Bonding and Microstructural Stability in Ni55Ti45 Studied by Experimental and Theoretical Methods

Spiral orbit tribometry friction tests performed on Ni-rich Ni55Ti45 titanium ball bearings indicate that this alloy is a promising candidate for future aerospace bearing applications. Microstructural characterization of the bearing specimens was performed using transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, with NiTi, Ni4Ti3, Ni3Ti, and Ni2Ti4Ox phases identified within the microstructure of the alloy. Density functional theory was applied to predict the electronic structure of the NixTiy phases, including the band structure and site projected density of states. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy was used to verify the density of states results from the density functional theory calculations, with good agreement observed between experiment and theory.

Research and development of HgZnTe as an infrared material

Interfacial morphology and Fermi level pinning behavior at the interfaces of Al, Ag, and Pt with UHV-cleaved CdTe and ZnTe have been studied using X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies. Results are compared to metal/HgCdTe interface formation, where the weak HgTe bond and consequent ease of Hg loss strongly influence semiconductor disruption and metal-semiconductor intermising. For Al/CdTe, the strong Al-Te reaction yields a significantly more extensive Al-Te reacted region than has been observed for HgCdTe. The Al/ZnTe interface is observed to be more abrupt than Al/CdTe. The final Fermi level pinning positions, Ef-Evbm for Al, Ag, and Pt on p-type CdTe and p-ZnTe have been determined. Efi is found to be roughly the same for both CdTe and ZnTe, with the value for ZnTe lying approximately 0.2 eV closer to the VBM for all three metals. From these results, one would expect Schottky barriers of about the same height for these metals on p-CdTe and p-ZnTe; and also that, in principle, metal interfaces with the two alloys HgCdTe and HgZnTe would have the same properties. Comparisons and implications for electrical behavior of metal contacts to the alloys are discussed.

CdTe and ZnTe metal interface formation and Fermi-level pinning

Interfacial morphology and Fermi-level pinning behavior at the interfaces of Al, Ag, and Pt with UHV-cleaved CdTe and ZnTe are studied using X-ray photoelectron and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies. Results are compared to metal/HgCdTe interface formation. For Al/CdTe, a case is found where significantly greater intermixing occurs in CdTe than seen on HgCdTe. The Al/ZnTe interface is also more abrupt than Al/CdTe. Band bending results for interfaces of all three metals with p-CdTe and p-ZnTe are presented and implications for metal/HgZnTe interface formation are considered.

Nano-interconnection for microelectronics and polymers with benzo-triazole

Benzo-Triazole (BTA) is considered as an important bridging material that can connect an organic polymer to the metal electrode on silicon wafers as a part of the microelectronics fabrication technology. We report a detailed process of surface induced 3-D polymerization of BTA on the Cu electrode material which was measured with the Ultraviolet Photoemission Spectroscopy (UPS), X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), and Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). The electric utilization of shield and chain polymerization of BTA on Cu surface is contemplated in this study.

International Conference on Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation Physics, 8th, Lunds Universitet, Sweden, Aug. 4-8, 1986, Proceedings

The interactions of VUV radiation with solids are explored in reviews and reports of recent theoretical and experimental investigations from the fields of atomic and molecular physics, solid-state physics, and VUV instrumentation. Topics examined include photoabsorption and photoionization, multiphoton processes, plasma physics, VUV lasers, time-resolved spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation centers, solid-state spectroscopy, and dynamical processes involving localized levels. Consideration is given to the fundamental principles of photoemission, spin-polarized photoemission, inverse photoemission, semiconductors, organic materials, and adsorbates.
