Hierarchical microstructural parameters governing electrical and thermal conductivity in Al-based eutectic systems

Enhancing conductivity properties of aluminum alloys can drive superior performance and efficiency across diverse engineering applications, yet currently commercially available Al casting alloys are severely limited in electrical and thermal conductivity. There is a general understanding that the presence of any defects and alloying elements within Al will inevitably lower conductivity properties. However, there is a lack of comparative studies evaluating the intricate interplay between the microstructural parameters and conductivity properties across cast Al-based eutectic systems. Therefore, this study bridges this gap by conducting a comparative study across hypoeutectic alloy compositions consisting of 50 % primary Al and 50 % eutectic region to elucidate the key parameters that dictate conductivity properties. This research contributes to advancing the understanding of alloy design opportunities for high conductivity, high strength castable Al alloys.

High-frequency electrical behavior in V 3 O 5 thin films

Vanadium oxides are known for their metal–insulator transition (MIT), with V 3 O 5 being notable for its transition temperature exceeding room temperature. At about 430 K, this material shows a change in crystal symmetry accompanied with one order of magnitude increase in its electrical conductivity and alterations in its optical properties. Although the property changes during the MIT in V 3 O 5 are less pronounced than those observed in VO 2 , its transition temperature is 90 K higher, making it appealing for applications requiring elevated temperatures. In this article, the high-frequency characteristics were determined in a V 3 O 5 two-terminal device in the range from 5 to 35 GHz. The S-parameters showed that the return loss at room temperature was close to −1.5 dB, and the isolation between ports was approximately −50 dB. At temperatures above the metal–insulator transition, the isolation decreased to around −40 dB at 35 GHz. For S11 and S22, similar behavior was observed at room temperature, with a notable change in the S-parameter phase of the device. This behavior suggests that V 3 O 5 may function well as a capacitor because the considerable change in phase could control the flow of electrical signals in devices. This property also may be used for matching purposes, especially considering its response to temperature changes. Additionally, conductivity calculation from S-parameters shows a decrease of approximately two orders of magnitude at 500 K and one order of magnitude at 300 K compared to DC values. These findings highlight V 3 O 5 potential for integration into radio frequency devices that demand consistent performance in high-temperature environments.

Heterogeneous Integration of Freestanding Bilayer Oxide Membrane for Multiferroicity

Transition metal oxides exhibit a plethora of electrical and magnetic properties described by their order parameters. In particular, ferroic orderings offer access to a rich spectrum of fundamental physics phenomena, in addition to a range of technological applications. The heterogeneous integration of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials is a fruitful way to design multiferroic oxides. The realization of freestanding heterogeneous membranes of multiferroic oxides is highly desirable. In this study, epitaxial BaTiO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 freestanding bilayer membranes are fabricated using pulsed laser epitaxy. The membrane displays ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism above room temperature accompanying the finite magnetoelectric coupling constant. Further, this study reveals that a freestanding heterostructure can be used to manipulate the structural and emergent properties of the membrane. In the absence of the strain caused by the substrate, the change in orbital occupancy of the magnetic layer leads to the reorientation of the magnetic easy-axis, that is, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These results of designing multiferroic oxide membranes open new avenues to integrate such flexible membranes for electronic applications.

Glass Design Using Machine Learning Property Models with Prediction Uncertainties: Nuclear Waste Glass Formulation

The United States Department of Energy is responsible for managing the legacy nuclear waste stored in underground tanks at the Hanford Site. The waste will be separately vitrified as low-activity waste and high-level waste fractions. Waste glass formulation algorithms have been traditionally developed using partial quadratic mixture property-composition models. Recently, machine learning (ML) techniques have been used to predict glass properties and discover new glass materials for nuclear waste vitrification, and these advancements can be utilized to improve waste glass composition design. In this proof-of-principle study, ML algorithms such as Gaussian process regression (GPR) were used to interpolate glass properties (e.g., viscosity, electrical conductivity, chemical durability). After selecting appropriate sets of GPR hyper-parameters for each property, an optimization program was developed to formulate glass compositions to maximize waste loading while simultaneously satisfying property within constraints. The results of the ML-based waste loadings and glass compositions were compared to those obtained using the traditional methods. Comparing to the previous glass design framework, the ML-based optimization methods offer improved glass designs and a streamlined approach to generation of optimally designed data and near real-time updates.

Decoupling the metal insulator transition and crystal field effects of VO 2

VO 2 is a highly correlated electron system which has a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) with a dramatic change of conductivity accompanied by a first-order structural phase transition (SPT) near room temperature. The origin of the MIT is still controversial and there is ongoing debate over whether an SPT induces the MIT and whether the T c can be engineered using artificial parameters. We examined the electrical and local structural properties of Cr- and Co-ion implanted VO 2 (Cr-VO 2 and Co-VO 2 ) films using temperature-dependent resistance and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the V K edge. The temperature-dependent electrical resistance measurements of both Cr-VO 2 and Co-VO 2 films showed sharp MIT features. The T c values of the Cr-VO 2 and Co-VO 2 films first decreased and then increased relative to that of pristine VO 2 as the ion flux was increased. The pre-edge peak of the V K edge from the Cr-VO 2 films with a Cr ion flux ≥ 10 13 ions/cm 2 showed no temperature-dependent behavior, implying no changes in the local density of states of V 3d t 2g and e g orbitals during MIT. Extended XAFS (EXAFS) revealed that implanted Cr and Co ions and their tracks caused a substantial amount of structural disorder and distortion at both vanadium and oxygen sites. The resistance and XAFS measurements revealed that VO 2 experiences a sharp MIT when the distance of V–V pairs undergoes an SPT without any transitions in either the VO 6 octahedrons or the V 3d t 2g and eg states. This indicates that the MIT of VO 2 occurs with no changes of the crystal fields.

Crystal-field states and defect levels in candidate quantum spin ice Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7

Here, we report the synthesis of powder and single-crystal samples of cerium pyrohafnate and their characterization using neutron diffraction, thermogravimetry and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We evaluate the amount of nonmagnetic Ce 4+ defects and use this result to interpret the spectrum of crystal-electric field transitions observed using inelastic neutron scattering. The analysis of these single-ion transitions indicates the dipole-octupole nature of the ground-state doublet and a significant degree of spin-lattice coupling. The single-ion properties calculated from the crystal-electric field parameters obtained spectroscopically are in good agreement with bulk magnetic susceptibility data down to about 1 K. Below this temperature, the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a correlated regime without showing any sign of magnetic long-range order or freezing down to 0.08 K. We conclude that Ce 2 Hf 2 O 7 is another candidate to investigate exotic correlated states of quantum matter, such as the octupolar quantum spin ice recently argued to exist in the isostructural compounds Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 and Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 .

Volcanic electrification: recent advances and future perspectives

Abstract The electrification of volcanic plumes has been described intermittently since at least the time of Pliny the Younger and the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius. Although sometimes disregarded in the past as secondary effects, recent work suggests that the electrical properties of volcanic plumes reveal intrinsic and otherwise inaccessible parameters of explosive eruptions. An increasing number of volcanic lightning studies across the last decade have shown that electrification is ubiquitous in volcanic plumes. Technological advances in engineering and numerical modelling, paired with close observation of recent eruptions and dedicated laboratory studies (shock-tube and current impulse experiments), show that charge generation and electrical activity are related to the physical, chemical, and dynamic processes underpinning the eruption itself. Refining our understanding of volcanic plume electrification will continue advancing the fundamental understanding of eruptive processes to improve volcano monitoring. Realizing this goal, however, requires an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of volcanology, atmospheric science, atmospheric electricity, and engineering. Our paper summarizes the rapid and steady progress achieved in recent volcanic lightning research and provides a vision for future developments in this growing field.

Sensor discriminators and methods for detecting electrical property changes in a metal organic framework

A sensor discriminator for detecting a gaseous substance includes a power source, a discrimination module, a sensor simulator that simulates a metal organic framework under at least one simulation condition, a simulation circuitry electrically coupling the sensor simulator to the power source and the discrimination module, and a discriminator circuitry that electrically couples the power source and the discrimination module to a gas capture probe. The discrimination module compares a discrimination pulse and a simulation pulse from the power source after the discrimination pulse passes through a metal organic framework of the gas capture sensor and the simulation pulse passes through a simulation component of the sensor simulator. The discrimination module causes a discriminator output that includes the comparison of the discrimination pulse to the simulation pulse. An electrical property of the discrimination pulse depends on an electrical parameter of the metal organic framework that is augmented by the gaseous substance.

Magneto-optical measurement of magnetic field and electrical current on a short pulse high energy pulsed power accelerator

We describe a direct magneto-optical approach to measuring the magnetic field driven by a narrow pulse width (<10 ns), 20 kA electrical current flow in the transmission line of a high energy pulsed power accelerator. The magnetic field and electrical current are among the most important operating parameters in a pulsed power accelerator and are critical to understanding the properties of the radiation output. However, accurately measuring these fields and electrical currents using conventional pulsed power diagnostics is difficult due to the strength of ionizing radiation and electromagnetic interference. Our approach uses a fiber coupled laser beam with a rare earth element sensing crystal sensor that is highly resistant to electromagnetic interference and does not require external calibration. Here, we focus on device theory, operating parameters, results from an experiment on a high energy pulsed power accelerator, and comparison to a conventional electrical current shunt sensor.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe 2 under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 remains elusive. This puzzle stems from reports of either a single or a double superconducting transition at ambient pressure as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To address this issue, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of UTe 2 under compressive uniaxial stress σ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature T c of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with σ along [100] and [110] but increases with σ along [001]. Aside from its effect on T c , c-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity. Importantly, an in-plane shear stress σ xy does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of σ xy ≈ 0.17GPa. Furthermore, this result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 may be single component at ambient pressure.

Conformal Pressure and Fast-Charging Li-Ion Batteries

Batteries capable of extreme fast-charging (XFC) are a necessity for the deployment of electric vehicles. Material properties of electrodes and electrolytes along with cell parameters such as stack pressure and temperature have coupled, synergistic, and sometimes deleterious effects on fast-charging performance. We develop a new experimental testbed that allows precise and conformal application of electrode stack pressure. We focus on cell capacity degradation using single-layer pouch cells with graphite anodes, LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC532) cathodes, and carbonate-based electrolyte. In the tested range (10–125 psi), cells cycled at higher pressure show higher capacity and less capacity fading. Additionally, Li plating decreases with increasing pressure as observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical imaging. While the loss of Li inventory from Li plating is the largest contributor to capacity fade, electrochemical and SEM examination of the NMC cathodes after XFC experiments show increased secondary particle damage at lower pressure. We infer that the better performance at higher pressure is due to more homogeneous reactions of active materials across the electrode and less polarization through the electrode thickness. Our study emphasizes the importance of electrode stack pressure in XFC batteries and highlights its subtle role in cell conditions.

RODeO (Revenue Operation and Device Optimization Model) [SWR 20-67]

The Revenue, Operation, and Device Optimization (RODeO) model explores optimal system design and operation considering different levels of grid integration, equipment cost, operating limitations, financing, and credits and incentives. RODeO is a price-taker model formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model in the GAMS modeling platform. The objective is to maximizes the net revenue for a collection of equipment at a given site. The equipment includes generators (e.g., gas turbine, steam turbine, solar, wind, hydro, fuel cells, etc.), storage systems (batteries, pumped hydro, gas-fired compressed air energy storage, long-duration systems, hydrogen), and flexible loads (e.g., electric vehicles, electrolyzers, flexible building loads). The input data required by RODeO can be classified into three bins: 1) utility service data, which refers to retail utility rate information (meter cost, energy and demand charges), 2) electricity market data, which include energy and reserve prices, 3) other inputs, which refer to additional electrical demand, product output demand, technological assumptions, financial properties, and operational parameters.

Relationships among diurnal variations of polar night cloud, precipitation, surface temperatures, and the fair-weather return current of the global electric circuit (GEC)

Over the past five years (June 2017-current), the vertical electric field (E z ) as well as numerous cloud, precipitation and radiation properties have been monitored at the Department of Energy-Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (DOE ARM) North Slope of Alaska (NSA) field site. Comparisons between the composite diurnal averaged fair-weather E z , and composite ceilometer derived cloud base height during the polar night, reveal a significant correlation between the parameters (r = 0.62), supporting previous studies that there is high correlation between local electric field and cloud properties. With the use of extensive instrumentation at the site, such as the Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL), Ka-band Zenith Radar (KAZR), ceilometer, SKYRAD, Precipitation Imaging Package (PIP), among others, this study provides a more comprehensive examination of the diurnal cycle of cloud and precipitation properties along with the localized fair-weather return current of the larger Global Electric Circuit (GEC) system. Comparisons between the composite diurnal averaged fair-weather E z , and cloud thickness, maximum column backscatter, and precipitation particle counts all show similar diurnal variability during the polar night, indicating that during the largest magnitude fair weather E z time periods, clouds bases tend to be higher, clouds are thicker, have a larger column backscatter, and display more precipitating particles. Furthermore, a slight diurnal variability in the polar night surface temperature was found to be highly correlated (r = 0.87) to the longwave downwelling irradiance measured by SKYRAD, indicating that the variations in the physical properties of local clouds could modulate the diurnal polar night surface temperature variability on the order of 0.5 °C/day. In conclusion, these findings emphasize the importance and global nature of the GEC system, with the global aggregate of thunderstorms and electrified clouds potentially influencing polar night cloud properties as well as diurnal wintertime polar surface temperature variation.

Spin-phonon resonances in nearly polar metals with spin-orbit coupling

In metals in the vicinity of a polar transition, interactions between electrons and soft phonon modes remain to be determined. Here we explore the consequences of spin-orbit assisted electron-phonon coupling on the collective modes of such nearly polar metals in the presence of magnetic field. We find that the soft polar phonon hybridizes with spin-flip electronic excitations of the Zeeman-split bands leading to an anticrossing. The associated energy splitting allows for an unambiguous determination of the strength of the spin-orbit mediated coupling to soft modes in polar metals by spectroscopic experiments. Here, the approach to the polar transition is reflected by the softening of the effective g factor of the hybridized spin-flip mode. Analyzing the static limit, we find that the polar order parameter can be oriented by magnetic field. This provides possibilities for alternative switching protocols in polar metallic materials. We demonstrate that the effects we predict can be observed with current experimental techniques and discuss promising material candidates.

Absolute magneto-optical measurement of magnetic field on a long pulse high electrical current driven solenoid

We describe a direct absolute magneto-optical approach to measuring the magnetic field driven by long pulse width (>5 ms) and high electrical current (∼kA) in a solenoidal coil. The magnetic field and electrical current are among the most important operating parameters in lightning research and electrical power distribution and are essential to understanding the properties of the radiation output in pulsed energy accelerators as well as other research platforms. However, accurately measuring these magnetic fields and electrical currents using conventional electrical diagnostics is difficult due to the strength of ionizing radiation and electromagnetic interference. Our approach uses a fiber coupled laser beam with a rare earth element material sensing crystal that is highly resistant to electromagnetic interference, allows for absolute measurement, and does not require an external calibration. Here, we focus on device theory, operating parameters, magneto-optical results from an experiment on a high current solenoid, and comparison with a calculation of the magnetic field and reference electrical current flowing downstream of the solenoid.

Permeability and Induced Polarization of Mudstones

Electrical measurements can be used to estimate hydraulic properties such as permeability ( k ) in sedimentary rocks. Previous work has focused on sandstones, siltstones, and carbonates, while investigations on mudstones have rarely been reported. In this study, we report on electrical geophysical measurements for 23 mudstone samples using an experimental approach designed to reliably saturate these low permeability mudstones. The modified Hagen-Poiseuille model linking permeability to the formation factor ( F ) and an effective pore radius ( r ) provides an excellent fit to the data set with a near-constant pore radius, indicating that the effective porosity (1/ F ) is the controlling factor on k . In these samples, the surface area normalized to pore volume ( S por ), frequently used in permeability estimation models, varies by 1–2 orders of magnitude and is thus not a reliable proxy of the inverse effective hydraulic radius. The formation factor also exerts the primary control on induced polarization (IP) parameters, whereas Spor shows no relation to the IP parameters. A strong linear relationship is found between IP parameters (imaginary conductivity and normalized chargeability) and surface conductivity, although the proportionality factor is significantly lower than those observed in more permeable rocks and sediments. Apparent relationships between the polarization strength-derived and time constant-derived geophysical length scales and the effective hydraulic radius appear to be driven by variations in the electrochemical parameters (i.e., specific polarizability and diffusion coefficient). Overall, these findings emphasize that predicting hydraulic properties from electrical measurements in fine-grained rocks remains challenging and requires further investigation into the electrochemical properties involved.

Modeling of tungsten filament in gas discharge in H - ion source

Sources of negative ions such as H - are essential elements of proton accelerators and tokamaks. They have limited lifetime. The replacement of an ion source is a costly process causing delays in the operation of the entire machine. The hot tungsten filament is the key element that limits the lifetime of the H - ion source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) facility. An accurate model, which describes the filament physics and provides a reliable estimate on its lifetime, may significantly improve the operation of the facility. In this report we describe such a model, including a comprehensive list of relevant physical processes from first principles. The model can be used to describe different regimes of operation using diagnostics data as input parameters. It has been benchmarked against the data collected during the production cycle at LANSCE and shows good agreement with experimental data.
