upper crust of Tibet is actively extending in an east-west direction. In addition, solutions for two intermediate-depth events at depths of 90 and 85 km show primarily normal faulting with east-west T axes. Results show that brittle deformation occurs at shallow depths in the crust and in the uppermost mantle, but the lower crust seems to be aseismic.
