Approaching Solar Maximum 24 with Stereo-Multipoint Observations of Solar Energetic Particle Events

Since the beginning of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission at the end of 2006, the two spacecraft have now separated by more than 130◦ degrees from the Earth. A 360-degree view of the Sun has been possible since February 2011, providing multipoint in situ and remote sensing observations of unprecedented quality. Combining STEREO observations with near-Earth measurements allows the study of solar energetic particle (SEP) events over a wide longitudinal range with minimal radial gradient effects. This contribution provides an overview of recent results obtained by the STEREO/IMPACT team in combination with observations by the ACE and SOHO spacecraft. We focus especially on multi-spacecraft investigations of SEP events. The large longitudinal spread of electron and 3He-rich events as well as unusual anisotropies will be presented and discussed.

An Integrated High-Speed Microstructural Characterization Method Using Simultaneous XRD, Stereo-DIC, and PCI

High-speed characterization of the deformation mechanisms in polycrystalline metals requires the quantification of full strain fields and local microstructural evolutions simultaneously. In this paper, we present a novel experimental method to integrate phase-contrast imaging (PCI), stereographic digital image correlation (stereo-DIC), and full-ring X-ray diffraction (XRD) to allow for the simultaneous characterization of polycrystalline metals at 1MHz or higher. A Kolsky bar was integrated into the synchrotron X-ray source in Sector 32 ID-B at the Advance Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. When the sample is dynamically loaded, the diagnostic methods of full-ring XRD, PCI, and stereo-DIC are properly synchronized to record the deformation behavior at both continuum and microstructural scales as a function of the loading history. An advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) is used as a model material to demonstrate the capabilities of this new experimental method.

Four dimensional observations of clouds from geosynchronous orbit using stereo display and measurement techniques on an interactive information processing system

Simultaneous Geosynchronous Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 1 km resolution visible image pairs can provide quantitative three dimensional measurements of clouds. These data have great potential for severe storms research and as a basic parameter measurement source for other areas of meteorology (e.g. climate). These stereo cloud height measurements are not subject to the errors and ambiguities caused by unknown cloud emissivity and temperature profiles that are associated with infrared techniques. This effort describes the display and measurement of stereo data using digital processing techniques.

Viking orbiter stereo imaging catalog

The extremely long missions of the two Viking Orbiter spacecraft produced a wealth of photos of surface features. Many of which can be used to form stereo images allowing the earth-bound student of Mars to examine the subject in 3-D. This catalog is a technical guide to the use of stereo coverage within the complex Viking imaging data set. Since that data set is still growing (January, 1980, about 3 1/2 years after the mission began), a second edition of this catalog is planned with completion expected about November, 1980.

Stereo radar for mapping and interpretation

The use of terrain imaging radar to extract elevation information by stereo viewing and measurement is discussed. Either a three dimensional visual model or elevation measurements may be obtained by simultaneous viewing or differential measurement of images obtained by a side-looking radar from two different flightpaths. Expressions describing radar image geometry, model vertical exaggeration, and stereo measurement accuracy are derived. The dependence of the exaggeration and accuracy on system parameters and key system errors is derived, discussed, and illustrated by application to several airborne and spaceborne systems and system concepts, and the results of some preliminary measurements of imagery from two airborne and one spaceborne system are given.

Stereosat - A global digital stereo imaging mission

The objectives of the Stereosat mission are to obtain worldwide cloud-free stereo coverage at two base-height ratios and with a ground IFOV of 15 m; and to obtain stereo data in digital form that can be merged with monoscopic digital terrain models derived directly from the image data stream. This paper reviews Stereosat, with consideration given to the geological mapping requirements, digital data bases, the mission concept, system lifetime, instrument parameters, spacecraft parameters, and geometric accuracy.

Cloud top structure of a tornadic thunderstorm from 3 min interval stereo satellite images compared with radar and other observations

Cloud heights from 3 min interval GOES EAST/GOES WEST stereo pairs are shown to provide an important new tool for studying severe convective storms with potential for the detection of severe local storms. It is possible to use these data for observing cloud top structure as a function of time on a size scale of few kilometers with quantitative height measurements with relative and absolute accuracies on the order of + or - 0.5 km. It is noted that stereo height measurements detect cirrus anvil cloud decks at two altitudes corresponding to a lower stable layer and the main tropopause.

Icing flight research: Aerodynamic effects of ice and ice shape documentation with stereo photography

Aircraft icing flight research was performed in natural icing conditions. A data base consisting of icing cloud measurements, ice shapes, and aerodynamic measurements is being developed. During research icing encounters the icing cloud was continuously measured. After the encounter, the ice accretion shapes on the wing were documented with a stereo camera system. The increase in wing section drag was measured with a wake survey probe. The overall aircraft performance loss in terms of lift and drag coefficient changes was obtained by steady level speed/power measurements. Selective deicing of the airframe components was performed to determine their contributions to the total drag increase. Engine out capability in terms of power available was analyzed for the iced aircraft. It was shown that the stereo photography system can be used to document ice shapes in flight and that the wake survey probe can measure increases in wing section drag caused by ice. On one flight, the wing section drag coefficient (c sub d) increased approximately 120 percent over the uniced baseline at an aircraft angle of attack of 6 deg. On another flight, the aircraft darg coefficient (c sub d) increased by 75 percent over the uniced baseline at an aircraft lift coefficient (C sub d) of 0.5.

Optical stereo video signal processor

An otpical video signal processor is described which produces a two-dimensional cross-correlation in real time of images received by a stereo camera system. The optical image of each camera is projected on respective liquid crystal light valves. The images on the liquid crystal valves modulate light produced by an extended light source. This modulated light output becomes the two-dimensional cross-correlation when focused onto a video detector and is a function of the range of a target with respect to the stereo camera. Alternate embodiments utilize the two-dimensional cross-correlation to determine target movement and target identification.

An application of the MPP to the interactive manipulation of stereo images of digital terrain models

Massively Parallel Processor algorithms were developed for the interactive manipulation of flat shaded digital terrain models defined over grids. The emphasis is on real time manipulation of stereo images. Standard graphics transformations are applied to a 128 x 128 grid of elevations followed by shading and a perspective projection to produce the right eye image. The surface is then rendered using a simple painter's algorithm for hidden surface removal. The left eye image is produced by rotating the surface 6 degs about the viewer's y axis followed by a perspective projection and rendering of the image as described above. The left and right eye images are then presented on a graphics device using standard stereo technology. Performance evaluations and comparisons are presented.

A stereo model based upon mechanisms of human binocular vision

A model for stereo vision, which is based on the human-binocular vision system, is proposed. Data collected from studies of neurophysiology of the human binocular system are discussed. An algorithm for the implementation of this stereo vision model is derived. The algorithm is tested on computer-generated and real scene images. Examples of a computer-generated image and a grey-level image are presented. It is noted that the proposed method is computationally efficient for depth perception, and the results indicate accuracies that are noise tolerant.

Computing 3-D structure of rigid objects using stereo and motion

Work performed as a step toward an intelligent automatic machine vision system for 3-D imaging is discussed. The problem considered is the quantitative 3-D reconstruction of rigid objects. Motion and stereo are the two clues considered in this system. The system basically consists of three processes: the low level process to extract image features, the middle level process to establish the correspondence in the stereo (spatial) and motion (temporal) modalities, and the high level process to compute the 3-D coordinates of the corner points by integrating the spatial and temporal correspondences.

Evaluation of off-road terrain with static stereo and monoscopic displays

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is currently funding research into the design of a Mars rover vehicle. This unmanned rover will be used to explore a number of scientific and geologic sites on the Martian surface. Since the rover can not be driven from Earth in real-time, due to lengthy communication time delays, a locomotion strategy that optimizes vehicle range and minimizes potential risk must be developed. In order to assess the degree of on-board artificial intelligence (AI) required for a rover to carry out its' mission, researchers conducted an experiment to define a no AI baseline. In the experiment 24 subjects, divided into stereo and monoscopic groups, were shown video snapshots of four terrain scenes. The subjects' task was to choose a suitable path for the vehicle through each of the four scenes. Paths were scored based on distance travelled and hazard avoidance. Study results are presented with respect to: (1) risk versus range; (2) stereo versus monocular video; (3) vehicle camera height; and (4) camera field-of-view.
