Opto-Electronic Oscillator and its Applications

We present the theoretical and experimental results of a new class of microwave oscillators called opto-electronic oscillators (OEO). We discuss techniques of achieving high stability single mode operation and demonstrate the applications of OEO in photonic communication systems.

New Schemes for Improved Opto-Electronic Oscillator

The opto-Electronic Oscillator (OEO) has already demonstrated superior spectral purity as a for microwave and millimeter wave reference signals. Experimental results have produced a performance characterized by noise as low as -50 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz and -140 dBc/Hz for a 10 GHz oscillator. This performance is significant because it was produced by an oscillator that was free running. Since the noise in an OEO is independent of the oscillation frequency, the same performance may also be obtained at higher frequency. The recent work in our laboratory has been focused in three areas: 1) realization of a compact OEO based on semiconductor lasers and modulators, 2) reduction of the close-to-carrier noise of the OEO originating from the 1/f noise of the amplifier, and 3) miniaturization of the OEO. In this paper we report on progress made in these areas, and describe future plans to increase the performance and the efficiency of the OEO.

Coupled opto-electronic oscillator

A coupled opto-electronic oscillator that directly couples a laser oscillation with an electronic oscillation to simultaneously achieve a stable RF oscillation at a high frequency and ultra-short optical pulsation by mode locking with a high repetition rate and stability. Single-mode selection can be achieved even with a very long opto-electronic loop. A multimode laser can be used to pump the electronic oscillation, resulting in a high operation efficiency. The optical and the RF oscillations are correlated to each other.

Realization of Ultra-High Spectral Purity with the Opto-Electronic Oscillator

Recent results with the Opto-Electronic Oscillator (OEO) have led to the realization of very high spectral purity. Experimental results have produced a performance characterized by a noise as low as by -50 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz for a 10 GHz OEO. The unit was built in a compact package containing an integrated DFB laser and the modulator. This performance is significant because the oscillator is free running, and since the noise in an OEO is independent of the oscillation frequency, the same result can also be obtained at higher frequencies. The result also demonstrates that high frequency, high performance, low cost, and miniature OEO can be realized with the integrated photonic technology. We have also developed a novel carrier suppression technique to reduce the 1/f phase noise of the oscillator even further. The technique is based on the use of a long fiber delay, in place of the high Q cavity, to implement carrier suppression. Our preliminary experimental results indicate an extra 10 to 20 dB phase noise reduction of the OEO with this novel technique. Further noise reduction beyond this value is expected with improved circuit design and longer reference fiber.

A New Class Of Opto-Electronic Oscillators (OEO) for Microwave Signal Generation and Processing

A new class of oscillators based on photonic devices is presented. These opto-electronic oscillators (OEO's) generate microwave oscillation by converting continuous energy from a light source using a feedback circuit which includes a delay element, and electro-optic switch, and a photodetector. Different configurations of OEO's are presented, each of which may be applied to a particular application requiring ultra-high performance, or low cost and small size.

Coupling magnons to an opto-electronic parametric oscillator

Hybrid magnonic systems have emerged as versatile modular components for quantum signal transduction and sensing applications owing to their capability of connecting distinct quantum platforms. To date, the majority of the magnonic systems have been explored in a local, near-field scheme, due to the close proximity required for realizing a strong coupling between magnons and other excitations. This constraint greatly limits the applicability of magnons in developing remotely coupled, distributed quantum network systems. On the contrary, opto-electronic architectures hosting self-sustained oscillations have been a unique platform for long-haul signal transmission and processing. Here, we integrated an opto-electronic oscillator with a magnonic oscillator consisting of a microwave waveguide and a Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) sphere, and demonstrated strong and coherent coupling between YIG’s magnon modes and the opto-electronic oscillator’s characteristic photon modes—revealing the hallmark anti-crossing gap in the measured spectrum. In particular, the photon mode is produced on-demand via a nonlinear, parametric process as stipulated by an external seed pump. Both the internal cavity phase and the external pump phase can be precisely tuned to stabilize either degenerate or nondegenerate auto-oscillations. Our result lays out a new, hybrid platform for investigating the long-distance coupling and nonlinearity in coherent magnonic phenomena, which may be found useful in constructing the future “distributed hybrid magnonic systems.”
