Materials Data on Nb3Ga by Materials Project

Nb3Ga crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3n space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Nb is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Nb and four equivalent Ga atoms. Both Nb–Nb bond lengths are 2.59 Å. All Nb–Ga bond lengths are 2.90 Å. Ga is bonded to twelve equivalent Nb atoms to form a mixture of face and edge-sharing GaNb12 cuboctahedra.

High temperature superconductor NB3Ga

The discovery of superconductivity at 20.3 K in the Nb-Ga system by applying chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques to the materials preparation problem is reported. Films on ceramic substrates have been grown with superconducting onsets of up to 20.3 K. Critical fields at 4.2 K in excess of 300 kG and alpha's of 1100,000 T-A/sq cm have been obtained. The results confirm that the outstanding properties of Nb-Ga are due to an equilibrium configuration of the system, namely, the stoichiometric A-15 compound Nb3Ga, which is stable at relatively low temperatures. Practical materials preparation problems center on the codeposition of an adjacent Nb5Ga3 phase and the requirement that the deposition temperature be low. Some ternary alloys were also prepared, with part of the Ga replaced by Sn, Sb, Al, or Ge.

Properties of superconducting Nb3Ga materials.

The superconducting-to-normal phase boundary was studied experimentally in several Nb-Ga materials as a function of applied field and superconducting transition temperature. When properly fabricated, the stoichiometric material Nb3Ga yields a superconducting transition temperature of 20.3 K, the highest yet reported for a binary alloy. Preliminary work shows that Nb-Ga materials with a superconducting transition temperature of 19 K can be made by chemical vapor deposition, a process commonly used for producing commercial superconducting tape.

Superconductivity in d- and f- band metals; Proceedings of the Conference, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., October 29, 30, 1971.

High critical field measurements are discussed together with the lattice dynamics of transition metals, energy bands for transition metals and compounds, the importance of transverse acoustic phonons in A-15 superconductors, and aspects of electron-phonon coupling in transition metals. Other subjects considered include the superconductivity of Nb3Ga, the transition temperature of transition-metal superconductors, the relation of normal and superconducting properties to the electronic density of states, and questions of the superconductivity of various ternary thorium compounds. Individual items are abstracted in this issue.

Superconductivity, cohesive energy density, and electron-atom ratio in metals

It is shown that superconductivity above 8 K occurs in alloys and metallic compounds within relatively narrow regions of cohesive energy density with a sharp peak which includes Nb3Ge, SiV3, Nb3Ga, and NbN. When cross-correlated with the electron-atom ratio, high-temperature superconductivity can be observed in only a few regions. This suggests a search for superconductors with high-transition temperatures and critical fields within these regions.
