Magnonic spontaneous oscillation induced by parametric pumping

Spontaneous dynamic systems have attracted significant attention for their rich underlying physics such as phase-locking and synchronization. In this work, we report a new mechanism of generating magnetic spontaneous oscillation via parametric pumping. By applying a pump tone to excite propagating spin waves in a yttrium iron garnet delay line, four-wave mixing converts the pump mode into two phase-autonomous propagating magnon modes, i.e. a spontaneous mode with nearly twice the wavenumber of the pump mode and an idler mode with nearly zero wavenumber. This allows us to reliably generate ultrasharp spin wave dynamics with broad frequency tunability from the pump and magnetic field. We show that the spontaneous mode can be phase-locked to a probe tone, similar to an auto-oscillator. Furthermore, the spontaneous dynamics can be used to implement a high-gain magnonic parametric amplifier with a gain up to 40 dB. Our results open a new avenue for studying nonlinear magnonics and synchronization physics in propagating magnon geometry and for developing new magnonic devices.

Visible BaB2O4 optical parametric oscillator pumped at 355 nm by a single-axial-mode pulsed source

A visible BaB2O4 optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a single-axial-mode 355-nm source has been demonstrated. An average output power of 140 mW with a signal wave conversion efficiency of 13 percent and an idler conversion efficiency of 11 percent for a total conversion efficiency of 24 percent has been achieved. The oscillator has continuously tuned from 412 nm to 2.55 microns limited by the infrared transmission range of the crystal. Through injection seeding, single-axial-mode OPO operation with a corresponding OPO linewidth of less than 3 GHz was obtained.

Antiferromagnetic Parametric Resonance Driven by Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is a low-energy alternative to manipulate the ferromagnetic state, which has been recently also considered in antiferromagnets (AFMs). Here, we theoretically demonstrate that VCMA can be used to excite linear and parametric resonant modes in easy-axis AFMs with perpendicular anisotropy, thus opening the way for an efficient electrical control of the Néel vector and for the detection of high-frequency dynamics. Our work leads to two key results: (i) VCMA parametric pumping experiences the so-called “exchange enhancement” of the coupling efficiency and, thus, is 1–2 orders of magnitude more efficient than microwave magnetic fields or spin-orbit torques, and (ii) it also allows for zero-field parametric resonance, which cannot be achieved by other parametric pumping mechanisms in AFMs with an out-of-plane easy axis. Therefore, we demonstrate that VCMA parametric pumping is the most promising method for coherent excitation and manipulation of AFM order in perpendicular easy-axis AFMs.

Dynamic magnetic phase transition induced by parametric magnon pumping

Uncovering pathways to optically drive magnetic order-disorder transitions on ultrashort timescales can lead to the realization of novel out-of-equilibrium quantum phenomena. A long-sought pathway is to directly excite a highly nonthermal energy-momentum distribution of magnons, bypassing both charge and lattice degrees of freedom. However, this remains elusive owing to the weak coupling and large momentum mismatch between photons and magnons. Here we demonstrate strong parametric excitation of magnons across the entire Brillouin zone of the antiferromagnetic insulator Sr 2 ⁢Cu 3 ⁢O 4 ⁢Cl 2 by periodically modulating the superexchange interaction with the electric field of light. The excitation efficiency is greatly enhanced by tuning to the van Hove singularity in the magnon spectrum, sufficient to transiently collapse the antiferromagnetic state using a pulsed laser field of 10 9 V/m. The order parameter recovery timescale increases by over 1000 times as a function of excitation density, reflecting a crossover from high- to low-energy magnon dominated decay dynamics. This electric-field induced parametric magnon pumping mechanism is applicable to a broad range of magnetic insulators and opens up the possibility of dynamically engineering magnon distributions by design.

Toward Ultra‐High‐Quality‐Factor Wireless Masing Magnetic Resonance Sensing

It has recently been shown that a bolus of hyperpolarized nuclear spins can yield stimulated emission signals similar in nature to maser signals, potentially enabling new ways of sensing hyperpolarized contrast media, including most notably [1- 13 C]pyruvate that is under evaluation in over 50 clinical trials for metabolic imaging of cancer. The stimulated NMR signal emissions lasting for minutes do not require radio-frequency excitation, offering unprecedented advantages compared to conventional MR sensing. However, creating nuclear spin maser emission is challenging in practice due to stringent fundamental requirements, making practical in vivo applications hardly possible using conventional passive MR detectors. Here, in this study, we demonstrate the utility of a wireless NMR maser detector, the quality factor of which was enhanced 22-fold (to 1,670) via parametric pumping. This active-feedback technique breaks the intrinsic fundamental limit of NMR detector circuit quality factor. We show the use of parametric pumping to reduce the threshold requirement for inducing nuclear spin masing at 300 MHz resonance frequency in a preclinical MRI scanner. Indeed, stimulated emission from hyperpolarized protons was obtained under highly unfavorable conditions of low magnetic field homogeneity (T 2 * of 3 ms). Greater gains of the quality factor of the MR detector (up to 1 million) were also demonstrated.

Diode-pumped Ho:Tm:YLF laser pumping and AgGaSe2 parametric oscillator

Tuning of both the pump laser, a Ho:Tm:YLF laser operating on the 5 I 7 - 5 I 8 transition, and an AgGaSe2 parametric oscillator has been demonstrated. Tuning of the Ho:Tm:YLF laser is complicated but not frustrated by the existence of both CO2 and H2O lines in the vicinity of the laser transition. Tuning of the parametric oscillator was achieved by tuning of the pump laser. Injection seeding of the parametric oscillator on the nonresonant signal was also demonstrated. In addition, the measured efficiencies of the parametric oscillator were compared by two different methods, measuring the parametric-oscillator output energy and measuring the energy depleted from the pump. By comparison of these measurements, the intrinsic efficiency of the parametric oscillator cab be determined

Non-degenerate parametric mixing and Q-enhancement in ALN Lamb wave resonator

In this Letter, we explore a non-degenerate phase independent parametric quality factor (Q)-enhancement technique for aluminum nitride (AlN) Lamb wave resonators. Unlike other active Q-enhancement techniques which require precise phase control of the electronic feedback loop, this technique is implemented by parametrically pumping AlN material stiffness to realize a negative resistance seen at the signal path. The negative resistance is dependent on the nonlinear material modulation and multi-resonance coupling in the device. A nonlinear circuit model is developed to simulate the parametric coupling of each resonance and extract the nonlinearity of AlN from experimental data. With proper pump frequency and pump power, the device quality factor is boosted in both simulation and experiment. The demonstrated Q-enhancement method is simple to implement and can be applied to other types of resonators that have nonlinear behavior and support multi-resonance operation.
