Data acquisition and reduction for the University of Virginia superconducting magnetic suspension and balance facility

The problems associated with data acquisition and reduction in the U.Va. superconducting magnetic suspension and balance facility are similar to those in free-flight ranges (or tunnels). The model undergoes a Quasi-six-degree of freedom motion which must be monitored both in position and angular orientation problem is made more difficult because geometric constraints prevent direct visual access to the model in the Mach 3 wind tunnel. The methods, accuracies and problems associated with the acquisition of data are discussed.

Data acquisition and slow control interface for the Mu2e experiment

The Mu2e experiment at the Fermilab Muon Campus will search for the coherent neutrinoless conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement by a factor of 10000 over existing limits. The Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) uses otsdaq as the online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) solution. Developed at Fermilab, otsdaq integrates both the artdaq DAQ and the art analysis frameworks for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is an online DAQ software suite with a focus on flexibility and scalability and provides a multi-user, web-based, interface accessible through a web browser. The data stream from the detector subsystems is read by a software filter algorithm that selects events which are combined with the data flux coming from a cosmic ray veto system. The Detector Control System (DCS) has been developed using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) open source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. The DCS system has been integrated into otsdaq. A prototype of the TDAQ and the DCS systems has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. In this study, we report on the progress of the integration of this prototype in the online otsdaq software.

Development of a simple, self-contained flight test data acquisition system

The system concepts and the flight test program results for a NASA designed in-flight data acquisition system are described. The system draws power from a rechargeable battery pack and intrudes on the aircraft systems only with a total pressure probe, a static pressure probe, and control position transducers, which are simply taped to the frame. A 4000 byte microcomputer forms the heart of the data recording system for cassette tape storage, and is expansion coupled to an eight-bit interactive microcomputer which interfaces with a transducer package for 16-channel demultiplexing. The transducers, ranges, and accuracies are listed, and a five/sec data acquisition rate minimum requirement is noted, although a 10/sec rate is used. The system components are detailed, along with the control and data processing procedures, and the results of dynamic flight testing are presented.

Asynchronous x-ray multiprobe data acquisition for x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

Laser pump X-ray Transient Absorption (XTA) spectroscopy offers unique insights into photochemical and photophysical phenomena. X-ray Multiprobe data acquisition (XMP DAQ) is a technique that acquires XTA spectra at thousands of pump-probe time delays in a single measurement, producing highly self-consistent XTA spectral dynamics. In this work, we report two new XTA data acquisition techniques that leverage the high performance of XMP DAQ in combination with High Repetition Rate (HRR) laser excitation: HRR-XMP and Asynchronous X-ray Multiprobe (AXMP). HRR-XMP uses a laser repetition rate up to 200 times higher than previous implementations of XMP DAQ and proportionally increases the data collection efficiency at each time delay. This allows HRR-XMP to acquire more high-quality XTA data in less time. AXMP uses a frequency mismatch between the laser and x-ray pulses to acquire XTA data at a flexibly defined set of pump-probe time delays with a spacing down to a few picoseconds. AXMP introduces a novel pump-probe synchronization concept that acquires data in clusters of time delays. Further, the temporally inhomogeneous distribution of acquired data improves the attainable signal statistics at early times, making the AXMP synchronization concept useful for measuring sub-nanosecond dynamics with photon-starved techniques like XTA. In this paper, we demonstrate HRR-XMP and AXMP by measuring the laser-induced spectral dynamics of dilute aqueous solutions of Fe(CN) 6 4₋ and [Fe II (bpy) 3 ] 2+ (bpy: 2,2'-bipyridine), respectively.

The Data Acquisition System for Phase-III of the BeEST Experiment

The BeEST experiment is a precision laboratory search for physics beyond the standard model that measures the electron capture decay of 7 Be implanted into superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detectors. For Phase-III of the experiment, we constructed a continuously sampling data acquisition system to extract pulse shape and timing information from 16 STJ pixels offline. Four additional pixels are read out with a fast list-mode digitizer, and one with a nuclear MCA already used in the earlier limit-setting phases of the experiment. Here, we present the performance of the data acquisition system and discuss the relative advantages of the different digitizers.

Status of the data acquisition, trigger, and slow control systems of the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab

The Mu2e experiment at the Fermilab will search for a coherent neutrinoless conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement by a factor of 10,000 over existing limits. In this work, the Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) uses otsdaq framework as the online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) solution. Developed at Fermilab, otsdaq integrates several framework components — an artdaq-based DAQ, an art-based event processing, and an EPICS-based detector control system (DCS), and provides a uniform multi-user interface to its components through a web browser. Data streams from the Mu2e tracker and calorimeter are handled by the artdaq-based DAQ and processed by a one-level software trigger implemented within the art framework. Events accepted by the trigger have their data combined, post-trigger, with the separately read out data from the Mu2e Cosmic Ray Veto system. Foundation of the Mu2e DCS, EPICS – an Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System – is an open-source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. A prototype of the TDAQ and the DCS systems has been built and tested over the last three years at Fermilab’s Feynman Computing Center, and now the production system installation is underway. This work presents their status and focus on the installation plans and procedures for racks, workstations, network switches, gateway computers, DAQ hardware, slow controls implementation, and testing.

Prototype Data Acquisition and Slow Control Systems for the Mu2e Experiment

The Mu2e experiment at the Fermilab Muon Campus will search for the coherent neutrinoless conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus with a sensitivity improvement by a factor of 10 000 over existing limits. Such a charged lepton flavor-violating reaction probes new physics at a scale unavailable with direct searches at either present or planned high-energy colliders. The Mu2e Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) system exploits otsdaq as its online Data Acquisition System (DAQ) solution. Furthermore, developed at Fermilab, otsdaq integrates both the artdaq DAQ and the art analysis frameworks for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is an online DAQ software suite with a focus on flexibility and scalability and provides a multi-user, web-based, interface accessible through a web browser. The read out controllers (ROCs) stream out zero-suppressed data continuously from the detector subsystems to the data transfer controllers (DTCs). The data stream is then read over the peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events which are combined with the data flux coming from a cosmic-ray veto (CRV) system. The detector control system (DCS) has been developed using the experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS) open source platform for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving. The DCS has been integrated into otsdaq. A prototype of the TDAQ system and the DCS has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. In this article, we report on the progress of the integration of this prototype in the online otsdaq software.

Operation and design considerations for unsteady data acquisition with PC-based systems in high Reynolds number hypersonic flowfields

Operation and design considerations for personal-computer-based data acquisition are analyzed, and a system is created that is portable, inexpensive, and capable of high-frequency response. This system performed well when given an extensive analysis of the characteristics of the radio-frequency noise in the test environment. The system architecture is well-suited for support of high-frequency data acquisition from both pressure transducers and high-frequency-response thermocouple gauges. As configured, the system provides a data resolution of approximately 0.09 psia and 0.56 F. Considering the constraints placed upon this design, this data resolution is acceptable. The $5000 budget did require use of an existing PC and rental of signal-conditioning equipment.

Exploring MDSplus data-acquisition software and custom devices

MDSplus is a software tool designed for data acquisition, storage, and analysis of complex scientific experiments. Over the years, MDSplus has primarily been used for data management for fusion experiments. This paper demonstrates that MDSplus can be used for a much wider variety of systems and experiments. We present a step-by-step tutorial describing how to create a simple experiment, manage the data, and analyze it using MDSplus and Python. To this end, a custom example device was developed to be used as the data source. This device was built on an open-source electronic hardware platform, and it consists of a microcontroller and two sensors. Finally, we read data from these sensors, store it in MDSplus, and use JupyterLab to visualize and process it.

Escort - A data acquisition and display system to support research testing

A combination of a central minicomputer and test-site microcomputers has been adopted to provide on-line data acquisition and display service for a large number of different research programs. By integrating the data acquisition and recording functions in the minicomputer/microcomputer system, rapidly updated displays of selected data in terms of engineering units may be obtained. The system described here is primarily designed for steady-state test conditions, but may also provide data on slow transients associated with changing experimental conditions. Application of the system to full-scale jet engine tests, ion thruster assessments and anechoic chamber analyses are mentioned.
