In a delay-lock one-delta (+or - 1/2 chip) dithered PN code tracking loop, an indication of lock in the PN code tracking loop is provided by delaying the dithered local PN code by a half chip to produce a +0, -1 dithered PN code that is then multiplied with the received PN-spread IF signal to produce a signal proportional to the correlation of this dithered code offset from the received code. The correlation signal is bandpass filtered, amplified with AGC control, and square-law detected to obtain a dc signal proportional to the degree of correlation. The dc signal is multiplied by the dithering control signal to effectivity substract noise voltage from the lock correlation signal which is then compared with a PN lock status signal.
This poster is a sequel to a paper presented at the 34th Annual AAS Guidance and Control Conference in 2011, which first introduced dither-based calibration of gyro scale factors. The dither approach uses very small excitations, avoiding the need to take instruments offline during gyro scale factor calibration. In 2017, the dither calibration technique was successfully used to estimate gyro scale factors on the GOES-16 satellite. On-orbit dither calibration results were compared to more traditional methods using large angle spacecraft slews about each gyro axis, requiring interruption of science. The results demonstrate that the dither technique can estimate gyro scale factors to better than 2000 ppm during normal science observations.
A higher-order phase dithering technique that reduces the complexity of digital sinusoid generation is presented and analyzed. M(sup th) order phase dithering denotes the addition of M independent, uniform variates to the sinusoid phase prior to word-length reduction. Spurious magnitudes due to quantization effects are accelerated from the usual -6 dBc per phase bit to -6(M + 1) dBc per phase bit, while the noise power increases linearly in M. For a given spurious specification, higher-order phase dithering permits the use of fewer phase bits than the non-dithered system, resulting in an exponential reduction in look-up table size, dramatically decreasing system complexity.
A study is conducted of the effect of dither on the nonlinear element of a single-input single-outout feedback system. Nonlinearities are considered with memory (backlash, hysteresis), in the feedforward loop; a dither of a given amplitude is injected at the input of the nonlinearity. The nonlinearity is followed by a linear element with low-pass characteristic. The stability of the dithered system and an approximate equivalent system (in which the nonlinearity is a smooth function) are compared. Conditions on the input and on the dither frequency are obtained so that the approximate-system stability guarantees that of the given hysteretic system.
A single degree-of-freedom oscillator subject to linearly swept and/or dithered excitation is considered. Dither refers to the variation of an excitation frequency about a given nominal, or primary, frequency. Dither in rocket engine turbopump shaft speeds can be an important consideration when analyzing the dynamic response of turbomachinery components such as turbine blades. Results indicate that the incorporation of dithered excitation into a fatigue analysis may extend the predicted fatigue life of the structure by a factor of two or more.
We discuss new results of coronagraphic simulations demonstrating a novel mode for JWST that utilizes sub-pixel dithered reference images, called Small-Grid Dithers, to optimize coronagraphic PSF subtraction. These sub-pixel dithers are executed with the Fine Steering Mirror under fine guidance, are accurate to approx.2-3 milliarcseconds (1-σ/axis), and provide ample speckle diversity to reconstruct an optimized synthetic reference PSF using LOCI or KLIP. We also discuss the performance gains of Small-Grid Dithers compared to the standard undithered scenario, and show potential contrast gain factors for the NIRCam and MIRI coronagraphs ranging from 2 to more than 10, respectively.
A new type of phase detector for pseudonoise code tracking is introduced and analyzed in comparison with the delay lock loop (DLL) and tau-dither loop (TDL) configurations. It is shown that the double dither loop (DDL) combines the best features of the DLL and the TDL in that the DDL is insensitive to gain and offset imbalances and does not suffer the 3-dB degradation in noise performance typically associated with the TDL. The double dither concept is applicable to other dual channel detectors such as in a Costas-type carrier tracking loop.
Gear contact surface wear is one of the important failure modes for gear systems. Dedicated experiments are required to enable precise evaluations of gear wear for a particular application. The application of interest for this study required evaluation of wear of gears lubricated with a grade 2 perfluorinated polyether grease and having a dithering (rotation reversal) motion. Experiments were conducted using spur gears made from AISI 9310 steel. Wear was measured using a profilometer at test intervals encompassing 10,000 to 80,000 cycles of dithering motion. The test load level was 1.1 GPa maximum Hertz contact stress at the pitch-line. The trend of total wear as a function of test cycles was linear, and the wear depth rate was approximately 1.2 nm maximum wear depth per gear dithering cycle. The observed wear rate was about 600 times greater than the wear rate for the same gears operated at high speed and lubricated with oil.
Subtractive dither is a technique which may be used to reduce the occurence of compression artifacts from near-lossless compression.
Venting analyses simulate the time-dependent flow of air or another gas from one compartment to another, or to an ambient profile. The flow through the vent connecting the compartments is assumed to be one-dimensional, quasi-steady, and isentropic with an empirical discharge coefficient included to account for irreversible flow losses. When a venting analysis is performed numerically, an upper limit on the accuracy exists due to the effects of the numerical integration method. Because this manifests itself in a first-order method by a rapid oscillation about the true answer, this phenomenon is referred to as pressure dither. This paper explores the origin of the phenomenon and gives simple formulae for predicting when it will occur and the greatest achievable accuracy for a given time step.
Dither control and generator unit incorporated into reaction-wheel attitude-control system to help compensate for error caused by friction in reaction-wheel bearings at and near zero speed of wheel. Reaction-wheel attitude-control system designed primarily to maintain desired orientation of spacecraft but also useful in maintaining desired orientation of terrestrial antenna, optical instrument, or other device on aircraft, ship, land vehicle, or other moving platform. Alternating torque sufficient to overcome static friction applied at low speed.
A generic spinning missile with dithering canards is used to demonstrate the utility of an overset structured grid approach for simulating the aerodynamics of rolling airframe missile systems. The approach is used to generate a modest aerodynamic database for the generic missile. The database is populated with solutions to the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. It is used to evaluate grid resolution requirements for accurate prediction of instantaneous missile loads and the relative aerodynamic significance of angle-of-attack, canard pitching sequence, viscous effects, and roll-rate effects. A novel analytical method for inter- and extrapolation of database results is also given.
A reaction-wheel stabilized spacecraft reduces attitude errors at wheel reversals by application of a dither component to the wheel torque command signal.
Radiotelescope access to a certain part of the sky requires very low tracking rate in azimuth. The improvement of the low-rate tracking pointing throught the dither implementation is discussed in this paper
Narrowband radiation is produced from a pulsed alexandrite laser when injection seeded with the output of a low power, tunable, continuous wave single mode diode laser. Injection seeded power oscillators are easier to frequency stabilize than etalon narrowed lasers, are more efficient and less prone to optical damage. AlGaAs diode lasers are available with wavelengths from 760 to 770 nm in the oxygen A band that can be used for differential absorption lidar remote sensing of atmospheric pressure and temperature. Diodes with room temperature output at 740 nm may be cooled sufficiently to emit in the water vapor absorption band at 720-730 nm for humidity remote sensing. The diode laser linewidth of 200 MHz is sufficient to seed 2 or 3 longitudinal modes of the multi-transverse mode alexandrite laser, giving the pulsed laser a bandwidth of 0.007 to 0.014/cm.
The traditional approach to on-orbit gyro scale factor calibration has been to perform large angle rotations about each gyro axis. The maneuvers require the science instruments to be taken offline, reducing operational availability and require a significant amount of interaction from the ground. To increase operational availability and to reduce the burden on mission operators, a novel approach to gyro scale factor calibration was developed, modeled and successfully demonstrated on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-16) to estimate gyro scale factor errors to within 1500 parts per million (ppm) without taking the science instruments offline.
This article presents and analyzes a technique for reducing the spurious signal content in digital sinusoid synthesis. Spurious-harmonic (spur) reduction is accomplished through dithering both amplitude and phase values prior to word-length reduction. The analytical approach developed for analog quantization is used to produce new bounds on spur performance in these dithered systems. Amplitude dithering allows output word-length reduction without introducing additional spurs. Effects of periodic dither similar to those produced by a pseudonoise (PN) generator are analyzed. This phase-dithering method provides a spur reduction of 6(M plus one) dB per phase bit when the dither consists of M uniform variates. While the spur reduction is at the expense of an increase in system noise, the noise power can be made white, making the power spectral density small. This technique permits the use of a smaller number of phase bits addressing sinusoid lookup tables, resulting in an exponential decrease in system complexity. Amplitude dithering allows the use of less complicated multipliers and narrower data paths in purely digital applications, as well as the use of coarse resolution, highly linear digital to analog converters (DAC's) to obtain spur performance limited by the DAC linearity rather than its resolution.
