Characterizing the Josephson Effect on Ba-122 Single-Crystal Junctions

This paper presents c-direction hybrid Josephson junctions with base electrodes of Co:BaFe{sub 2}As{sub 2} single crystals. To realize Josephson junctions, it applies standard photolithography technologies and a newly developed surface polishing method that was used. As conventional isotropic s-wave superconductor counter electrodes used double layers of Pb/In. The artificial barrier for the tunneling junctions consists of a thin sputtered Ti layer or a thermally evaporated Al layer; both layers were used as an insulator barrier. For characterizing the Josephson effects with TiO{sub x} barrier, we could realize I{sub c}R{sub N} products of about 13.7 μV and unconventional I{sub c}-T dependencies. The formation of Shapiro steps under the influence of microwave irradiation and magnetic field to the junctions will be discussed as well.

Structural and magnetic transitions in the planar antiferromagnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

We report the structural and magnetic ground state properties of the monoclinic compound barium iridium oxide Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 using a combination of resonant x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and thermodynamic techniques. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pronounced antiferromagnetic transition at T N ≈ 25 K, a weaker anomaly at T S ≈ 142 K, and strong magnetic anisotropy at all temperatures. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a second order structural phase transition at T S and a magnetic transition at T N . Both structural and magnetic superlattice peaks are observed at L = half integer values. The magnetization anomaly at T S implies the presence of magnetoelastic coupling, which conceivably facilitates the symmetry lowering. Mean field critical scattering is observed above T S . The magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic ground state is discussed based on the measured magnetic superlattice peak intensity. Furthermore, our study not only presents essential information for understanding the intertwined structural and magnetic properties in Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 but also highlights the necessary ingredients for exploring novel ground states with octahedra trimers.

Synthesis of Y1BaCu3O(x) superconducting powders by intermediate phase reactions

A procedure for synthesizing Y1Ba2Cu3O(x) by solid state reactions was developed. The method is based on the use of barium compounds, previously synthesized, as intermediate phases for the process. The reaction kinetics of this procedure were established between 860 C and 920 C. The crystal structure and the presence of second phases were studied by means of XRD. The sintering behavior and ceramic parameters were also determined. The orthorhombic type-I structure was obtained on the synthesized bodies after a cooling cycle in an air atmosphere. Superconducting transition took place at 91 K. Sintering densities higher than 95 percent D sub th were attained at temperatures below 940 C.

Preparation and Characterization of YBa 2 Cu 4 O 8 Superconductor

Solid-state reaction of appropriate amounts of Y 2 O 3 , BaCOs, and CuO for 2 h at 800°C in flowing oxygen with a total pressure of 2.7 x 10 2 Pa (2 mm Hg), followed by cooling and annealing at 750°C for 10 h in oxygen at ambient pressure, has produced orthorhombic YBa 2 Cu 4 O 8 (124) as the main phase with YBa 2 Cu 3 O x (123) as an impurity phase. After the as-calcined powder was annealed in oxygen at 800°C for 24 h under ambient pressure, the phase purity improved considerably. Calcined 124 powder was pressed into pellets and rapidly annealed at temperatures from 870°C to 935°C. At these temperatures, the 124 decomposed into 123. The superconducting transition temperature, T c , of the annealed samples depended upon the annealing temperature and atmosphere. The decomposed samples have been characterized by low field RF SQUID magnetometer and high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Improvement of the Superconducting Properties of GdBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} with Nano-Sized Ferrite Addition

We have been investigating the effect of (CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x} and (ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x} (x is the wt%) nano-sized ferrites on the superconducting (SC) properties of the high-T{sub c} SC compound GdBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} (Gd123) prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction technique. In this work, the magnetic hysteresis for pure Gd123 samples and samples added with nano-sized ferrites was measured using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer using a dc field up to 30,000 Oe. The magnetic J{sub c} was estimated using the extended Bean model. While a clear increase in J{sub c} values with the addition of (CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x} nano-sized ferrites is observed, a less clear positive effect on the J{sub c} values is observed with the addition of (ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x} nano-sized ferrites. These results indicate an improvement of grain connectivity, decrease of voids between the grains, and decrease of porosity in Gd123 compound resulting from CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} addition consistent with the mechanical properties measured before. (CoFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x} nano-sized ferrite addition has thus resulted in an improvement in the SC properties of Gd123 high-T{sub c} SC compound making it more convenient for applications.

Novel Experimental Approach to Obtain the Oxygen-Deficient LaBaCaCu{sub 3}O{sub y} Superconductor Compound

This work presents a novel approach based on the nitrate decomposition method for the preparation the oxygen-deficient LaBaCaCu{sub 3}O{sub y} (La1113) compound. The XRD results reveal the presence of the triple perovskite structure LaBaCaCu{sub 3}O{sub y} as a dominant phase crystallizing in the tetragonal system with the space group P4/mmm. The SEM observation shows a low porosity and EDAX data indicates the presence of the basic elements of the phase. The superconducting character of the compound is confirmed by AC susceptibility measurements with T{sub c} = 63 K even if the samples are not treated under oxygen atmosphere.

Impact of Titanium Doping on Structural, Magnetic, and Magnetocaloric Properties and Order of Transition in La{sub 0.5}Pr{sub 0.3}Ba{sub 0.2}Mn{sub 1-x}Ti{sub x}O{sub 3} (x = 0.0 and 0.1) Manganite

In this paper, we study the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of the polycrystalline peroviskite manganites La{sub 0.5}Pr{sub 0.3}Ba{sub 0.2}Mn{sub 1-x}Ti{sub x}O{sub 3} with x = 0 and 0.1. Our samples were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The XRD study has been analyzed by Rietveld refinement technique. Both samples crystallize in the rhombohedral symmetry with R 3-bar c space group. The second order of magnetic phase transition in all samples is confirmed by the Arrott analysis and the behavior of the master curve. Moreover, the magnetic entropy change ∆S{sub M} has been determined by the Maxwell relation, using phenomenological model and Landau theory. The relative cooling power (RCP) value under a magnetic field of 5 T is 236.29 J kg{sup −1} for La{sub 0.5}Pr{sub 0.3}Ba{sub 0.2}Mn{sub 0.9}Ti{sub 0.1}O{sub 3} sample which will be an interesting compound for application materials. Also, an agreement was found between the magnetic entropy change values calculated by Landau theory and those obtained using Maxwell relation above T{sub C} and a difference below it, for a magnetic field of 2 T.

Electrical, Structural, and Thermal Properties of Ferrite/Superconductor (Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x}/YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ}) Nanocomposite Materials

The superconductor YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} (Y123) is prepared by the solid-state route, while the nanosized Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} (Ni-Zn ferrite) is synthesized via citric acid sol-gel technique. The composite material of the type (Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x}/YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ}, where x = 0.00, 0.03, 0.10, and 0.50 wt%, is prepared by a modified solid-state method to study the effect of doping Ni-Zn nanosized ferrite on the superconducting, structure, and thermal properties of Y123. The prepared samples show Meissner effect which confirmed the presence of superconducting phase at liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). The prepared samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion of X-ray (EDX), infra-red (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), DC resistance by four-probe, and critical current density measurements. It was found that by increasing Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} nanoparticles in the Y123 compound, the unit cell volume of the orthorhombic phase decreases, but the transition temperature T{sub c} and critical current density J{sub c} decrease for low doping (x = 0.03 wt%) then increase (x = 0.10 and 0.50 wt%) for Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4} doped in Y123. The transport properties of the (Ni{sub 0.5}Zn{sub 0.5}Fe{sub 2}O{sub 4}){sub x}/YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}-{sub δ} composite as electrical resistance R, T{sub c}, and J{sub c} are interpreted according to Bean’s critical state model and charge-vortex interaction combined with vortex pinning in Y123 high-T{sub c} mixed-state type-II superconductor. Highlights: The critical current density J{sub c} decreased for low doping of nanosized Ni-Zn ferrite into Y123 with ratio of 0.03 wt% and increased by increasing doping ratio to 0.50 wt%. The physical properties are improved by the coexistence of the superconductor Y123 and nanosized Ni-Zn ferrites in nanocomposite material.

Calcium-Substituted Y{sub 3}Ba{sub 5}Cu{sub 8}O{sub 18} Ceramics Synthesized via Thermal Treatment Method: Structural and Superconducting Properties

In this work, Y{sub 3}(Ba{sub 1−x}Ca{sub x}){sub 5}Cu{sub 8}O{sub 18} compounds with x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.05 were synthesized by thermal treatment of aqueous solution of metal nitrates and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The effects of Ca substitution on the crystal structure, electrical resistance and the microstructure of samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), four-point probe measurement and AC susceptibility. FESEM analysis showed that there was an increase in the grain size and compactness. The zero-resistance critical temperature decreased from 92 K for the pure sample to 83 K for sample x = 0.05. From AC susceptibility result, the intra- and inter-granular loss peaks shifted toward lower temperature and become wider and broader with the increase of Ca substitution due to the weakening of grain coupling. On the other hand, the inter-granular critical current density (J{sub cm}) was found to increase with Ca substitution and has the highest value J{sub cm} = 35 A cm{sup − 2} at x = 0.05, indicating that the Ca substitution was associated with the formation of pinning centres in the Y-358 matrix.

Investigation of Magnetic and Microwave Absorption Properties of Ba{sub (1−2x)}La{sub x}Na{sub x}Fe{sub 10}CoTiO{sub 19} Hexaferrites in 18.0–26.5 GHz Band

A series of Ba{sub (1−2x)}La{sub x}Na{sub x}Fe{sub 10}CoTiO{sub 19} hexaferrite samples with x = 0.00–0.25 (step size 0.05) were prepared by using conventional solid-state reaction technique. The magnetic properties of the hexaferrites have been investigated at room temperature by employing a vibrating sample magnetometer. There is an overall decrease in saturation magnetization from 70.64 to 57.83 emu/g with an increase in doping concentration from x = 0.00–0.25. The microwave measurements were done utilizing vector network analyzer in the k-band (18.0–26.5 GHz) frequency range. The electromagnetic measurements revealed that the gross tangent loss is maximum for x = 0.10 sample. The microwave absorption measurements show that sample x = 0.10 with 1.4 mm thickness exhibits a reflection loss of − 26.59 dB (99.78% signal absorption) and 7.65 GHz bandwidth. Thus, it is considered for thin single-layer broadband microwave absorber applications in 18.0–26.5 GHz frequency range.

Structural and Magnetic Behavior of BaAl{sub x}Cr{sub y}Fe{sub 11}O{sub 19} (x + y = 1) Hexagonal Ferrites

The present study aims to analyze barium hexagonal ferrite and its derivation behavior using sol-gel auto-combustion co-doped with Al{sup 3+}/Cr{sup 3+}ions. Also, the effects of dopants on structural and magnetic properties of prepared samples were investigated. To this purpose, the finest powders were preheated at 500 °C for 1 h and calcinated at 900 °C about 2 h. Then, the magnetic powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The XRD patterns show the magnetoplumbite phase. According to the Scherrer equation applied, inserting ions led to a decrease in lattice parameters (a and c) and crystallite size. The morphology of synthesized samples was observed by FESEM and proved the hexagonal shapes of the prepared samples. The nanoparticles sizes were recorded between 59 and 79 nm. Moreover, the magnetic properties of prepared samples were specified by VSM. The saturation magnetization (M{sub s}) and remnant magnetization (M{sub r}) of the synthesized magnetic powders were decreased by inserting Al{sup 3+}/Cr{sup 3+} ions, while coercivity (H{sub c}) increased from 5215 to 7178 Oe. .

Real-Time Evolution of the Electron Clouds of Transition Metal Ions: Possible Electron-Pairing Medium in Unconventional High-Temperature Superconductors

The electron-pairing mechanism in unconventional high-temperature superconductors (HTS) has not been resolved. We proposed that the electron-pairing medium of unconventional HTS is the change of the electron clouds of transition metal ions, which is analogous to the lattice vibration in conventional superconductors. Real-time evolution of the electron clouds of transition metal ions under excitations in La{sub 2}Fe{sub 2}As{sub 2}O{sub 2}, FeSe sheet, and HgBa{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8} was calculated by the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The characteristic frequencies are 160 meV, 190 meV, and 250 meV, respectively. The frequencies are close to that of the lattice vibration in conventional HTS at high pressures, showing that the change of the electron clouds of the transition metal ions can be the electron-pairing medium.

Structural, Bulk Permittivity, and Magnetic Properties of Lead-Free Electronic Material: Ba{sub 1}Bi{sub 1}Cu{sub 1}Fe{sub 1}Ni{sub 1}Ti{sub 3}O{sub 12}

In this report, Ba{sub 1}Bi{sub 1}Cu{sub 1}Fe{sub 1}Ni{sub 1}Ti{sub 3}O{sub 12} (BBCFNTO termed further) ceramics were synthesized using a conventional ceramic processing route. The formation of multiple phases has been confirmed from by the XRD pattern at room temperature. The surface micrograph indicates the uniform distribution of grains with distinct grain boundary. The co-relation between the impedance and dielectric parameters was realized by using a phase sensitive meter over a good temperature and frequency range. The temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric properties are linked to the conduction mechanism. The dielectric constant (K) and loss (tanδ) are increased sharply at high-temperature region, which is expected to be the onset of dipolar relaxation phenomena. The contribution of grain boundary (GBs) and grain (Gs) effects can be identified using the complex impedance spectroscopy. This synthesized material is investigated to model multifunctional devices.

Non-resonant Microwave Absorption and Boundary Current Response of Ba{sub 0.34}K{sub 0.64}Fe{sub 2}As{sub 2} Superconducting Single Crystals

Boundary current response of Ba{sub 0.34}K{sub 0.64}Fe{sub 2}As{sub 2} (BaK122) single crystals was probed by non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) as a function of 100-KHz modulation field at an intermediate temperature, namely, 25 K, which is 10 K below the actual T{sub c}. The measurements were done for both field parallel and perpendicular to the iron arsenide plane configuration. A weak anisotropic effect is noted. However, it is observed that the boundary current response depends on the modulation field value and it increases as we increase the modulation field value from 1 to 9 G. Further, this boundary current response strongly depends on the microwave power. We have shown that these modulation field and microwave power dependence of the boundary current response of NRMA signals in BaK122 iron arsenide crystal can be qualitatively understood through the Dulcic model.

Vickers Microhardness Studies for SmBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} Added with NiO Nanosized Particles

The effect of nanosized particles NiO addition on the Vickers microhardness of polycrystalline SmBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} was investigated. Various amounts of nanosized particles NiO (x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, and 0.12 wt%) were added to SmBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} prepared by the solid-state reaction method. Sample characterizations were carried out using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE), Rutherford backscattering (RBS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The nanosized particle addition does not influence the orthorhombic structure of SmBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ}, whereas it affects the oxygen content δ. The electrical and mechanical properties of (NiO){sub x}SmBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-δ} samples were measured using four-standard probe technique and Vickers microhardness in order to investigate the effect of NiO nanosized particles on superconducting transition temperature and Vickers microhardness number H{sub v}. The Vickers microhardness data were analyzed using Hays and Kendall (HK), elastic plastic deformation (EPD), and modified proportional specimen resistance (MPSR) models. The analysis showed that the MPSR model was found to be the best to describe the behavior of H{sub v}.

Resistivity of Manganite Thin Film Under Strain

A complex study of the electron transport and magnetic characteristics of epitaxial manganite films La{sub 0.7}Ba{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} (LBMO) was carried out under conditions of the crystal structure tension caused by a mismatch between the parameters of the LBMO crystal and the substrate. The epitaxial thin films with the thickness 40–100 nm were grown by pulsed laser deposition at T = 700–800 °C in pure oxygen pressure 0.3–1 mbar. The substrates (110) NGO, (001) STO, (001) LAO, and (001) LSAT were used. By comparison of the lattice parameter of LBMO targets with substrate’s one, the lattice mismatches were derived. We used substrates in which the lattice parameter was less than for the LBMO crystal one. It is shown that the temperature dependence of the film resistance in the low-temperature region does not depend on the film stress and is in good agreement with the calculation that takes into account the interaction of carriers with magnetic excitations in the presence of strongly correlated electron states. A nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the resistance of an LBMO film deposited on ferroelectric crystals PMN-PT that was observed. This feature is typical for manganites, and indicating the presence of ferromagnetism in the system was observed.
