Direct ink writing of aqueous-based Gadolinium (III) oxide slurries

Gadolinium (III) oxide (gadolinia, Gd 2 O 3 ) has recently been identified as an intriguing material for applications in the medical, solid oxide fuel cell, and nuclear industries. This interest drives the need for developing and understanding manufacturing techniques that can produce dense Gd 2 O 3 structures. Direct ink writing (DIW), an extrusion-based additive manufacturing method, has also garnered interest because of its capability to produce dense ceramic parts with increased complexity in an economical manner. In this study, DIW was explored as a manufacturing technique for Gd 2 O 3 . Experiments were performed to develop Gd 2 O 3 bearing inks capable of being processed via DIW. Ink solids loading and sintering temperatures were varied to assess their impact on the final density and microstructure. Optimum sintering conditions are proposed and were experimentally verified at a dwell temperature of 1500°C. Gd 2 O 3 samples were successfully manufactured using DIW, achieving densities greater than 96 % of the theoretical density.

Cold-cap structure in a slurry-fed electric melter

We report as glass batch is charged into an electric melter, a cold cap forms on the glass melt surface. Heat transfer to the cold cap from the molten glass below and the melter atmosphere above determines the melting rate. A mathematical model of the cold cap and the experimental kinetic data of the feed-to-glass conversion that were collected for several simulated low-activity and high-level waste melter feeds allowed us to develop relationships between the internal structure of the cold cap, its properties, its thickness, and the internal heat transfer. This contribution shows the distribution of major crystalline phases and the cumulative evolution of gases within the cold cap. It also examines the temperature, conversion degree, and heating rate the melter feed is experiencing during the passage through the cold cap and their effects on the cold-cap bottom temperature and morphology, which are important for the computational fluid dynamics simulations of melters.

Preliminary Technoeconomic Analysis for Power Generation from Coal Water Slurry Using Modular Staged-OMB Gasifier

Trimeric performed a technoeconomic analysis for a proposed 5 MWe gross modular gasification power generation facility. The cost estimate was used to determine the economic advantages of the proposed modular, staged-OMB gasifier in comparison to other modular gasifier designs. The project, Staged OMB for Modular Gasifier/Burner, is led by The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (UK CAER) and supported by East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and Trimeric Corporation. A high-level summary of the findings from this project are presented below.

Combustion of Coal/Oil/Water Slurries

Proposed test setup would measure combustion performance of new fuels by rapidly heating a droplet of coal/oil/water mixture and recording resulting explosion. Such mixtures are being considered as petroleum substitutes in oil-fired furnaces.

Rheological properties of ammonia-water liquids and crystal-liquid slurries - Planetological applications

The laboratory-measured viscosities of liquid mixtures representative of the variety of cryovolcanic substances of the icy satellites are presently noted to be much greater than could be expected on the assumption that end-member molecules are noninteractive; this observation is supported by others concerning molar volumes and vapor pressure relations, which indicate the presence of strong molecular-interaction forces that fundamentally affect the mixtures' physical properties. Since the rheological effects of partial crystallization parallel the characteristics of silicate lavas, icy satellite cryovolcanic morphologies are similarly interpretable with allowances for differences in surface gravities and lava densities.

Making Thin Laminae Of Frozen Alloy Slurries

In new technique, primary objective to develop method to distribute uniformly-thin powder-metal-alloy layers between alternate fiber layers prior to consolidation. Involves use of sheets of frozen alloy powder. These laminae, interspersed with fiber mats, used to make metal/fiber composites. In addition to aerospace applications, this technique, appropriately modified, has potential in the manufacture of future automobile engines or components including molded ceramics.
