Spin-strain interactions under hydrostatic pressure in α-RuCl 3

We investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on 𝛼−RuCl 3 , a prototypical material for the Kitaev spin model on a honeycomb lattice with a possible spin-liquid ground state. Using ultrasound measurements at pressures up to 1.16 GPa, we reveal significant modifications of the acoustic properties and the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of this material. Hydrostatic pressure suppresses the three-dimensional magnetic order and induces a dimerization transition at higher pressures. At low pressures, the sound attenuation exhibits a linear temperature dependence, while above 0.28 GPa, it becomes nearly temperature independent, suggesting a shift in the phonon scattering regime dominated by Majorana fermions. These findings provide new insights into spin-strain interactions in Kitaev magnets and deliver a detailed characterization of the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of 𝛼−RuCl 3 under hydrostatic pressure.

Bipolar Blobs as Evidence of Hidden AGN Activities in the Low-mass Galaxies

Abstract We report evidence of a hidden black hole (BH) in a low-mass galaxy, MaNGA 9885-9102, and provide a new method to identify active BHs in low-mass galaxies. This galaxy is originally selected from the MaNGA survey with distinctive bipolar Hαblobs at the minor axis. The bipolar feature can be associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, while the two blobs are classified as the Hiiregions on the BPT diagram, making the origins confusing. The Swift UV continuum shows that the two blobs do not have UV counterparts, suggesting that the source of ionization is out of the blobs. Consistent with this, the detailed photoionization models prefer AGN rather than the star-forming origin with a significance of 5.8σ. The estimated BH mass isM BH ∼ 7.2 × 10 5 M ⊙ from theM BH –σ * relationship. This work introduces a novel method for detecting the light echo of BHs, potentially extending to intermediate mass, in low-metallicity environments where the traditional BPT diagram fails.

The Intrinsic Sizes of Odd Radio Circles

Abstract A new class of sources, the so-called odd radio circles (ORCs), have been discovered by recent sensitive, large-area radio continuum surveys. The distances of these sources have so far relied on photometric redshifts of optical galaxies found at the centers of or near ORCs. Here we present Gemini rest-frame optical spectroscopy of six galaxies at the centers of, or potentially associated with, the first five ORC discoveries. We supplement this with Legacy Survey imaging and Prospector fits to theirgriz+W1/W2 photometry. Of the three ORCs with central galaxies, all lie at distances (z= 0.27–0.55) that confirm the large intrinsic diameters of the radio circles (300–500 kpc). The central galaxies are massive (M * ∼ 10 11 M ☉ ), red, unobscured ellipticals with old (≳1 Gyr) stellar populations. They have LINER spectral types that are shock-powered or active galactic nucleus (AGN)-powered. All three host low-luminosity, radio-quiet AGN. The similarity of their central galaxies is consistent with a common origin, perhaps as a blast wave from an ancient starburst. The other two ORCs are adjacent and have no prominent central galaxies. However, thez= 0.25 disk galaxy that lies between them hosts a Type 2, moderate-luminosity AGN. They may instead be the lobes of a radio jet from this AGN.

Deploying advanced building control strategies in small- and medium-sized commercial buildings (SMBs) is critical but constrained by two major challenges: (1) the lack of sensor and control infrastructure (SCI) and (2) the significant engineering effort required for implementation and configuration. While these barriers limit large-scale adoption in SMBs, they remain underexplored in the literature, which has largely emphasized feasibility over scalability.
