Novel Method for Domestic Stable Isotope Production (CRADA #667) Final Report

This report presents the progress achieved on our chlorine isotope separation efforts in the CRADA #667 agreement. We used a microchannel distillation (MCD) packing structure to enrich HCl isotopes (H35Cl, H37Cl) and an isotachophoresis (ITP) separation to enrich ionic chloride species (35Cl- and 37Cl-). A 2 m tall MCD column was constructed and achieved 264 separation stages over several days, which is well above the goal of 50 stages outlined in the CRADA. The resulting height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) was 0.76 cm. ITP tests were run ~ 24 hours and achieved a single-stage separation factor of 1.559.

Order–Disorder Phase Stabilization by Pressure‐Induced Charge Transfer Enhances the Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Effect in Multiferroic BaFe 4 O 7

Abstract Multiferroic ferroelectric photovoltaic (FPV) materials, combining magnetic and ferroelectric properties, are of paramount importance for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. However, optimizing both the remanent polarization and the optical bandgap—key factors for enhanced FPV performance—presents a significant challenge due to their trade‐off. This work shows that pressure‐induced charge transfer between different metal sites can break this trade‐off. Above ≈20 GPa, charge transfer between different trivalent iron (Fe) sites in the multiferroic material BaFe 4 O 7 leads to Fe valence disproportionation, FeO 4 tetrahedra disorder, and Jahn–Teller distortion of FeO 6 octahedra. These changes reduce the bandgap, lower resistivity, and enhance ferroelectric polarization, resulting in a 2.5‐fold increase in photocurrent. Upon decompression, BaFe 4 O 7 retains an order–disorder structure, optimal ferroelectric and optical properties at ambient conditions. This work provides a novel pathway to simultaneously optimizing ferroelectricity and bandgap via pressure‐induced charge transfer, overcoming the traditional trade‐off in FPV materials, and offers a promising approach for developing high polarization performance, narrow‐bandgap FPV materials.

High-voltage water-scarce hydrogel electrolytes enable mechanically safe stretchable Li-ion batteries

Soft Li-ion batteries, based on conventional organic electrolytes, face performance degradation challenges due to moisture penetration and safety concerns due to possible leakage of toxic fluorine compounds and flammable solvents under mechanical damage. We design a water-scarce hydrogel electrolyte with fluorine-free lithium salt to achieve wide electrochemical stability window (up to 3.11 volts) in ambient air without hermetic packaging while balancing high stretchability (1348%), ion conductivity (41 millisiemens per centimeter), and self-healing capabilities for mechanically and chemically safe stretchable Li-ion batteries. Molecular synergy between hydrophilicity and lithiophilicity of zwitterionic polymer backbone is revealed by molecular dynamics simulations. The battery exhibits capacity retention under harsh mechanical stresses—enduring stretching, twisting, folding, and multiple through-punctures by a needle—while self-healing from repeated through cuts by a razor blade. Stable ambient operation for 1 month over 500 charge-discharge cycles (average coulomb efficiency, 95%) is achieved. A prototype self-healing electronic system with embedded soft batteries demonstrates practical application as a durable embodied energy source.

A Unified Beam-Dynamics and Hardware Design Framework for Hybrid Nonlinear-Kicker Injection in NSLS-II

Nonlinear kickers (NLKs) enable off-axis injection in ultralow-emittance storage rings by providing a strong kick to the injected beam while remaining nearly transparent to the stored beam. In hybrid schemes, a conventional four-kicker bump defines the injected trajectory, and the NLK reduces the first-turn action under constrained beam offset and optics conditions. Effective operation additionally requires stable and reproducible first-turn injection trajectories. We develop a compact action–angle framework that expresses NLK dynamics in terms of Courant–Snyder invariants and yields an analytical bound on achievable action reduction. This formulation provides direct design rules for NLK placement, phase advance, injected-beam offset, and kicker field profile. Within this framework, we identify the 8-wire NLK as a practical baseline and extend its design by relaxing the square-geometry constraint, enabling inward shifting of the off-axis field peak while preserving on-axis field and gradient cancellation. Application to the NSLS-II lattice shows how aperture, pulsed-power, and mechanical constraints combine to determine a coupled design solution. Multi-turn tracking confirms that candidate NLK locations maintain sufficient stay-clear (aperture-clearance) margin, while the optimized wire geometry reduces the required current and Lorentz force load. The results establish a unified approach for NLK-assisted injection design and provide a practical pathway for upgrades in diffraction-limited storage rings.

Microstructure prediction for Ti-22Al-25Nb in laser powder bed fusion

This work presents a physics-informed framework for predicting solidification morphology and defect susceptibility in additively manufactured Ti–22Al–25Nb across a broad processing space. The framework integrates solidification microstructure selection (SMS) analysis with a single-track defect-based printability map to establish a unified methodology linking processing parameters to both interfacial morphology and manufacturability. Thermal gradients G and solidification rates R are first computed using the Thermo-Calc Additive Manufacturing (TC-AM) module, a finite-interface-dissipation (FID) phase-field (PF) model coupled with CALPHAD method is then employed to systematically distinguish planar and dendritic regimes as functions of $G$ and $R$. By superimposing the printability map onto the morphology projections, a comprehensive process–structure framework is obtained. Across most processing conditions, the predicted microstructure is predominantly dendritic, while planar growth emerges only under selected laser power $P$ and scan speed $v$ combinations. In addition to morphology classification, the framework quantifies the dendritic area fraction and introduces a width-based morphology descriptor to characterize the spatial extent of planar/dendritic regions within the melt pool. It provides mechanistic insight into the interplay between solidification physics and defect formation, offering practical guidance for parameter selection and microstructural control in Ti–22Al–25Nb additive manufacturing (AM).

Aragonite saturation horizon variability along North Pacific seamounts and implications for deep-sea coral reefs

The 2014 discovery of living deep-sea coral reefs along the Northwest Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and lower Emperor Seamount Chain (ESC), despite the North Pacific’s shallow aragonite saturation horizon (ASH) and high CaCO3 dissolution rates, underscores the need to understand the local seawater chemistry that allows these reefs to persist. We investigated seawater carbonate chemistry using discrete samples along the NWHI and ESC from two cruises ~1 year apart (08/26/21 – 09/26/21, 09/09/22 – 10/24/22). Across the two cruises, ASH depth difference ranged from 15 to 77 m. Since the Pacific ASH shoals by 1–2 m yr?¹, this long-term trend cannot explain the magnitude of ASH change observed between cruises. Temperature-salinity plots similarly indicate no major shifts in intermediate water masses that could account for these changes. Instead, ASH depth variability was primarily governed by localized biogeochemical processes, namely changes in intermediate water respiration and CaCO3 dissolution. Indicators for dissolution (TA*) and respiration (AOU) suggest changes in ASH depth were driven by changes in dissolution at the northern- and southern-most sites, whereas respiration exerted stronger control at central sites. Combining 2021 and 2022 data with data from 2014 – 2019 (excluding 2018) revealed high interannual ASH variability, by as much as >200 m at one site. Deep-sea coral reefs across the NWHI and ESC currently reside close to the ASH depth and likely experience seasonal and interannual shifts between under- and supersaturation. As ocean acidification progresses however, persistent exposure to undersaturated seawater could further threaten these critical deep-sea ecosystems.

A Cross‐Linked Flexible Metaferroelectrolyte Regulated by 2D/2D Perovskite Heterostructures for High‐Performance Compact Solid‐State Sodium Batteries

Abstract To address the issues of limited ionic conductivity and poor interface stability at room and low temperatures in solid‐state electrolytes, a robust intrinsic ferroelectrolyte or nanoferroelectrolyte strategy for engineering solid‐state flexible ferroelectric composite electrolytes utilizing strongly coupled intrinsic ion conducting 2D/2D sodium‐rich anti‐perovskite (NaRAP)/ferroelectric perovskite heterostructures is introduced. Herein, highly scalable PVDF‐based metaferroelectrolytes with Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/Ca 2 Na 2 Nb 5 O 16 − (CNNO − ) nanosheets into a ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP) matrix, through an in situ cross‐linking and spontaneous bridging method, for compact solid‐state sodium batteries (SSBs), are reported. Benefiting from unique well‐dispersed 3D ferroelectric coupled network and the Na 2.99 Ba 0.005 OCl/CNNO − ‐induced PVDF‐HFP ferroelectric β phase, the Na + flux is regulated, thereby inhibiting Na dendrite growth at the interface. Notably, the optimized PH‐5% NC metaferroelectrolyte exhibits rapid ion transport (1.11 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 25 °C), a wide electrochemical window (> 4.8V), superior conformal mechanical compatibility, improved flexibility, good elasticity and flame retardancy. The solid‐state Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /PH‐5% NC/Na batteries present a stable cycling performance (remaining 56.4 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C) even at 0 °C, potential for cost‐effective, safe, stable and compact SSB energy storage over 600 Wh L −1 , vastly surpassing 365 Wh L −1 of the current commercial sodium‐ion liquid‐electrolyte batteries.
