Design Heating and Cooling Load Calculation Versus Building Load Simulation for Cold Climate Heat Pumps: Understanding the "Gap"

This report explores the differences between Manual J-equivalent block load calculations and building HVAC energy simulation results using EnergyPlus™ calculations when designing cold climate heat pump systems for residential use. This study will help HVAC researchers and advanced designers understand the impacts of oversizing heat pumps on home energy use.

Land classification of south-central Iowa from computer enhanced images

The author has identified the following significant results. Enhanced LANDSAT imagery was most useful for land classification purposes, because these images could be photographically printed at large scales such as 1:63,360. The ability to see individual picture elements was no hindrance as long as general image patterns could be discerned. Low cost photographic processing systems for color printings have proved to be effective in the utilization of computer enhanced LANDSAT products for land classification purposes. The initial investment for this type of system was very low, ranging from $100 to $200 beyond a black and white photo lab. The technical expertise can be acquired from reading a color printing and processing manual.

NASCAP user's manual, 1978

NASCAP simulates the charging process for a complex object in either tenuous plasma (geosynchronous orbit) or ground test (electron gun source) environment. Program control words, the structure of user input files, and various user options available are described in this computer programmer's user manual.

Maintenance of NASTRAN (R) as a state-of-the-art computer program

The maintenance requirements for a large, general purpose, finite element computer program are presented. The program is maintained as state-of-the-art on three computer systems (IBM, CDC, and UNIVAC) with respect to both finite element and computer technology. There are four primary areas involved in the maintenance effort: (1) error correction; (2) incorporation of advances in technology; (3) documentation; and (4) new level generation. The complexity of the maintenance effort is compounded by the sizes of the program (400,000 lines of code) and the documentation (7000 pages divided into seven manuals).

Space Shuttle payload bay acoustics prediction study. Volume 3A: Addendum to computer users' manual

Since the publication of the Computer User's Manual for Payload Acoustics Environment for Shuttle (PACES), the analytical model was validated by means of measured data from the first three shuttle lift-offs. During the validation process, new information became available and five changes were made to the input data and the computer program. Three changes affect the user. They are: a revision to the recommended exterior sound pressure levels, a revision to the recommended payload bay acoustic absorption coefficients, and a revision to the vertical station datum for the payload bay. The two other changes do not involve the user. The changes are associated with the output of confidence limits for the predicted space-average sound pressure levels in the payload bay, and a modification to the analytical representation of the payload bay door. The changes are discussed briefly in this Addendum to the Computer User's Manual.

Interim user's manual for boundary layer integral matrix procedure, version J

A computer program for analyzing two dimensional and axisymmetric nozzle performance with a variety of wall boundary conditions is described. The program has been developed for application to rocket nozzle problems. Several aids to usage of the program and two auxiliary subroutines are provided. Some features of the output are described and three sample cases are included.
