Algal Biomass Conversion to Fuels via Combined Algae Processing (CAP): 2019 State of Technology and Future Research

NREL’s algae state of technology benchmarking efforts focus both on front-end algal biomass production and separately on back-end conversion to fuels through NREL’s “combined algae processing” (CAP) pathway. The production model is based on outdoor long-term cultivation data, enabled by comprehensive algal biomass production trials conducted under the Development of Integrated Screening, Cultivar Optimization, and Verification Research consortium (DISCOVR) efforts, driven by data furnished by Arizona State University (ASU) at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) testbed site. The CAP model is based on experimental efforts conducted under NREL research and development projects. This report focuses on back-end conversion of algal biomass through the CAP pathway, highlighting the 2019 updates to minimum fuel selling price (MFSP). This milestone reports on key process sustainability indicators for the CAP conversion stage including mass and carbon yields to fuels and coproducts, freshwater consumption, and facility power balances/natural gas demands.

Grand Challenges in the Science of Making Torque from Wind: Then and Now

Shifting the electricity supply to renewable sources within the next two decades is the first step in decarbonizing the energy sector, and wind energy will play a central role in enabling this rapid energy transition to clean energy. The international wind energy research community - including NREL researchers - has determined that for wind power to fulfill its expected role as a major global supplier of carbon-free energy, critical challenges around the design, development, and deployment of wind energy must be addressed - quickly. Paul Veers and other NREL researchers joined 100 worldwide wind energy experts in writing a series of 10 articles for publication in Wind Energy Science. With the support and guidance of the European Academy of Wind Energy Publications Committee, the articles synthesize and clarify the most critical wind energy science needs. This presentation introduces the concept of the Grand Challenges and its 10 articles.

Understanding Resilience Valuation for Energy Systems: An Overview of the NREL-NYSERDA Research Collaboration

Energy resilience has become a national priority as Americans experience more power outages attributed to climate change, extreme weather, and cyber events. Energy system owners and operators recognize that they must prepare differently for outages today than they did in the past. Decision makers at all levels face unique challenges and opportunities in effectively and equitably executing a transition to more resilient power systems. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently added resilience to its mission statement. The authority engaged with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in a collaborative effort to: 1) understand options for measuring and valuing resilience investment benefits, and 2) inform how resilience could be operationalized across NYSERDA initiatives and program areas.

"A" is for Ammonia: Current Challenges, Emerging Research and NREL's Vision for a Decarbonized Future [Slides]

Ammonia (chemical formula NH 3 ) is so pervasive in our history that human beings simply wouldn't exist without it: 4 billion people on this planet are fed by food grown using ammonia fertilizer, but this powerful molecule consumes nearly 2% of the world's energy supply to be produced at an industrial scale. This guest lecture will first explore the energy challenges of ammonia's current means of industrial production, followed by a new vision for its synthesis using only renewable electricity, air and water, and opportunities to use ammonia as a hydrogen source. Fertilizer may one day fuel more than just our mouths.

How Cloud is Accelerating Research at NREL

This presentation coincides with AWS's announcement of their new Parallel Computing Service (PCS) which allows for easy creation of HPC-style clusters in their AWS cloud computing platform. I helped them beta test this service before it was made generally available in August. AWS asked if we would be interested in discussing our experience with the PCS service, and our experience with HPC workloads in the cloud in general, so this slideshow discusses a brief history of scientific computing at NREL and shares a bit of our experiences and approach to utilizing cloud services for HPC-style workloads.

Securing Our Water Future: NREL's Research in Desalination of Nontraditional Water Sources

Today's water supply is built on a 20th century model of fresh water sources, centralized treatment, and wastewater discharge. But that model - especially in remote coastal communities or in disaster relief scenarios - is quickly becoming unsustainable. That's why researchers are looking to non-traditional water sources and new desalination technologies to provide our nation's industries and communities with a resilient, cost-effective water supply for the 21st century.

PHEV Distribution Grid Integration and Smart Systems Testing: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report

To continue NREL's mission, which includes preparing technologies and markets with "speed and scale," NREL researchers will collaborate with Toyota on plug-in electric vehicle technology. Toyota will provide a collection of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ("PHEVs" [and ultimately including PEVs], collectively, the "Vehicles") to conduct infrastructure interaction testing at NREL facilities. NREL will use available resources in the Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility (VTIF), its staff parking garage with numerous commercial Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment ("EVSEs"), and its Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) to safely execute research experiments that highlight potential distribution system power quality challenges related to plug-in electric vehicles. The expected outcome of this project is a better understanding of the correlation of individual vehicle power quality attributes to a system of vehicles on a distribution network. The data collected and the simulations conducted will be used to guide future experiments and project development that aid in the deployment of plug-in electric vehicles ("PEV").
