Improving charge transport in integrated MoO 3 /C electrode materials for water-in-salt energy storage systems by incorporating oxygen vacancies

Improvements in the charge storage properties of α-MoO 3 used as an electrode with a 30m ZnCl 2 water-in-salt electrolyte have been achieved by enhancements in electron and ion transport enabled by an inventive synthesis route. Electron transport was improved through the integration of MoO 3 with dopamine-derived carbon via a chemical preintercalation route, and enhanced ion transport was achieved by incorporating oxygen vacancies in MoO 3 structure through ethanol 2 reduction under hydrothermal conditions. Here, the presence of carbon was confirmed by corresponding D and G bands observed in Raman spectroscopy measurements. The presence of oxygen vacancies was proven through correlated XPS, TGA, Raman spectroscopy and XRD analyses, with the introduction of oxygen vacancies leading to an expanded interlayer region. Four-point probe measurements provided evidence of increased electronic conductivity due to the incorporation of carbon, and cyclic voltammetry-based charge storage mechanism analyses revealed increases in ion transport kinetics due to oxygen vacancy formation. Tuning the oxygen vacancy concentration is critical, as excessive concentrations of these point defects leads to structural instability and poor capacity retention. This work demonstrates the combined potential of carbon and oxygen vacancies in moderate concentrations to enhance the charge storage properties of transition metal oxides. The strategies developed in this study offer a path to the development of promising materials for high-rate, high-capacity, and long-duration electrochemical energy storage technologies.

Hierarchically structured MoO 2 /dopamine-derived carbon spheres as intercalation electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

A hydrogen peroxide initiated sol-gel process involving molybdenum transformation in the presence of dopamine (Dopa) hydrochloride excess produced the metastable precipitate composed of polydopamine (PDopa) spheres coated with Dopa preintercalated molybdenum oxide, (Dopa) x MoO y @PDopa. The hydrothermal treatment (HT) of the (Dopa) x MoO y @PDopa precursor resulted in the simultaneous carbonization of Dopa and molybdenum reduction generating MoO 2 nanoplatelets distributed and confined on the surface of the Dopa-derived carbon matrix (HT-MoO 2 /C). The consecutive annealing (An) of the HT-MoO 2 /C sample at 600 °C under Ar atmosphere led to the formation of MoO 2 with increased Mo oxidation state and improved structural stability (AnHT-MoO 2 /C). Annealing had also further facilitated interaction between the molybdenum-derived and Dopa-derived components resulting in the modification of the carbon matrix confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Morphology of both materials is best described as Dopa-derived carbon spheres decorated with MoO 2 nanoplatelets. These integrated metal oxide and carbon structures were tested as electrodes for lithium-ion batteries in the potential window that corresponds to the intercalation mechanism of charge storage. The AnHT-MoO 2 /C electrode showed enhanced electrochemical activity, with an initial specific discharge capacity of 260 mAh/g and capacity retention of 67% after 50 cycles, compared to the HT-MoO 2 /C electrode which exhibited an initial specific discharge capacity of 235 mAh g –1 and capacity retention of 47% after 50 cycles. The rate capability experiments revealed that the capacity of 93 mAh/g and 120 mAh/g was delivered by the HT-MoO 2 /C and AnHT-MoO 2 /C electrodes, respectively, when the current density was increased to 100 mA/g. Here, the improved specific capacity, electrochemical stability, and rate capability achieved after annealing were attributed to higher crystallinity of MoO 2 , increased oxidation state of Mo, and formation of the tighter MoO 2 /carbon contact accompanied by the annealing assisted interaction between MoO 2 and Dopa-derived carbon.

Lepidocrocite Titanate–Graphene Composites for Sodium-Ion Batteries

To overcome electronic transport issues of layered titanates in sodium-ion batteries, we have designed and synthesized composites of lepidocrocite titanates with reduced graphene oxide through a solution-based self-assembly approach. The parent lepidocrocite titanate (K 0.8 [Ti 1.73 Li 0.27 ]O 4 ) was exfoliated by a soft-chemical approach and mechanical shaking. Exfoliated layered titania sheets (LTO) were then combined with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layers to assemble into composites through flocculation. Countercations (i.e., Mg 2+ ) were used for the self-assembly of negatively charged titania and rGO nanosheets via flocculation. The carbon content in the composites was tuned from 1 to 17% by changing the ratio of titania and rGO sheets in the mixed colloidal suspensions. Electrodes were processed with as-prepared LTO-rGO composites without any carbon additives and tested in sodium half-cell configurations. Mg + -coagulated LTO-rGO composite electrodes deliver higher capacities than electrodes prepared with coagulated titania sheets and 10% acetylene black in sodium half-cells and display good capacity retention after 50 cycles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate lower charge transfer resistance for LTO-14.5%rGO composites than that of coagulated titania sheets with 10% acetylene black. A power law analysis of cells containing the composites indicate a hybrid mechanism consisting of both surface and diffusional processes. A comparison with a similar system, that of dopamine-derived LTO-C heterostructures, reveal significant differences. While capacities showed a strong dependence on carbon content for the dopamine-derived materials, this was not true for the LTO-rGO composites. Instead, the highest capacity was obtained for the 14.5% rGO sample, with a lower value obtained for the 17% rGO sample. A greater proportion of the redox processes were surface rather than diffusional in nature for the LTO-rGO composites as well.
