Laboratory Testing and Performance Characterization of the High Efficiency Dehumidification System (HEDS) Technology

The high efficiency dehumidification system (HEDS) is a unique air handling unit (AHU) design with two water coils. Connected in series, these water coils can sensibly reheat the airstream after it is cooled and dehumidified, thereby mitigating (or sometimes eliminating) the need for conventional sensible reheat with additional energy from hot water, electric resistance or steam coils. Another unique design feature is the size of the HEDS primary cooling coil. While typical AHU cooling coils have a 6-row geometry, the HED's cooling coil has a deeper 10-row geometry enabling discharge air dew point temperatures at or below 55 degrees F despite warmer chilled water supply temperatures approaching (sometimes exceeding) 50 degrees F. The ability to meet acceptable discharge air dew points with warmer chilled water supply temperatures improves both operational efficiency and system resilience against chilled water plant operational or control issues. This report summarizes the 59 steady-state test results that form a comprehensive performance map of the HEDS technology including its reheat capability. The breadth of outdoor air conditions and flow rates over which the HEDS technology was tested and characterized encompasses the unit 1) operating as a dedicated outdoor air system or mixed air system and 2) controlled with constant air volume or variable air volume fan control.

Toward Lithium Recovery Using Modular (and Membraneless) Phase Separation and Extraction (MPSE) Technology with Ionic Liquid (IL) Solvents: Effect of Coatings

In this work, a single-channel slope-plate Modular and Membrane-less Phase Separation and Extraction (MPSE) device was fabricated using 3D printing. The slope-plate was designed with an insertable glass slide to enable surface modification with coatings. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and perfluoropolyether (Zdol) coatings were applied to tailor surface wettability and enhance phase separation. Using a model biphasic system of water and hexadecane, both coatings significantly improved the separation efficiency compared to the uncoated device by promoting selective wetting. Building on these results, lithium extraction from a simulated saline solution was investigated using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][NTf₂]) as the ionic liquid (IL) extractant. The IL effectively extracted Li⁺ from the aqueous phase in bulk extraction, demonstrating its potential for lithium recovery. However, the low interfacial tension between the IL and aqueous phases posed challenges for phase separation. The application of SAM and Zdol coatings effectively mitigated this issue. Overall, integrating tailored surface chemistry with the slope-plate MPSE design shows great promise as an efficient and scalable platform for studying liquid–liquid separation and optimizing ionic liquid–based extraction processes for lithium recovery from saline sources.

Single Metal Atom Catalysts Prepared by Diluted Atomic Layer Deposition

The scalable and facile preparation of single-atom catalysts remains a critical challenge. Here, in this study, we introduce diluted atomic layer deposition (DALD), a unique approach for synthesizing supported metal catalysts with precisely tunable loadings. Unlike conventional metal deposition by ALD which uses pure metal precursors, DALD employs a diluted precursor mixture, combining organometallic precursors with the corresponding free ligand in controlled ratios. The method enables precise control over metal loadings, allowing the synthesis of structures ranging from nanoparticles to isolated single atoms, as exemplified by Ir, Rh, and Pt on high-surface-area γ-Al 2 O 3 . With its inherent simplicity and exceptional efficiency in metal precursor utilization, DALD represents a highly scalable strategy, unlocking opportunities for integrating single-atom catalysts into industrial processes.

Power Converter Circuit Design Automation using Parallel Monte Carlo Tree Search

The tidal waves of modern electronic/electrical devices have led to increasing demands for ubiquitous application-specific power converters. A conventional manual design procedure of such power converters is computation- and labor-intensive, which involves selecting and connecting component devices, tuning component-wise parameters and control schemes, and iteratively evaluating and optimizing the design. To automate and speed up this design process, we propose an automatic framework that designs custom power converters from design specifications using Monte Carlo Tree Search. Specifically, the framework embraces the upper-confidence-bound-tree (UCT), a variant of Monte Carlo Tree Search, to automate topology space exploration with circuit design specification-encoded reward signals. Moreover, our UCT-based approach can exploit small offline data via the specially designed default policy and can run in parallel to accelerate topology space exploration. Further, it utilizes a hybrid circuit evaluation strategy to substantially reduce design evaluation costs. Empirically, we demonstrated that our framework could generate energy-efficient circuit topologies for various target voltage conversion ratios. Compared to existing automatic topology optimization strategies, the proposed method is much more computationally efficient --- the sequential version can generate topologies with the same quality while being up to 67% faster. Here, the parallelization schemes can further achieve high speedups compared to the sequential version.

Future energy infrastructure, energy platform and energy storage

Today fossil energy dominates energy consumption across the world. There has been an increasing momentum to reduce fossil energy consumption and increase renewable energy utilization to more than 70%. Such high penetrations of distributed renewable resources bring large uncertainty and complexity that cannot be easily handled by the current infrastructure. For the last two decades, telecommunication industry has gone through a similar transition from centralized to distributed systems, and more recently to platform approaches, which become the corner stone of today’s vibrant platform economy. Based on telecommunication history, we believe that a platform-based approach, called the energy platform, is a viable solution for addressing the renewable energy challenges. The energy platform consists of an array of computational algorithms, sensing and control technologies for key industry, energy generators and users to jointly manage and control the complex energy infrastructure. It includes the following key components: (1) the hardware and software to generate, store, control and transmit electricity/data (the energy cloud), (2) the digital platforms and tools for key energy producers, digital, service and communication industry to share the assets, participate in and manage the complex infrastructure, and for customers to participate in energy transactions, (3) the transaction platform for new service and business models. Additionally, the energy platform requires breakthroughs in large scale energy storage and many other areas including efficient power electronics, sensors and controls, new mathematical and computational tools, and deep integration of energy technologies and information sciences to control and stabilize such complex chaotic systems.

High-throughput design of high-performance lightweight high-entropy alloys

Developing affordable and light high-temperature materials alternative to Ni-base superalloys has significantly increased the efforts in designing advanced ferritic superalloys. However, currently developed ferritic superalloys still exhibit low high-temperature strengths, which limits their usage. Here we use a CALPHAD-based high-throughput computational method to design light, strong, and low-cost high-entropy alloys for elevated-temperature applications. Through the high-throughput screening, precipitation-strengthened lightweight high-entropy alloys are discovered from thousands of initial compositions, which exhibit enhanced strengths compared to other counterparts at room and elevated temperatures. The experimental and theoretical understanding of both successful and failed cases in their strengthening mechanisms and order-disorder transitions further improves the accuracy of the thermodynamic database of the discovered alloy system. This study shows that integrating high-throughput screening, multiscale modeling, and experimental validation proves to be efficient and useful in accelerating the discovery of advanced precipitation-strengthened structural materials tuned by the high-entropy alloy concept.

Experimental study of R452B and R454B as drop-in replacement for R410A in split heat pumps having tube-fin and microchannel heat exchangers

The objective of this study is to experimentally evaluate two residential split heat pumps using low-GWP refrigerants, i.e., R452B and R454B, and compare the results against R410A. In this work, each heat pump used the same model of two-speed scroll compressor, the same indoor blower and outdoor fan. However, they were distinguished by the indoor and outdoor heat exchanger types: tube-fin heat exchangers (TFHXs) in one case, and microchannel heat exchangers (MCHXs) in the other. The two heat pumps were extensively evaluated following the test conditions for two-speed SEER (cooling seasonal energy efficiency rating)/HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor) ratings. In general, these results show that R452B and R454B are good replacement candidates for R410A for heat pump using tube-fin heat exchangers and microchannel heat exchangers. R452B and R454B led to lower capacities. In the TFHX heat pump, on average, compared to the performance of R410A, the cooling capacity of R452B is 96%; the heating capacity of R452B is 91%; the cooling capacity of R454B is 95%, the heat capacity of R454B is 89%. In the MCHX heat pump, the cooling capacity of R452B is 97%; the heating capacity of R452B is 97%; the cooling capacity of R454B is 98%, the heat capacity of R454B is 97%. With respect to cooling and heating seasonal performances, in the TFHX heat pump, the SEERs of R452B and R454B are 1.5% lower than R410A. HSPFs of the three refrigerants are identical. In the MCHX heat pump, R454B has 7% higher SEER, and R452B has 2% higher SEER than R410A; in heating mode, R454B has the same HSPF as R410A, while R452B is 4% more efficient. The compressor lubricant overheating issue of R452B and R454B, at low ambient heating condition, high stage, should be noticed.

Cold Climate Heat Pump Evaluation

The use of heat pumps in cold and very cold climates increased by 63% between 2009 and 2015 [1, 2]. This can be attributed to development of heat pumps with higher heating capacity at lower temperatures and increased efficiency. A primary technology driving this trend is the use of variable-speed compressors, which come with an increase in the level of controls in the equipment. Most units with variable-speed compressors also include electronic expansion valves and variable-speed indoor (ID) and outdoor (OD) fans. With the increased complexity of these systems, developing a test procedure that is representative of typical performance and not too burdensome on manufacturers presents a difficult challenge.

Multilevel peel-off patterning of a prototype semitransparent organic photovoltaic module

Semitransparent organic photovoltaics (ST-OPVs) with applications to power generating windows have shown substantial increases in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and average photopic transmission (APT) at the laboratory scale. Here, the demonstration of similarly efficient, large-scale ST-OPV modules with geometric fill factors (GFF) approaching 100%, however, remains a challenge. Here, we employ a multilevel peel-off patterning method that can achieve micron-scale resolution without exposing chemically sensitive organic materials to solvents. Eight, 4 cm × 0.4 cm cells are connected in series to realize a prototype ST-OPV module with GFF = 95.8%, with PCE = 7.3 ± 0.2% under simulated AM 1.5G illumination at 1 sun intensity, APT = 41.8 ± 1.4%, and a light utilization efficiency of LUE = 3.1 ± 0.1%. A neutral color STOPV module is also demonstrated with 1.7 ± 0.1% and International Commission on Illumination (CIE) LAB coordinates of (L*, a*, b*) = (53.7, -1.9, -3.9).

Visually resolving the direct Z-scheme heterojunction in CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes for photocatalytic evolution of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water

We report the direct Z-scheme heterojunction has been recently emerging as an appealing architecture for photocatalysts design. Its efficiency depends on the interfacial and structural features of the photocatalysts. Herein, the two-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets are grown on the surface of CdS hollow cubes to construct the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hierarchical hollow photocatalysts with chemically bonded interface. The visualized measurements based on spatial-resolved surface photovoltage spectroscopy, combined with other spectroscopic and simulation investigations, clearly disclose that the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 hollow cubes constitute a highly efficient direct Z-scheme system. This accounts for the stoichiometric generation of H 2 and H 2 O 2 from pure water observed for the CdS@ZnIn 2 S 4 sulfide-only photocatalysts under visible light irradiation with an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.63 % at 400 nm. The present work demonstrates an effective protocol to achieve comprehensive insights into the charge transfer route at semiconductor heterojunction, and offers a viable way for constructing efficient sulfide-only photocatalysts for driving water splitting reaction.

Tailoring the structural durability and proton conductivity of electrolytes for highly fuel-flexible and reversible ceramic cells

A durable and high ionic conducting electrolyte is critical for achieving fuel-flexible and reversible protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) at reduced temperatures since the developed electrolyte materials are vulnerable to steam, CO 2 , or coking deterioration. Here, we report a fast-conducting electrolyte material BaZr 0.06 Ce 0.7 Y 0.06 Yb 0.06 Hf 0.06 Gd 0.06 O 3−δ (BZCYYbHG), demonstrating excellent durability against CO 2 and H 2 O under the realistic electrolysis operations, and a high conductivity of 0.017 S cm −1 at 550 °C for lowering the PCC operating temperature. Further, density functional theory calculations indicate that the higher configurational entropy of mixing at the B-site cations slightly reduces the hydrogen adsorption energy, suggesting a higher incorporation rate of protons or hydrogen atoms into the electrolyte bulk. Ultimately, single cells with the BZCYYbHG electrolyte deliver peak power densities of 1.39, 1.12, and 0.7 W cm −2 in H 2 , NH 3 , and wet CH 4 at 550 °C with promising durability. In addition, the PCCs achieve a current density of −1.61 A cm −2 at 1.3 V and 550 °C with a high faradaic efficiency of 91.3% at −0.5 A cm −2 , enabling stable operations in steam electrolysis mode under humid air (30% H 2 O), wet air containing CO 2 (up to 10%), and reversible cycling.

Stable and high voltage and power output of CEA-MFCs internally connected in series (iCiS-MFC)

The voltage output of a single MFC is normally less than 0.8 V, often less than 0.3 V at maximum power output, which greatly limits the application of MFCs. When MFCs are scaled up, however, increasing reactor size has typically resulted in decreased power density. In this study, we developed a novel MFC configuration that contains multiple cloth electrode assemblies in which the MFCs were internally connected in series (iCiS-MFC). The iCiS-MFC, equivalent to 3 CEA-MFCs, produced a high voltage output over 1.8 V and a maximum power density of 3.5 W m -2 using carbon cloth cathodes containing activated carbon as the catalyst. This power density is 6% higher than that reported for a similar smaller CEA-MFC, indicating that power can be maintained during scale-up with a greater than 33-fold increase in total cathode surface area and greater than 20-fold increase in reactor volume. High stability was also demonstrated based on the performance of the iCiS-MFC over a period of one year of operation. The high power and stability is likely due, in part, to a more efficient means of current collection through the internal series connection, which also avoids the use of expensive current collectors. These results clearly demonstrate the great potential of this MFC design for further scaling-up.

A 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone for high-efficiency organic solar cells

One-dimensional ladder-type nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) with large fused ring cores have been typically used in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Prior studies have demonstrated that small molecule acceptors with three-dimensional (3D) structures may exhibit low energy loss, and hence can lead to improved OSC performance. In this study, a new 3D NFA ( 99CZ-8F ) with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone was designed, synthesized, and characterized, where two linear A-D-A architectures were linked by a single N–N bond. 99CZ-8F showed strong absorption in the range of 500–800 nm in the solid state, which is complementary to the absorption of the donor material PM6 . After regulating the morphology of the active layer via binary solvent mixture, the optimized device exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.6 ± 0.1%, which is among the best reported values for 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor based OSCs

Separation Process of Plant Fibers for Textile and Composite Application: A Review of Recent Advances

Plant fiber resources have gained significant attention for value-added utilization due to their renewability, sustainability, abundance, and widely acknowledged physical properties. The efficient and pragmatic separation of plant fibers is a critical process for their efficient utilization, yet a substantial gap persists between laboratory research advancements and their commercialization. To increase the possibility of research advancements for industrial application, this review summarizes the recent advances in different extraction methodologies of plant fiber research in textile and composite fields. It systematically outlines, compares, and contrasts physical (cryogenic, supercritical carbon dioxide, ultrasonic, steam explosion and microwave heating treatment), chemical (alkali, oxidation, organic solvents and deep eutectic solvents methods), and biological (natural retting, enzymatic and microorganism approaches) methods, addressing their respective mechanisms, strengths, limitations, research progress, and future prospects. In general, traditional chemical approaches have proven significantly effective but are accompanied by high pollution. Conversely, novel chemical treatments such as deep eutectic solvents and organic solvents offer a promising blend of efficiency and environmental friendliness but require deeper studies currently. Meanwhile, physical and biological treatments, though largely eco-friendly, tend to suffer from lower separation efficiencies. The research needs and future direction are also addressed to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and their widespread industrial application.

Performance Evaluation of Various Configurations for Domestic Refrigerators with R600a

The increasing global focus on mitigating global warming has driven a change in refrigerant selection for domestic refrigerators. While most existing refrigerators use R-134a as their working fluid, there is a gradual shift towards R600a in newly manufactured products to minimize environmental impact. In order to design a more energy-efficient isobutane refrigerator, various configurations, including both single-evaporator and dual-evaporator cycles, were investigated. The study was conducted using a high-fidelity simulation platform, the Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM), developed and experimentally validated by the US DOE/ORNL. This platform includes detailed segment-to-segment heat exchanger model, fan model, and compressor model, utilizing refrigerant properties from REFPROP 10. A quasi-steady-state approach was employed to simulate the transient behavior and performance of a domestic refrigerator. The performance of various configurations was compared, and the effects of the refrigerant properties and operating conditions were also analyzed and discussed.
