S-band antenna phased array communications system

The development of an S-band antenna phased array for spacecraft to spacecraft communication is discussed. The system requirements, antenna array subsystem design, and hardware implementation are examined. It is stated that the phased array approach offers the greatest simplicity and lowest cost. The objectives of the development contract are defined as: (1) design of a medium gain active phased array S-band communications antenna, (2) development and test of a model of a seven element planar array of radiating elements mounted in the appropriate cavity matrix, and (3) development and test of a breadboard transmit/receive microelectronics module.

Lean mixture engine testing and evaluation program

Experimental results for fuel consumption and emissions are presented for a 350 CID (5.7 liter) Chevrolet V-8 engine modified for lean operation with gasoline. The lean burn engine achieved peak thermal efficiency at an equivalence ratio of 0.75 and a spark advance of 60 deg BTDC. At this condition the lean burn engine demonstrated a 10% reduction in brake specific fuel consumption compared with the stock engine; however, NOx and hydrocarbon emissions were higher. With the use of spark retard and/or slightly lower equivalence ratios, the NOx emissions performance of the stock engine was matched while showing a 6% reduction in brake specific fuel consumption. Hydrocarbon emissions exceeded the stock values in all cases. Diagnostic data indicate that lean performance in the engine configuration tested is limited by ignition delay, cycle-to-cycle pressure variations, and cylinder-to-cylinder distribution.

A review of ride comfort studies in the United Kingdom

United Kingdom research which is relevant to the assessment of vehicle ride comfort was reviewed. The findings reported in approximately 80 research papers are outlined, and an index to the areas of application of these studies is provided. The data obtained by different research groups are compared, and it is concluded that, while there are some areas of general agreement, the findings obtained from previous United Kingdom research are insufficient to define a general purpose ride comfort evaluation procedure. The degree to which United Kingdom research supports the vibration evaluation procedure defined in the current International Standard on the evaluation of human exposure to whole-body vibration is discussed.

Fluid flow electrophoresis in space

Four areas relating to free-flow electrophoresis in space were investigated. The first was the degree of improvement over earthbound operations that might be expected. The second area of investigation covered the problems in developing a flowing buffer electrophoresis apparatus. The third area of investigation was the problem of testing on the ground equipment designed for use in space. The fourth area of investigation was the improvement to be expected in space for purification of biologicals. The results of some ground-based experiments are described. Other studies included cooling requirements in space, fluid sealing techniques, and measurement of voltage drop across membranes.

Further development of high temperature-resistant graphite fiber coupling agents

Potential coupling agents for graphite fibers were screened by their effect on the weight losses of Thornel 300, HMS, and HTS fibers at 588K for 200 and 400 hours. Unidirectional laminates were made from HMS and HTS fibers, untreated, and treated with each of the seven coupling agents. The matrix of all laminates was PMR polyimide (PMR-PR). On the basis of the best overall retention of elevated temperature interlaminar shear strength after 200 hours at 588K, composite weight after 200 hours at 588K, and fiber weight after 400 hours at 588K, ventromer T-1 applied from aqueous solution and pyrolyzed PPQ were selected for further evaluation as coupling agents for HTS fiber while ventromer T-2 and pyrolyzed PPQ were selected as coupling agents for HMS fiber. It was shown that pyrolyzed PPQ as a coupling agent improves the oxidative stability of HTS/PMR-PI composites.

Real-time data acquisition system assists engine test program

The mixed-fuels program examined included two major phases: the development of a reformer that would provide an onboard source of hydrogen, and the testing of induction systems and mixed fuels on a conventional V8 engine to verify the concept and define the system's potential. The discussion is limited to the engine testing phase. The testing program is reviewed and the effectiveness of an IDAC data acquisition system in supporting the engine testing program is demonstrated. The data system's application is illustrated by examples.

Differences in the production of noncharacteristic radiation in gaseous and solid targets

Bell et al. (1975) found that the observed yield of noncharacteristic radiation (NCR) for a beam of S atoms hitting Al and Ne targets is of approximately equal magnitude for gaseous and solid targets under similar collision conditions. They concluded that NCR is produced predominantly in single collisions for 55-MeV S atoms on an Al target. This conclusion is tested in a similar collision system by comparing the NCR yields obtained with a 40-MeV Si(6+) ion beam on SiH4 (gaseous target) and on Al (solid target). Corrected X-ray spectra recorded in both cases clearly indicate a difference in the NCR yield for gaseous and solid targets. The results suggest that double collisions dominate the NCR production and that a single-collision production contribution of 15% to 20% is an upper limit for the projectile-target system used.

Continuous-flow electrophoretic separator for biologicals

In the near absence of gravity, a continuous-flow type of electrophoretic separator can be operated with a much thicker separation chamber than is possible under 1 g conditions. This should permit either better resolution or shorter separation time per unit of sample. An apparatus to perform experiments on sounding rockets is under development and will be described. The electrophoresis cell is 5 mm thick by 5 cm wide with 10 cm long electrodes. It is supplied with buffer, sample, and coolant at about 4 C through the use of a passive refrigerant system. UV sample detection and provision for recovery and cold storage of up to 50 sample fractions are now being added to the basic unit. A wide range of operating conditions are electronically programmable into the unit, even up to a short time before flight, and a further range of some parameters can be achieved by exchanging power supplies and by changing gears in the motor drive units of the pump. The preliminary results of some separation studies on various biological products using a commercially available electrophoretic separator are also presented.

International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite mission analysis

The results are presented of the mission analysis performed by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) in support of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. The launch window is open for three separate periods (for a total time of 7 months) during the year extending from July 20, 1977, to July 20, 1978. The synchronous orbit shadow constraint limits the launch window to approximately 88 minutes per day. Apogee boost motor fuel was computed to be 455 pounds (206 kilograms) and on-station weight was 931 pounds (422 kilograms). The target orbit is elliptical synchronous, with eccentricity 0.272 and 24 hour period.

Analysis of torsional spectra of molecules with two C3v internal rotors. IV - The torsional potential function for propane-d0 and -d3

The Raman spectra of gaseous propane-d0 and -d3 have been recorded between 50 and 3500 cm. Considerable torsional data are reported and used to characterize the torsional potential function based on a semirigid model. The average 'effective' V3 for the propanes is found to be 1139 plus or minus 10/cm. The sine-sine coupling term is similar in magnitude but opposite in sign to the cosine-cosine coupling term in propane-d0.

Radiative lifetimes and transition probabilities for electric-dipole delta n equals zero transitions in highly stripped sulfur ions

The beam-foil time-of-flight method has been used to investigate radiative lifetimes and transition rates involving allowed intrashell transitions within the L shell of highly ionized sulfur. The results for these transitions, which can be particularly correlation-sensitive, are compared with current calculations based upon multiconfigurational models.

The Raman spectra of N-14O2 and N-15O2 solids at 20 K

The Raman spectra of N-14O2 and N-15O2 have been studied at 20 K. The far infrared of N-14O2 at 20 K was also measured. The data were assigned on the basis of a C-sub 2 nu molecular model. Normal coordinate calculations were performed for a variety of assignments. The assignment that yielded the best fit is presented. The solid state effects are discussed.

Analysis of torsional spectra of molecules with two internal C/3v/ rotors. III - Far-infrared and gas phase Raman spectra of dimethylamine-d0, -d3, and -d6

The Raman spectra of gaseous dimethylamine-d0, -d3, and -d6 have been recorded between 0 and 4000/cm. The far-infrared spectra have been recorded between 300 and 100/cm. Considerable torsional data are reported and used to characterize the torsional potential function based on a semi-rigid model. The average effective V3 for the dimethylamines was found to be 1052 plus or minus 12/cm. The cos-cos coupling term was approximately 15% of the effective V3, whereas the sine-sine coupling term was of an order of magnitude smaller for (CH3)2NH and (CD3)2NH. However, for the mixed isotope the sine-sine term was found to be negligible and the cos-cos about one-half the value obtained for the other two isotopes.
