Initial postbuckling behavior of double curvature shell segments under several loading conditions determined, using Koiter theory
A vacuum vessel in between the hot plasma and the magnetic coils is crucial for a fusion reactor. In this study, a tool is presented to perform the initial design of such a vessel automatically. Starting from the last closed flux surface, an algorithm is developed which lofts this manifold out as much as possible. At the same time, the algorithm makes sure that no intersection with the coils takes place. In the presented work, this algorithm is applied to the HSX stellarator and it has been verified that the resulting vessel wall can be built from an engineering perspective. Using field line tracing, the strikepoints on the vessel wall indicate the initial locations for a divertor.

The non-perturbative MHD-kinetic hybrid code MARS-K (Liu et al 2014 Phys. Plasmas 21 056105) is updated to include relativistic effects for kinetic fast particles, enabling the code to model excitation of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) by runaway electrons (REs) in post-disruption tokamak plasmas. Applying the updated code to RE beams in both DIII-D and ITER, a zoo of AE modes triggered by trapped REs due to precessional drift-kinetic resonances is computed while scanning the RE energy. At fixed RE energy, multiple unstable roots are also excited. These AE modes possess radially different eigenmode structures, ranging from global modes to core-localized ones. The computed mode frequency is in the Alfvén frequency range, increasing with the assumed RE energy in a staircase fashion and quantitatively matching the experimental measurement (in DIII-D). At the (more relevant) high-frequency range (above 1 MHz), the modeled eigenmodes are identified as compressional AEs (CAEs) in DIII-D and a mixture of CAE and shear Alfvén waves in ITER.

In magnetically confined fusion plasmas, the breaking of ‘magnetic flux-surfaces’ due to resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) can generate magnetic islands and alter field topology to significantly impact plasma confinement and transport. Here, this work investigates the effect of magnetic islands on neoclassical radial energy transport within the core plasma of an analytic circular tokamak using the XGC-S global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code. Findings from our simulations revealed substantial enhancements in electron neoclassical radial energy diffusivity in and around the islands, in addition to a newly observed two-peak structure at the O/X-points and outer island boundary in the electron diffusivity profile.

Computer program designs transformers which have one primary /center tap permissible/ and up to 20 untapped secondaries, and which can handle up to 500 V across any one winding. Computer determines total secondary power, core type, primary turns, secondary turns, and wire sizes for primary and secondary windings.
Program relieves designer of most of the computational details, while he maintains control over most engineering decisions. Number of specifications that must be supplied by user allows for considerable flexibility and for exercise of engineering judgment. Speed of program makes it possible to run many cases, economically determining effect of various parameter changes.
Handbook has been published to facilitate conversion to metric system. Conversion data makes it possible for transformer designers to obtain fast and close approximation of significant parameters. For greater convenience, derivations of some transformer and inductor parameters are also presented.
The adoption by NASA of the metric system for dimensioning to replace the long-used English units imposes a requirement on the U.S. transformer designer to convert from the familiar units to the less familiar metric equivalents. Material is presented to assist in that transition in the field of transformer design and fabrication. The conversion data makes it possible for the designer to obtain a fast and close approximation of significant parameters such as size, weight, and temperature rise. Nomographs are included to provide a close approximation for breadboarding purposes. For greater convenience, derivations of some of the parameters are also presented.
