Crystal growth and evolution of magnetism in the EuCuP-EuCuAs solid solution

The hexagonal EuMX (M = Cu, Ag, Au; X = P, As, Sb, Bi) compounds host interesting electronic and magnetic properties, with seemingly intertwined topology and transport properties. One key feature of such behavior is the nature of the ordered magnetic structure. In EuCuAs, a topological Hall effect is caused by a conical spin structure that emerges when a field is applied within the easy-plane (H ⊥ c) of the helical ground state that exists below the Neel temperature of T N = 14 K. On the other hand, EuCuP is an easy-axis ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C near 31 K. Here, in this study, we investigate the evolution of the magnetic properties in EuCuAs 1-x P x single crystals with 0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.75. Crystals grown by cooling slowly in a Sn flux possessed macroscale inhomogeneity of As/P, particularly for arsenic-rich crystals. However, growth in a Sn flux via an isothermal dwell at 600 °C produced crystals that were homogeneous within the resolution of the probes utilized to investigate these crystals. The unit cell volumes, Curie-Weiss temperatures, and magnetic transitions trend linearly with composition and the magnetic anisotropy is reduced in the alloys. The magnetization data of crystals with x = 0.16 and 0.24 indicate an easy-plane antiferromagnetic ground state while ferromagneticlike behavior is observed for crystals with x ≥ 0.41. The temperature-dependent magnetization data possess multiple transitions for compositions near EuCuAs 0.75 P 0.25 , revealing a competition of ground states in this arsenic-rich region of the phase diagram. Neutron diffraction data for EuCuP are also presented as a follow up to previous results that revealed a two-step transition at T C ; the observed data were consistent with ferromagnetic order at T = 5K.

A Modified Embedded-Atom Method Potential for a Quaternary Fe-Cr-Si-Mo Solid Solution Alloy

Ferritic-martensitic steels, such as T91, are candidate materials for high-temperature applications, including superheaters, heat exchangers, and advanced nuclear reactors. Considering these alloys’ wide applications, an atomistic understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for their excellent mechano-chemical properties is crucial. Here, we developed a modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) potential for the Fe-Cr-Si-Mo quaternary alloy system—i.e., four major elements of T91—using a multi-objective optimization approach to fit thermomechanical properties reported using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental measurements. Elastic constants calculated using the proposed potential for binary interactions agreed well with ab initio calculations. Furthermore, the computed thermal expansion and self-diffusion coefficients employing this potential are in good agreement with other studies. This potential will offer insightful atomistic knowledge to design alloys for use in harsh environments.

Restoring Escaped Zincate in Rechargeable Alkaline Zinc Batteries with a Seed-in-Nanoshell Design

Rechargeable alkaline zinc batteries are promising candidates for safe and low-cost energy storage, but suffer from ZnO dissolution that causes irreversible active material loss and rapid capacity decay. Here, we report a seed-in-nanoshell ZnO anode architecture that mitigates dissolution by combining physical confinement with electrochemical restoration of dissolved zincate species. ZnO particles are encapsulated within an ion-sieving carbon nanoshell that restricts zincate diffusion, maintains electrical conductivity, and stabilizes repeated solid–solution–solid transformations. Silver (Ag) nanoparticles incorporated into the nanoshell act as zincophilic nucleation seeds, lowering the Zn deposition barrier and directing the redeposition of dissolved zincate back to metallic Zn during charging. This confinement-enabled restoration mechanism converts zincate dissolution from an irreversible loss pathway into a recoverable process, enabling improved performance under harsh test conditions. The anode also delivers 227.9 mAh g −1 at −40 °C. Finally, a scalable tens-of-gram synthesis of ZnO@Ag is demonstrated, underscoring the practical potential of this strategy for advanced aqueous zinc batteries.

Liquid state properties and solidification features of the pseudo binary BaS-La 2 S 3

The high temperature thermodynamic properties of chalcogenides materials based on BaS remain elusive. Herein the pseudo binary BaS-La 2 S 3 is investigated above 1573 K. The liquid properties of BaS-La 2 S 3 are measured by means of high resolution in-situ visualization coupled with thermal arrest measurements in a thermal imaging furnace. This enables to report the first observation of such melts in a container-less setting. The melting points of BaS and La 2 S 3 are revisited at 2454 K and 2004 K respectively. La 2 S 3 demonstrates a high stability in its liquid state, in strike difference with the sublimation observed for BaS. BaS is however partially stabilized with the addition of few percents of La 2 S 3 . The remarkable chemical and thermal stability of La 2 S 3 -rich samples contrasts with the partial decomposition and high vapor pressure observed for BaS-rich samples. Observations and analysis of the solidified samples suggest three different solid solutions. Solid and liquid densities are investigated along the different compositions, supporting a first estimate of the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient for La 2 S 3 .

Ab initio investigation of elastic properties of dilute Cu alloys for high-gradient accelerating structures

The elastic properties and solid solution strengthening of several Cu alloys that may be promising for high gradient applications were studied using ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. Specifically, the temperature and solute concentration dependence of elastic properties including bulk and shear moduli, thermal expansion coefficient, and heat capacity of these alloys were calculated. We found that the bulk and shear moduli are linearly dependent on the solute concentration in the dilute regime and change significantly for different Cu alloys. The thermal expansion coefficient and heat capacity are comparatively less sensitive to solute concentrations. Solid solution strengthening is observed to be linearly correlated with the change of lattice parameter of Cu. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the elastic properties of Cu alloys, which is key for predicting their performance at high gradient in normal conducting accelerating structures.

Snapshots of Ce 70 Toroid Assembly from Solids and Solution

Crystallization at the solid–liquid interface is difficult to spectroscopically observe and therefore challenging to understand and ultimately control at the molecular level. The Ce70-torroid formulated [Ce IV 70 (OH) 36 (O) 64 (SO 4 ) 60 (H 2 O) 10 ] 4– , part of a larger emerging family of M IV 70 -materials (M = Zr, U, Ce), presents such an opportunity. We elucidated assembly mechanisms by the X-ray scattering (small-angle scattering and total scattering) of solutions and solids as well as crystallizing and identifying fragments of Ce 70 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Fragments show evidence for templated growth (Ce 5 , [Ce 5 (O) 3 (SO 4 ) 12 ] 10- ) and modular assembly from hexamer (Ce 6 ) building units (Ce 13 , [Ce 13 (OH) 6 (O) 12 (SO 4 ) 14 (H 2 O) 14 ] 6– and Ce 62 , [Ce 62 (OH) 30 (O) 58 (SO 4 ) 58 ] 14- ). Ce 62 , an almost complete ring, precipitates instantaneously in the presence of ammonium cations as two torqued arcs that interlock by hydrogen boding through NH 4 + , a structural motif not observed before in inorganic systems. The room temperature rapid assemblies of both Ce 70 and Ce 62 , respectively, by the addition of Li + and NH 4 + , along with ion-exchange and redox behavior, invite exploitation of this emerging material family in environmental and energy applications.
