A protein scaffold enables hydrogen evolution for a Ni-bisdiphosphine complex

We find that an artificial metalloenzyme acting as a functional biomimic of hydrogenase enzymes was activated by assembly via covalent attachment of the molecular complex, [Ni(PN glycine P) 2 ] 2- , within a structured protein scaffold. Electrocatalytic H2 production was observed from pH 3.0 to 10.0 for the artificial enzyme, while no electrocatalytic activity was observed for similar [Ni(PNP) 2 ] 2+ systems.

Indoor versus Outdoor Air Quality during Wildfires

The human behavioral modification recommendations during wildfire events are based on particulate matter and may be confounded by the potential risks of gas-phase pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Moreover, the majority of adults spend over 90 percent of their time indoors where there is an increased concern of indoor air quality during wildfire events. We address these timely concerns by evaluating paired indoor and outdoor PAH concentrations in residential locations and their relationship with satellite model-based categorization of wildfire smoke intensity. Low density polyethylene passive air samplers were deployed at six residential sites for one week in Eugene, Oregon with matched indoor and outdoor samples and twenty-four-hour time resolution. Samples were then quantitatively analyzed for 63 PAH concentrations using gas-chromatography. A probabilistic principal components analysis was used to reduce all 63 PAHs into an aggregate measure. Linear regression of the first principal component against indoor versus outdoor shows that indoor gas-phase PAH concentrations are consistently equal or greater than outdoor concentrations. Regression against a satellite-based model for wildfire smoke shows that outdoor, but not indoor gas-phase PAH concentrations are likely associated with wildfire events. Furthermore, these results point towards the need to include gas-phase pollutants such as PAHs in air pollution risk assessment.

Bioinspired Catalyst Design Principles: Progress in Emulating Properties of Enzymes in Synthetic Catalysts

Catalysis enables many aspects of modern life, including fuels, products, plastics, and medicines. Recent advances in catalysis have enabled us to realize higher efficiencies and new processes. Ideally, we seek to achieve high rates of selective conversions using catalysts derived from abundantly available elements and operating under mild conditions, specifically lower reaction temperatures and pressures. Such catalysts could enable decentralized, on-demand synthesis of chemicals and energy carriers. Nature has demonstrated the feasibility of this approach with enzymes, which showcase catalytic processes at low temperatures and pressures with nonprecious metals. Current thinking holds that in addition to the active site, the complexity of the enzyme structure, specifically the protein scaffold, is also critical to achieving this performance. Recreating this environment has been a long-standing scientific goal. However, we still understand the functions of enzymes better than we understand the de novo design of catalysts that mimic enzymes features, while also retaining their activity and selectivity under more demanding conditions. Here, in this Perspective, we will critically examine four key areas of catalyst design that incorporate the chemical and structural properties of enzymes into synthetic catalysts: (i) the use of confinement to enhance catalytic activity, (ii) tailoring the environment around the active site, (iii) proton transport, and (iv) bifunctionality and cooperativity.
