Hover performance tests of baseline metal and Advanced Technology Blade (ATB) rotor systems for the XV-15 tilt rotor aircraft

Rotor hover performance data were obtained for two full-scale rotor systems designed for the XV-15 Tilt Rotor Research Aircraft. One rotor employed the rectangular planform metal blades (rotor solidity = 0.089) which were used on the initial flight configuration of the XV-15. The second rotor configuration examined the nonlinear taper, composite-construction, Advanced Technology Blade (ATB), (rotor solidity = 0.10) designed to replace the metal blades on the XV-15. Variations of the baseline ATB tip and cuff shapes were also tested. A new six-component rotor force and moment balance designed to obtain highly accurate data over a broad range of thrust and torque conditions is described. The test data are presented in nondimensional coefficient form for the performance results, and in dimensional form for the steady and alternating loads. Some wake and acoustic data are also shown.

Literature Review and Experimental Observations of the Effects of Salinity, Hardness, Lithology, and ATBS Content on HPAM Polymer Retention for the Milne Point Polymer Flood

Summary At the Milne Point polymer flood (North Slope of Alaska), polymer retention is dominated by the clay, illite. Illite, and kaolinite cause no delay in polymer propagation in Milne Point core material, but they reduce the effective polymer concentration and viscosity by a significant amount (e.g., 30%), thus reducing the efficiency of oil displacement until the full injected polymer concentration is regained [which requires several pore volumes (PVs) of throughput]. This work demonstrates that polymer retention on illite is not sensitive to monovalent ion concentration, but it increases significantly with increased divalent cation concentration. The incorporation of a small percentage of acrylamido tertiary butyl sulfonic acid (ATBS) monomers into hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) polymers is shown to dramatically reduce retention. The results are discussed in context with previous literature reports. Bridging adsorption was proposed as a viable mechanism to explain our results. Interestingly, an extensive literature review reveals that polymer retention (on sands and sandstones) is typically only modestly sensitive to the presence of oil. Extensive examination of the literature on inaccessible pore volume (IAPV) suggests the parameter was commonly substantially overestimated, especially in rock/sand more permeable than 500 md (which comprises the vast majority of existing field polymer floods).

Acoustic flight test experience with the XV-15 Tiltrotor aircraft with the Advanced Technology Blade (ATB)

An acoustic model that predicts the discrete frequency noise characteristics of helicopter rotors has been utilized in an analysis to help identify source characteristics. This technique incorporated a NASA Langley developed acoustic prediction technique, and a simplified flow field model to account for rotor wake reingestion in hover. The vehicle rotor system was modified to include the ATBs that were designed to provide for higher operating weights and improved maneuver load factor in helicopter and transition modes of operation.

Bioconversion of Agave Bagasse Lignin to Medium-Chain-Length Polyhydroxyalkanoates by Pseudomonas putida

Inadequate disposal of Agave tequilana bagasse (ATB) brings environmental and economic issues to tequila producing regions. Recent works have proposed technologies for valorization of the polysaccharide’s fractions of ATB. However, lignin bioconversion has not been investigated due to its recalcitrant nature. In this work, a systematic pretreatment is proposed to release the lignocellulosic fractions and produce medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from the lignin fraction of ATB. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses revealed that ATB lignin contained 63% of β-O-4 interunit linkages, making this lignin more suitable for pretreatment and biodegradation compared to other lignins. Exploratory experiments revealed that two-stage fermentation is suitable for PHA production from ATB lignin using wild type and engineered Pseudomonas putida strains. PHA increased from 0.09 to 0.39 g/L compared to single batch fermentation. Further improvement to 0.76 g/L was possible by using a central composite design to optimize the inoculum, substrate, and nitrogen concentrations. Finally, PHA depolymerase gene phaZ was knocked out from P. putida and tested at optimal conditions, enabling a PHA titer of 0.97 g/L. Analyses by NMR and GC-MS confirmed lignin derivatives consumption and decrease of β-O-4 linkages. This study lays the foundations to enable agave lignin bioprocessing and opens new avenues for ATB biorefineries.

OFraMP: a fragment-based tool to facilitate the parametrization of large molecules

Abstract An Online tool for Fragment-based Molecule Parametrization (OFraMP) is described. OFraMP is a web application for assigning atomic interaction parameters to large molecules by matching sub-fragments within the target molecule to equivalent sub-fragments within the Automated Topology Builder (ATB, atb.uq.edu.au) database. OFraMP identifies and compares alternative molecular fragments from the ATB database, which contains over 890,000 pre-parameterized molecules, using a novel hierarchical matching procedure. Atoms are considered within the context of an extended local environment (buffer region) with the degree of similarity between an atom in the target molecule and that in the proposed match controlled by varying the size of the buffer region. Adjacent matching atoms are combined into progressively larger matched sub-structures. The user then selects the most appropriate match. OFraMP also allows users to manually alter interaction parameters and automates the submission of missing substructures to the ATB in order to generate parameters for atoms in environments not represented in the existing database. The utility of OFraMP is illustrated using the anti-cancer agent paclitaxel and a dendrimer used in organic semiconductor devices. Graphical abstract OFraMP applied to paclitaxel (ATB ID 35922).
