Design of a fast computer-based partial discharge diagnostic system

Partial discharges cause progressive deterioration of insulating materials working in high voltage conditions and may lead ultimately to insulator failure. Experimental findings indicate that deterioration increases with the number of discharges and is consequently proportional to the magnitude and frequency of the applied voltage. In order to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms of deterioration produced by partial discharges, instrumentation capable of individual pulse resolution is required. A new computer-based partial discharge detection system was designed and constructed to conduct long duration tests on sample capacitors. This system is capable of recording large number of pulses without dead time and producing valuable information related to amplitude, polarity, and charge content of the discharges. The operation of the system is automatic and no human supervision is required during the testing stage. Ceramic capacitors were tested at high voltage in long duration tests. The obtained results indicated that the charge content of partial discharges shift towards high levels of charge as the level of deterioration in the capacitor increases.

Ramp technique for dc partial discharge testing

The partial discharge (PD) data presently obtained by means of a stepwise ramp technique, for the cases of high voltage (HV) components and such resin-packaged HV devices as the Space Telescope's Faint Object Camera, is acquired separately on part-way ramps to rated voltage and on the intermediate voltage plateaus. For test specimens intended for dc service, this ramp method yields more data on insulation integrity than quiescent dc measurements, especially in the case of specimens of high resistivity which causes the discharge frequency to be deceptively low at constant dc voltage. During upward ramping the voltage distribution is capacitive, and the PD behavior resembles that of an ac test. Many more pulses are obtained in the voids without the heat otherwise generated by the application of 60-Hz ac. PD histograms are presented for various materials, with and without intentional defects.

Advanced high frequency partial discharge measuring system

This report explains the Advanced Partial Discharge Measuring System in ASU's High Voltage Laboratory and presents some of the results obtained using the setup. While in operation an insulation is subjected to wide ranging temperature and voltage stresses. Hence, it is necessary to study the effect of temperature on the behavior of partial discharges in an insulation. The setup described in this report can be used to test samples at temperatures ranging from -50 C to 200 C. The aim of conducting the tests described herein is to be able to predict the behavior of an insulation under different operating conditions in addition to being able to predict the possibility of failure.

Voltage feed through apparatus having reduced partial discharge

A voltage feed-through apparatus, having reduced partial discharge, has an electrical conductor and an electrical terminal connected thereto. A semiconductor sleeve surrounds the conductor for reducing the electric field concentration at the metallic conductor surface and consequently reducing the partial discharge occurrences. An insulator sleeve encircles the semiconductor sleeve. A metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the terminal. Another insulator is connected to the metallic sleeve and surrounds a portion of the insulator sleeve forming a space therebetween. Another metallic sleeve spaced from the first metallic sleeve surrounds a portion of the other insulator.

Locating Partial Discharges in Power Transformers with Convolutional Iterative Filtering

The most common source of transformer failure is in the insulation, and the most prevalent warning signal for insulation weakness is partial discharge (PD). Locating the positions of these partial discharges would help repair the transformer to prevent failures. This work investigates algorithms that could be deployed to locate the position of a PD event using data from ultra-high frequency (UHF) sensors inside the transformer. These algorithms typically proceed in two steps: first determining the signal arrival time, and then locating the position based on time differences. This paper reviews available methods for each task and then propose new algorithms: a convolutional iterative filter with thresholding (CIFT) to determine the signal arrival time and a reference table of travel times to resolve the source location. The effectiveness of these algorithms are tested with a set of laboratory-triggered PD events and two sets of simulated PD events inside transformers in production use. Tests show the new approach provides more accurate locations than the best-known data analysis algorithms, and the difference is particularly large, 3.7X, when the signal sources are far from sensors.

Partial discharge testing under direct voltage conditions

DC partial discharge (PD) (corona) testing is performed using a multichannel analyzer for pulse storing, and data is collected during increase of voltage and at quiescent voltage levels. Thus high voltage ceramic disk capacitors were evaluated by obtaining PD data interspersed during an accelerated life test. Increased PD activity was found early in samples that later failed catastrophically. By this technique, trends of insulation behavior are revealed sensitively and nondestructively in high voltage dc components.

Preliminary Measurements of Partial Discharge Inception Voltage Degradation with Constant Temperature Aging of Magnet Wire Twisted Pairs for Electric Aircraft Motors

Electric aircraft require high reliability electric motors to meet the stringent safety standards of the aviation industry. Motor winding insulation lifetime and reliability models for electric aircraft applications are needed to enable design of high reliability and high-performance electric motors for aviation applications. Three primary stresses effect the lifetime of motor winding insulation: thermochemical, mechanical, and electrical. This paper presents preliminary experiments on twisted pairs of magnet wire targeting understanding the thermo-chemical degradation of motor winding insulation through constant temperature thermal aging. Three types of magnet wire twisted pairs where tested: polyimide insulated magnet wire, epoxy coated polyimide insulated magnet wire, and epoxy potted polyimide magnet wire. The degradation of the samples over time at temperature was tracked using partial discharge inception voltage measurements. These initial experiments were used for development of procedures and expertise in partial discharge testing and thermo-chemical aging to inform future testing. The preliminary nature of these experiments should be noted when viewing the results. Lessons learned from the experiments are documented.

The recalculation of the original pulse produced by a partial discharge

The loads on a dielectric or an insulation arrangement cannot be precisely rated without properly assessing the manner in which a pulse produced by a partial discharge is transmitted from the point of the event to the point where it is recorded. A number of analytical and graphic methods are presented, and computer simulations are used for specific cases of a few measurement circuits. It turns out to be possible to determine the effect of each circuit element and thus make some valid corrections.

Measurement of insulation integrity of IUE camera tube facsimiles by partial discharges method and diffusion of gases through various silicone rubbers

Several dummy tubes imitating the IUE Camera System design were encapsulated with Solithane 2, Conathane EN-11, Green and Black Hysols and SMRD 432. Various flaws were purposefully placed in some of these. Partial discharge testing in vacuum under direct voltage conditions was carried once a week for 12 weeks, 15 kv dc being applied during normal working hours for 40 hours duration per week. None of the units showed much damage during this time judging by the P.D. energy histograms. A more complete mathematical presentation is given on diffusion and permeation than previously. Measurements of diffusion constants for various silicone rubbers are carried out by the Time-Lag method and compared to other determinations in the literature. Calculations of the time required for diffusion through a thick wall are demonstrated in the long time approximation and for dimensions pertaining to void and wall sizes of a delamination problem in the LANDSAT-C vidicon tubes. An actual delaminated LANDSAT-C tube and some facsimiles are immersed in vacuum for long periods and tested for catastrophic breakdown due to diffusion of gas, by application of high voltage.

Partial discharge suppression in high voltage solid-state devices

Devices, methods and techniques are disclosed to suppress electrical discharge and breakdown in insulating or encapsulation material(s) applied to solid-state devices. In one example aspect, a multi-layer encapsulation film includes a first layer of a first dielectric material and a second layer of a second dielectric material. An interface between the first layer and the second layer is configured to include molecular bonds to prevent charge carriers from crossing between the first layer and the second layer. The multi-layer encapsulation configuration is structured to allow an electrical contact and a substrate of the solid-state device to be at least partially surrounded by the multi-layer encapsulation configuration.

Modeling and Characterization of Surface Discharges in Insulating Material for Spacers: Electrode Shape, Discharge Mode, and Revision of the Creepage Concept

In the design of MV AC and DC spacers, the predominant factors are surface and interface conditions. Design is generally carried out on specifications and standards which are based on long-term experience and lab testing. However, the diffusion of power electronics with a trend to increase electric field, switching frequency, and rise time to achieve higher power density calls for an innovative, global approach to optimized insulation system design. A new methodology, based on field simulation, discharge modeling, and partial discharge inception measurements, called the three-leg approach, can form the basis to optimize insulation design for any type of supply voltage waveform. This paper focuses on the influence of the type of electrode on the inception and phenomenology of surface discharges and, as a consequence, on the interpretation of the results used for application of the three-leg approach. It is demonstrated that a typical electrode system used for insulating material testing can generate both gas and surface discharges at the triple point, when the electrodes have a smooth profile that is used to avoid corona or flashover. Hence, testing partial discharge may not provide a straightforward indication of the surface discharge inception and, thus, be partially misleading for insulation design. Another takeover is that such analysis must benefit from PD testing tools endowed with analytics able to provide automatic identification of the type of defect generating PD, i.e., internal, surface, and corona, since design and remedy actions can be taken, and adequate insulating materials developed, only knowing the type of source generating PD. Hence, testing partial discharge may not provide a straightforward indication of surface discharge inception and, thus, be partially misleading for insulation design. In addition to the importance of the three-leg approach to favor reliable and optimized design of insulation systems, there is a clear need to have a PD testing tool endowed with analytics. It should preferably be able to provide automatic identification of the type of defect generating PD, i.e., internal, surface, and corona.

A new approach to the design of surface subsystems of polymeric insulators for HV and MV apparatus under AC voltage

The design of high voltage and medium voltage AC and DC standoff insulators, and, in general, of insulation systems where surface and interface properties are predominant factors, is based on specifications and standards that rely upon long-term experiences and lab testing. Surface insulating properties depend on electrical and thermal stresses, besides environmental factors, and the inception of extrinsic ageing phenomena, such as partial discharges, can be already a cause of reduced reliability and premature failure (for organic insulating materials). An innovative approach, based on field simulation, discharge modelling, and partial discharge inception measurements is presented by the authors, which can establish a solid basis to optimise insulation design for any type of supply voltage waveform. This method, the three-leg approach, is applied here to a cable system under AC sinusoidal voltage, but it can work for any type of insulation system, such as bushings, switch gears, transformers, rotating machines, and power electronics boards.

Forecasting of high voltage insulation performance: Testing of recommended potting materials and of capacitors

Nondestructive high voltage test techniques (mostly electrical methods) are studied to prevent total or catastrophic breakdown of insulation systems under applied high voltage in space. Emphasis is on the phenomenon of partial breakdown or partial discharge (P.D.) as a symptom of insulation quality, notably partial discharge testing under D.C. applied voltage. Many of the electronic parts and high voltage instruments in space experience D.C. applied stress in service, and application of A.C. voltage to any portion thereof would be prohibited. Suggestions include: investigation of the ramp test method for D.C. partial discharge measurements; testing of actual flight-type insulation specimen; perfect plotting resin samples with controlled defects for test; several types of plotting resins and recommendations of the better ones from the electrical characteristics; thermal and elastic properties are also considered; testing of commercial capaciters; and approximate acceptance/rejection/rerating criteria for sample test elements for space use, based on D.C. partial discharge.
