Specific Bacterial Taxa and Their Metabolite, DHPS, May Be Linked to Gut Dyshomeostasis in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Background: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are multifactorial disorders frequently associated with gut dysbiosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation; however, the pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods: Using untargeted mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and 16S sequencing of human stool, we investigated bacterial and metabolic dyshomeostasis in the gut microbiome associated with early disease stages across three NDDs—amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD)—and healthy controls (HC). Results: We discovered a previously unrecognized link between a microbial-derived metabolite with an unknown role in human physiology, 2,3-dihydroxypropane-1-sulfonate (DHPS), and gut dysbiosis in NDDs. DHPS was downregulated in AD, ALS, and PD, while bacteria involved in DHPS metabolism, Eubacterium and Desulfovibrio, were increased in all disease cohorts. Additionally, select taxa within the Clostridia class had strong negative correlations to DHPS, suggesting a potential role in DHPS metabolism. A catabolic product of DHPS is hydrogen sulfide, and when in excess, it is known to promote inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, and gut dysbiosis, known hallmarks of NDDs. Conclusions: These findings suggest that cryptic sulfur metabolism via DHPS is a potential missing link in our current understanding of gut dysbiosis associated with NDD onset and progression. As this was a hypothesis generating study, more work is needed to elucidate the role of DHPS in gut dysbiosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Microstructure-dependent particulate populations in ODS steels revealed by single-particle ICP-TOF-MS

In this work, we evaluated the ability of single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-TOF-MS) to characterize particulates generated from 300 series stainless steels and oxide dispersion–strengthened (ODS) steels. Particulates were produced using two different rotary tools (cutting disk and grinding bit) to assess the influence of particle generation on effluent particulates. Across all materials and preparation techniques, SP-ICP-TOF-MS detected a substantial population of particles containing the expected constituent elements, with average compositions closely matching the nominal alloy values. A secondary population of Y-bearing particles was evident in ODS steels; their formation is strongly favored in particulates generated using the grinding bit. Specifically, in PM2000, Y-bearing particles were predominantly colocated with Al, whereas in 14YWT, Y-bearing particles were less frequently Fe-free but showed stronger colocation with Ti. These trends are consistent with the known microstructural differences between Y–Al–O oxide particles in PM2000 and finer Y–Ti–O nanoclusters in 14YWT. Together, these results demonstrate that SP-ICP-TOF-MS can resolve distinct particulate populations in complex, multicomponent steels at the femtogram mass scale, enabling particle-resolved insight into microstructure-driven phase separation and preparation-dependent particle generation.

A Novel Low-Profile High-Efficiency Three-Phase Matrix Transformer

High step-down isolated DC-DC conversion from an 800 V DC bus to low-voltage, high-current outputs is required in automotive auxiliary converters and data center power supplies. In such applications, conventional transformer-based converters require large turns ratios, which increase winding resistance, leakage inductance, and magnetic height. This paper proposes a novel low-profile three-phase matrix transformer that realizes a large effective voltage ratio through flux division among multiple secondary legs, without increasing the physical turns count of each winding. As a result, the proposed structure reduces copper usage and transformer height while preserving the voltage conversion capability of a conventional three-phase transformer. Finite element analysis shows that the proposed design reduces magnetic height by 27%, ferrite volume by 34%, and copper volume by 28%. Circuit-level simulations of an 800 V/12 V,3 kW CLLLC dual-active-bridge converter further show that the lower winding resistance reduces total system loss by 91% and increases DC-DC efficiency from 82.6% to 97.6% at 3 kW output.

PIP-II LLRF Master Oscillator and Precision Reference Line - Station Level Design and Testing

The PIP-II superconducting linac at Fermilab requires a highly stable RF Reference Line to maintain phase syn- chronization throughout the accelerator. Temperature- induced changes in the electrical length of long coaxial cables can introduce phase drift and measurement errors. The reference-line architecture mitigates these effects by phase averaging the forward and reflected RF signals, while a phase-locked loop anchors the system to the mas- ter oscillator. This work focuses on the characterization, validation, and mechanical integration of station-level RF assemblies using CAD modeling, vector network analyzer measurements, and spectrum analyzer testing. PID-controlled thermal plates will stabilize critical RF components and further reduce temperature-dependent phase and amplitude variations. These methods sup- port repeatable, standardized designs that can be reliably integrated across the different reference-line stations.

Temperature as a control knob on spin-orbit coupling

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) governs many physical phenomena. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, Lu and Sun demonstrated that structural disorder at elevated temperatures substantially reduces the effective SOC contribution that stabilizes band inversion, driving a topological-to-normal-insulator transition in Bi2Se3. Their work identifies temperature as a meaningful control parameter for SOC-mediated topology and other properties.

RFID-Enabled Tamper-Indicating Seal

Tamper-indicating seals protect sensitive materials, valuable equipment, and critical shipments. Most conventional seals must be checked through manual visual inspection and do not provide a digital record of their condition. Some attempts to remove, alter, or bypass a seal may also leave little visible damage, making tampering difficult to identify during routine inspections. Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed a smart tamper-indicating seal that converts even subtle tampering into a persistent digital record. The seal communicates its identity and status wirelessly through standard radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers, giving organizations a faster, more reliable way to verify that an asset has remained secure.

Variational Quantum Circuits to Prepare Low Energy Symmetry States

We explore how to build quantum circuits that compute the lowest energy state corresponding to a given Hamiltonian within a symmetry subspace by explicitly encoding it into the circuit. We create an explicit unitary and a variationally trained unitary that maps any vector output by ansatz A(α → ) from a defined subspace to a vector in the symmetry space. The parameters are trained varitionally to minimize the energy, thus keeping the output within the labelled symmetry value. The method was tested for a spin XXZ Hamiltonian using rotation and reflection symmetry and H 2 Hamiltonian within S z = 0 subspace using S 2 symmetry. We have found the variationally trained unitary gives good results with very low depth circuits and can thus be used to prepare symmetry states within near term quantum computers.
