X-rays and rotation among post-T Tauri G stars in Orion Ic

Walter and Kuhi (1981) have shown that at least 10 out of 12 T Tauri stars brighter than m(v) = 12.5 are X-ray emitters. The X-ray luminosities of these stars, L(x), are often close to the detection threshold value. One of the principal results of the present investigation is the evidence for at least a weak correlation between L(x) and V(R) sin i. If it is assumed that results obtained concerning stars in the Orion Ic Association are representative of other stellar fields, it appears that along with the RS CVn stars, pre-main-sequence G stars are among the most X-ray luminous late-type stars on the H-R diagram. A second conclusion is that the X-rays are almost certainly produced by flares and/or thin coronae close to the stellar surface.

A comparison of radiation damage in liner ICs from cobalt-60 gamma rays and 2.2-MeV electrons

The total ionizing dose response of fourteen IC types from eight manufacturers was measured using Co-60 gamma rays and 2.2-MeV electrons for exposure levels of 100 to 20,000 Gy(Si). Key parameter measurements were made and compared for each device type. The data show that a Co-60 source is not a suitable simulation source for some systems because of the generally more damaging nature of electrons as well as the unpredictable nature of the individual device response to the two types of radiations used here.

High-resolution infrared observations in IC 5146

High-resolution near-infrared and far-infrared observations are presented of the southeastern molecular cloud fragment in the IC 5146 dark cloud. These observations rule out earlier suggestions for the formation of massive stars in this fragment.

The remarkable infrared galaxy Arp 220 = IC 4553

IRAS observations of the peculiar galaxy Arp 220 = IC 4553 show that it is extremely luminous in the far-infrared, with a total luminosity of 2 x 10 to the 12th solar luminosities. The infrared-to-blue luminosity ratio of this galaxy is about 80, which is the largest value of the ratio for galaxies in the UGC catalog, and places it in the range of the 'unidentified' infrared sources recently reported by Houck et al. in the IRAS all-sky survey. Other observations of Arp 220, combined with the luminosity in the infrared, allow either a Seyfert-like or starburst origin for this luminosity.

The dust content of the planetary nebula IC 3568

Far-infrared photometry of IC 3568 shows a substantial excess that is not suggested by 10 micron data. A recently constructed model for the nebula permits the temperature profile for dust to be computed. The calculated infrared spectrum reproduces the observations well and requires that the grains have absorption properties like those of amorphous carbon. The dust coexists in the ionized gas but is heated directly by stellar radiation; most of the Ly-alpha radiation escapes from the nebula.

Multifunction Vacuum Chamber for IC Metallization

Vacuum system chamber processing multilayer metallization on integrated circuits (IC's) performs four operations ordinarily done in separated equipment. Chamber etches holes, removes photoresist, cleans by sputter etching, and deposits final layer of metal. Combinedfunction chamber costs less than separate equipment. Chamber avoids exposing integrated circuits to room air and, to oxidation and dust, between steps. Eliminates time spent in transferring circuits from one apparatus to next.

Near-infrared mapping of ARP 299 (IC 694-NGC 3690) - Colliding galaxies unveiled

Near-infrared maps and multicolor photometry of the interacting galaxies IC 694 and NGC 3690 which form Arp 299 (= Markarian 171) are presented. These data reveal for the first time the distribution of nuclei and old red stars in a cataclysmically interacting system. The nuclei are considerably offset from the visual centroids of the galaxies but not from the mass centroids. The near-infrared colors of the most active regions are strongly affected by extinction, emission form hot dust, and bremsstrahlung. Near-infrared emission is also identified with secondary regions of star formation, probably resulting from the galaxies' interaction.

Static and dynamic properties of incommensurate smectic-A(IC) liquid crystals

The elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the incommensurate smectic A(IC) phase liquid crystals are studied. The phase is characterized by two colinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The elastic free energy is formulated in terms of a displacement field and a phason field. It is found that the topological defects of the system are dislocations with a nonzero phason field and phason field components. A two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations is introduced. It is shown that the hydrodynamic modes of the phase include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics.

Differential imaging of forbidden Fe X in IC 443

This paper presents images of two areas of the supernova remnant IC 443 showing emission from the forbidden 6374 A red coronal line taken with an emission-line differential imaging camera. The areas are in the vicinity of strong soft X-ray emission as observed with the Einstein Observatory. The forbidden Fe X emission is patchy on the scale of seconds of arc. For the brightest emission regions, an electron density of approximately 60/cu cm and gas pressures of 0.l7 x 10 to the 8th/cu cm K are found. These estimates are speculative because of the large correction for interstellar dust, and the assumption of sheetlike structure. Although this region has the highest average surface brightness, no direct correlation is found between the X-ray and forbidden Fe X knots. The implied physical conditions in the region suggest that the forbidden Fe X knots are being evaporated.

Shock chemistry in the molecular clouds associated with SNR IC 443

Observations of several interstellar molecules toward the highly perturbed B and G clouds associated with SNR IC 443 are reported. The results suggest that hot and dense material is present in the SNR, and that shocks are present in both regions. The HCO(+) abundance is shown to be a few times greater that found in cold quiescent gas, in contradiction with previous results. The SO, CS, CN, and NH3 abundances are similar to those found in cold dark clouds.

Pre-main-sequence stars in the young cluster IC 2391

Seven or eight new, late-type members of the poor open cluster IC 2391 are identified, and membership is confirmed for two other stars. The new members fall approximately along a 3 x 10 to the 7th yr isochrone, which is the age estimated for the cluster on the basis of it super main-seqence turnoff. Echelle spectra were obtained for the most probable cluster members. Most show H-alpha in emission and a strong Li 6707 A absorption line, and a few are rapid rotators. The Li abundances for cluster stars cooler than the sun are considerably less than the primordial Li abundance, providing the first direct evidence for substantial premain-sequence Li burning. The rotational velocities show a range from about 15 to 150 km/s, with a distribution of rotational velocities not significantly different from that observed for low-mass stars in the Pleiades.

Submillimeter continuum emission from galaxies - Star formation and the interstellar medium in the local group dwarf IC 10

Far-infrared (95 and 160 micron) maps and visual broad-band and line images of the nearby, luminous irregular galaxy IC 10 are discussed. Observations of the dust emission make it possible to constrain the total mass of gas and the rate of star formation derived for the galaxy. The total star-formation rate is estimated to be about 0.15 solar mass/yr, and the e-folding time for exhaustion of the interstellar gas due to the star formation is only a few billion years. To determine the source of the cool dust in emission at approximately 100-250 microns from many galaxies, 60, 100, and 160 micron photometry, obtained previously, is compared; and CO, H I, and dust emission is correlated. Based on the correlation between the various cool components of the interstellar medium, it is concluded that the likely location of the dust that dominates the emission at about 160, and possibly 100, microns is within both the diffuse atomic gas and in surface layers of molecular clouds.

Far-infrared spectroscopy of NGC 6946, IC 342, and Arp 299

Researchers investigated the physical conditions in the infrared bright galaxies NGC 6946, IC 342, and Arp 299 through measurements of far-infrared emission lines from Si II, O I, C II, and O III using the facility Cooled Grating Spectrometer on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. These data are interpreted using our theoretical models for photodissociation regions and H II regions. For the central 45 inches of these galaxies, researchers determined that the dominant excitation mechanism for the far infrared radiation (FIR) lines is far ultraviolet radiation (FUR) radiation from young stars, and the authors derived the total mass, density, and temperature of the warm atomic gas and the typical sizes, number densities, and filling factors for the interstellar clouds.

HII regions in IC 1613: The ISM in a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy

IC 1613, a nearby (725 kpc distant) dwarf irregular galaxy, has always been known to contain large, ring-shaped HII regions in its northeast corner. A new H alpha image has been obtained using the Bell Labs Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera, an RCA 320 X 512 pixel-thinned, back-illuminated CCD, an H alpha filter of central wavelength 6562 A and width (full width half maximum) of 30 A, and the 42 inch telescope at Lowell Observatory. The low resolution images exhibit many new, faint features.
