GTO Multi-Year Program Plan FY 2022-2026

The GTO Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP), building on the findings of the GeoVision analysis, outlines a 5-year plan of activities GTO will pursue to support the growth and long-term contribution of geothermal energy to the U.S. electricity grid and American homes and buildings. The MYPP outlines GTO’s vision and mission and presents a high-level technology plan for key areas of GTO research starting in Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 and running through the end of FY 2026.

Practical aspects of transfer from GTO to lunar orbit

This paper is a presentation of some practical aspects of orbital transfer from Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) to close, near-circular orbits of the Moon. The intent is to identify the important parameters affecting the problem and to bound (approximately) the range of required delta V for a spacecraft that has been placed in GTO. The basic geometric relationships are described and the dynamics are simulated by use of the Zero-Sphere-of Influence Patched Conic method. It is found that the inclination of the transfer orbit to the Earth-Moon plane is relatively unimportant while the position of the line of apsides with respect to the Moon's orbit is the main geometric parameter of interest. It is shown that this parameter can be controlled by selecting the time of day for launch and that two launch windows of approximately 45 minutes duration are available each day of the year if use is made of the recommended phasing orbit transfer. The phasing orbit transfer not only provides twice-daily launch windows, but also provides a mechanism for efficacious correction of GTO injection errors. Delta V penalties for out-of-plane transfer and for late launch are evaluated and the method is recommended for use as an affordable means of achieving lunar orbit.

A new inverter topology using GTO commutation

A new N-phase, forced commutated bridge inverter topology has been developed wherein a single Gate Turn Off Thyristor (GTO) is used to commutate each of 2N main Thyristors (SCRs). Since, for most applications, the primary loss mechanism is the SCR forward drop, very high efficiencies are possible. Compared with conventional pure SCR and pure GTO inverters, cost per kW is lower - in the former case due to the large cost differential between GTOs and SCRs. Other advantages of the new inverter include high power density, low switching losses and stresses, modulation flexibility and amenability to high voltage and high frequency operation.

Hubble space telescope: The GO and GTO observing programs, version 3.0

A portion of the observing time with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was awarded by NASA to scientists involved in the development of the HST and its instruments. These scientists are the Guaranteed Time Observers (GTO's). Observing time was also awarded to General Observers (GO's) on the basis of the proposal reviews in 1989 and 1991. The majority of the 1989 programs have been completed during 'Cycle 1', while the 1991 programs will be completed during 'Cycle 2', nominally a 12-month period beginning July 1992. This document presents abstracts of these GO and GTO programs, and detailed listings of the specific targets and exposures contained in them. These programs and exposures are protected by NASA policy, as detailed in the HST Call for Proposals (CP), and are not to be duplicated by new programs.

Trajectory Design from GTO to Near-Equatorial Lunar Orbit for the Dark Ages Radio Explorer (DARE) Spacecraft

The trajectory design for the Dark Ages Radio Explorer (DARE) mission concept involves launching the DARE spacecraft into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) as a secondary payload. From GTO, the spacecraft then transfers to a lunar orbit that is stable (i.e., no station-keeping maneuvers are required with minimum perilune altitude always above 40 km) and allows for more than 1,000 cumulative hours for science measurements in the radio-quiet region located on the lunar farside.

Trajectory Design from GTO to Near-Equatorial Lunar Orbit for the Dark Ages Radio Explorer (DARE) Spacecraft

The trajectory design for the Dark Ages Radio Explorer (DARE) mission concept involves dropping the DARE spacecraft off in a generalized geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) as a secondary payload. From GTO, the spacecraft is then required to enter a near-equatorial lunar orbit that is stable (i.e., no station-keeping maneuvers are required) and yields the required number of cumulative hours (1,000) for science measurements while in the lunar farside radio quiet cone over a span of three years. Preliminary and expected results of the corresponding trajectory design are presented herein.

Near Hartree-Fock quality GTO basis sets for the first- and third-row atoms

Energy-optimized Gaussian-type-orbital (GTO) basis sets of accuracy approaching that of numerical Hartree-Fock computations are compiled for the elements of the first and third rows of the periodic table. The methods employed in calculating the sets are explained; the applicability of the sets to electronic-structure calculations is discussed; and the results are presented in tables and briefly characterized.

Regenerative Snubber For GTO-Commutated SCR Inverter

Proposed regenerative snubbing circuit substituted for dissipative snubbing circuit in inverter based on silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR's) commutated by gate-turn-off thyristor (GTO). Intended to reduce loss of power that occurs in dissipative snubber. Principal criteria in design: low cost, simplicity, and reliability.

Near Hartree-Fock quality GTO basis sets for the second-row atoms

Energy optimized, near Hartree-Fock quality Gaussian basis sets ranging in size from (17s12p) to (20s15p) are presented for the ground states of the second-row atoms for Na(2P), Na(+), Na(-), Mg(3P), P(-), S(-), and Cl(-). In addition, optimized supplementary functions are given for the ground state basis sets to describe the negative ions, and the excited Na(2P) and Mg(3P) atomic states. The ratios of successive orbital exponents describing the inner part of the 1s and 2p orbitals are found to be nearly independent of both nuclear charge and basis set size. This provides a method of obtaining good starting estimates for other basis set optimizations.

The HRS GTO program to study the neutral hydrogen column density and D/H ratio in the local interstellar medium

Theoretical line profiles are presented that demonstrate why 100,000 spectral resolution and high S/N are needed to derive accurate column densities from spectral lines that lie close to the flat part of the curve of growth and may contain multiple velocity components. The aim of the Space Telescope high-resolution-spectrograph observing program is to obtain column densities in the hydrogen and deuterium Lyman alpha lines along a variety of lines of sight within and extending beyond the local cloudlet, in which the sun is located near an edge. The broad chromospheric Lyman alpha emission lines of late-type stars are used as background sources against which to measure the interstellar absorption features. Profiles of interstellar absorption features in Mg II and Fe II lines will be obtained to derive the broadening parameter and/or identify possible multiple velocity components in the lines of sight.

Photographic region elemental abundance analyses of Dr. David S. Leckrone's GTO HST stars 2

Activities are presented for the grant-funded work at the Dominion Astrophysical (DAO) and Casleo Observatories. A comparison is planned for the spectrograms taken at both observatories of similar stars. It is reported that of the Northern Hemisphere program stars, only 112 Her remains to be analyzed. A preliminary solution for the components of this binary system has been found. The new ATLAS9 models have been used to reevaluate the effective temperatures and surface gravities derived for all program stars. Model atmospheres are being calculated by extensive grids on workstations upgraded to the DEC 3000 model 300X running Open VMS. An attached paper describes a plan to obtain the needed gf values as well as some first applications of astrophysical gf values, the most important of which was Vega.
