Deliverable 6.7-Final Technical Report: Development Summary and Evaluation of the Solar Uncertainty Integrator (SUNI) Software

The Data Quality and Uncertainty Integration Project was a three-year effort to address stakeholder needs for assessing solar radiation resource data quality based on existing tools for estimating radiometer measurement uncertainties and assessing post-measurement data quality. The annual research objectives for the project addressed a logical progression of effort needed to achieve the ultimate project goal of developing the Solar Uncertainty Integrator (SUNI) software. This final technical report summarizes the development process for achieving these key research objectives and addresses the outreach and code development efforts in the final year of the project to develop a new solar irradiance data uncertainty integration software package.

Freight Analysis Framework Version 5 (FAF5) Base Year 2017 Data Development Technical Report

The Freight Analysis Framework (FAF) integrates data from a variety of sources to create a comprehensive national picture of freight movements among states and major metropolitan areas by all modes of transportation. The latest of this data series is FAF5, which is the fifth generation FAF and is benchmarked on Commodity Flow Survey (CFS) 2017. Except for FAF1 that provided estimates for truck, rail, and water tonnage for calendar year 1998, later generations of FAF (FAF2 through FAF5) were built based on their benchmark year CFS data, for 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 respectively. The FAF is produced under a partnership between Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). As a major data product of the FAF program, the FAF regional database provides a national picture of freight flows to, from, and within the United States (among regions and states), by commodity and mode for the base year, as well as for forecasts up to 30 years into the future in a 5-year interval. Additional FAF data products also include FAF network flows database, where truck movements are routed onto the national highway network, estimates of annual projections, and synchronized historical data series. This report is a technical document prepared to describe the data sources and methodologies applied in the process of building the FAF5 base-year 2017 regional database, released as FAF5.0 in February 2021. This report offers a description of the diverse data sources and modeling methods used in constructing the base year FAF5 regional database. The FAF5 base-year database is used as the base for development of forecasts and for assignment of truck flows on highway network. Similarly, the FAF5 base-year database will be used as the base to generate FAF5 annual estimates. In addition to this report, users are encouraged to refer to the FAF5 User’s Guide, which provides basic information of the data, including definitions of the data attributes, information on how to access the data and tool, as well as detailed data dictionary and code tables.

Report on technical development in ANL for innovative creep testing and measurement

This report summarizes a research effort undertaken by Argonne National Laboratory to accelerate the development of creep data package for ASME code qualification. Progress on the fabrication of a 3-sample load train and the application of a direct current potential drop (DCPD) technique to measure large creep strains are reported. Specifically: (1) The 3-sample load train, with three sets of Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT), has been fabricated and assembled. (2) A DCPD method for creep-strain measurement up to 50% has been demonstrated. The DCPD data matches very well to LVDT results, suggesting its potential application in future creep testing. The technical developments contribute towards shortening the time needed to generate a creep data package for an ASME code case of the laser powder bed fusion 316H stainless steel, an effort under the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program.

Final Report for the Development of the NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS)

The author performed a variety of research, development and consulting tasks for NASA Langley Research Center in the area of digital libraries (DLs) and supporting technologies, such as the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). In particular, the development focused on the NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS) and its transition from a distributed searching model to one that uses the OAI-PMH. The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) is an international consortium focused on furthering the interoperability of DLs through the use of "metadata harvesting". The OAI-PMH version of NTRS went into public production on April 28, 2003. Since that time, it has been extremely well received. In addition to providing the NTRS user community with a higher level of service than the previous, distributed searching version of NTRS, it has provided more insight into how the user community uses NTRS in a variety of deployment scenarios. This report details the design, implementation and maintenance of the NTRS. Source code is included in the appendices.

Low Cost HIP Fabrication of Advanced Power Cycle Components and PM/Wrought Inconel 740H Weld Development (Final Technical Report)

The objective of this Phase 1 project is to demonstrate the feasibility of structures and components for advanced fossil energy power cycle by fusion welding powder metallurgy (PM) based near net shape (NNS) hot isostatic pressing (HIP) Nickel superalloy Inconel 740H (IN740H) components to wrought IN740H components. The outcome of the project includes a prototype pipe elbow demonstration of the NNS HIP process using IN740H powder, an initial assessment of IN740H PM/wrought weldability, and a manufacturing and capital cost analysis of IN740H NNS HIP components for advanced ultra-super critical steam (AUSC) power plants. The anticipated value proposition of NNS HIP manufacturing is ~50% cost reduction of large complex components in AUSC or super-critical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles. This document is a final technical report for the project, covering efforts conducted from October 2019 to June 2021.

Offshore Testing Facility – Small Scale Turbine Testing and Development Final Technical Report

In July 2010 funding for an award was made available under contract DE-EE0004200 which is the focus of this report. Under this funding, The U.S. Department of Energy’s (USDOE) designated Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) state of Florida marine renewable energy focused Center of Excellence for Ocean Energy Technology as the Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC). The award was advertised in 2008, when the USDOE Wind and Water Program issued a funding opportunity announcement (DE-PS36-08GO98030) to establish university-led National Marine Renewable Energy Centers (NMRECs). Although FAU was selected for this opportunity, funding did not become available until 2010 at which time three of the original five years of performance remained and scope was adjusted accordingly. This award was divided into two phases. The first phase focused on marine energy turbine system enhancement and research while the second phase aimed to advance offshore capabilities and testing opportunities for small-scale demonstration turbines. The project’s objective was to increase the nation’s capabilities, knowledge, and competitiveness with respect to ocean current energy technology. This project successfully achieved these goals by advancing marine energy technology testing opportunities and capabilities. This report details these accomplishments by phase and task. Descriptions include any relevant results, challenges, achievements, and outcomes. Additional intellectual products and publications are listed in the Appendix where detailed technical explanations can be found. Further, because this award designated SNMREC as a USDOE center, it challenges FAU to continue providing value for the marine energy sector in the long term. The direct accomplishments of this project, though noteworthy, are also the seeds for a greater partnership between the USDOE and FAU. SNMREC, leveraging its designation as an NMREC under this award, will expand these contributions for decades to come as a coordinated sustainable program that can serve the marine energy sector’s needs as they arise.
