Review of the application piezoelectric actuators for SRF cavity tuners

Modern particle accelerators and high-energy physics experiments that deployed up to several hundred of accelerating superconducting RF cavities require accurate frequency control. This is achieved by using cavity tuners typically actuated with the piezoelectric ceramic actuators. Piezoelectric ceramic actuators have become “standard” components of the SRF cavity tuner and depending on the application could be operated in different environments: in air, at cryogenic temperature, in vacuum, and submerged in liquid helium. Different applications place different requirements on the piezo actuators, but the important parameters common to all applications are the lifetime and reliability of the actuators. Several programs targeting the development of reliable piezo actuators are presented in this contribution.

Review of the Application Piezoelectric Actuators for SRF Cavity Tuners

Large SRF Linacs and HEP experiments require accurate frequency control, which is achieved using cavity tuners typically actuated by the piezoelectric ceramic stacks. The piezoelectric ceramic stacks became ’standard’ components of the SRF cavity tuner and, depending on the application, could be operated in the different environment: in air, at cryogenic temperature, in vacuum, and submerged in liquid helium. Different applications place different requirements on the piezo actuators, but the important parameters, common to all applications, are the lifetime and reliability of the actuators. Several R&D programs targeting the development of reliable piezo actuators are reviewed in this contribution.

Piezoelectrically actuated silicon-nitride-based high-speed spatial light modulator

Advancements in light modulator technology have been driving discoveries and progress across various fields. The problem of large-scale coherent optical control of atomic quantum systems—including cold atoms, ions, and solid-state color centers—presents among the most stringent requirements. This motivates a new generation of high-speed large-scale modulator technology operating in the visible to near-infrared wavelength range. We introduce a scalable modulator technology based on piezoelectrically actuated silicon nitride resonant waveguide gratings fabricated on 200 mm diameter silicon wafers with CMOS-compatible processes. We present a proof-of-concept device with 4 × 4 individually addressable 50 μ m × 50 μ m pixels or channels, each containing a resonant waveguide grating with a ~ 780 nm design wavelength, supporting > 100 MHz modulation speeds, and a spectral response with > 20 dB extinction.

Experimental results of a magnetically coupled piezoelectric actuator to relieve microchannel heat exchanger maldistribution

Refrigerant maldistribution is a common issue in microchannel heat exchangers. Refrigerant maldistribution can have significant negative effects on the heat transfer performance and increase the pressure drop, leading to increased superheat temperature at the outlet and increased compressor work, lowering system efficiency. In this work, a novel piezoelectric-driven magnetic actuator (PEDMA) was fabricated and inserted into the inlet header of the microchannel evaporator, with the goal of improving the non-uniformity of the flow distribution by regulating the flow in the header to the microchannels. Two prototype PEDMA designs were tested and showed significant impact on the refrigerant flow in the region of actuation. In the first design, the experimental data showed superheat reductions up to 9 °C when the individual channel temperatures were measured. The second design redistributed the refrigerant such that a 1% increase in capacity was calculated for the whole heat exchanger without significantly impacting the heating efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate the successful operation of the PEDMA devices and represent a new method of active flow distribution control which is based on a simple design with minimal additional energy consumption, and which can be inserted into microchannel heat exchanger headers to potentially relieve the refrigerant maldistribution.

Mitigation of Dielectric Heating of Piezoelectric Actuators at Cryogenic Temperatures

The new generation of low beam intensity superconducting linacs will require high accelerating gradients for new scientific discoveries. The high accelerating gradient cavities in pulsed SRF linacs will experience large (~1000’s of Hz) detuning caused by Lorentz force detuning (LFD). The piezo actuators that will be used to compensate large LFD must operate at a nominal voltage of 120V to 150V to deliver the required stroke to the cavity. In this high voltage range, the piezo is expected to warm up drastically due to its location in an insulating vacuum environment. Overheating of the piezo will significantly decrease the longevity of the actuator. A collaboration between FNAL and Physik Instrumente (PI) developed a novel piezo actuator design that mitigates piezo overheating. The design consists of using a metal foam in contact with the piezoelectric ceramic stack for heat removal. The second solution used lithium niobite as an alternative material. A comparison of the temperature stability will be presented and discussed. This study characterizes the dielectric properties for both materials. The results obtained are in the temperature range of 10 K to 300 K.

Vibration isolation for centrifuge testbeds

A method for isolating vibrations for centrifuge testing devices is provided. The method comprises coupling a test payload platform to a number of piezoelectric actuators and coupling the piezoelectric actuators to a reaction mass coupled to a centrifuge arm. A layer of vibration-absorbing material is sandwiched between the reaction mass and the centrifuge arm. The centrifuge arm is rotated around an axis, and the test payload platform is vibrated with the piezoelectric actuators as the centrifuge rotates, wherein the layer of vibration-absorbing material prevents vibrations from traveling down the centrifuge arm.

Study of Different Piezoelectric Material Stroke Displacement at Different Temperatures Using an SRF Cavity

Piezoelectric actuators are used for resonance control in superconducting linacs. The level of frequency compensation depends on the piezoelectric stroke displacement. In this study, the stroke displacement will be measured with a 1.3 GHz SRF cavity by measuring the frequency shift with respect to the voltage applied. The entire system was submerged in liquid helium. This study characterizes the PZT piezoelectric actuator (P-844K093) and a lithium niobate (P-844B0005) piezoelectric actuator. All these actuators were developed at Physik Instrumente (PI). The piezoelectric displacement was measured at different temperatures.

Simulated Lorentz Force Detuning Compensation With A Double Lever Tuner On A Dressed ILC/1.3 GHZ Cavity At Room Temperature

Pulsed SRF linacs with high accelerating gradients experience large frequency shifts caused by Lorentz force detuning (LFD). A piezoelectric actuator with a resonance control algorithm can maintain the cavity frequency at the nominal level, thus reducing the RF power. This study uses a double lever tuner with a piezoelectric actuator for compensation and another piezoelectric actuator to simulate the effects of the Lorentz force pulse. A double lever tuner has an advantage by increasing the stiffness of the cavity-tuner system, thus reducing the impact of LFD. The tests are conducted at room temperature and with a dressed 1.3 GHz 9-cell cavity.

High Strain Response and Dielectric Properties of Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 TiO 3 Ceramics Doped with (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) 4+

Environmentally friendly piezoceramics Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 Ti 1-x (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) x O 3 (BNKT-FN) with FeNb (FN) ratios 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction (CSSR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the FN complexes were completely dissolved in BNKT perovskite and the structural transition occurred from ferroelectric to relaxor state. The average grain sizes for x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were found to be 0.34 μm, 0.35 μm, 0.38 μm, 0.32 μm and 0.39 μm, respectively. It is observed that the grain size increased with the addition of FN, except for x = 0.03. Here, the coercive field (E c ) and remnant polarization (P r ) of the system were decreased with increasing FN concentration and the highest E c of 21.1 kV/cm and P r of 29.2 μC/cm 2 were noted for the base pure sample. In addition, the increase of FN content steadily broadened the dielectric anomaly at maximum dielectric constant temperature (T m ) in the BNKT-FN system. Consequently, unipolar normalized strain (S max /E max ) was found to be enhanced monotonically achieving the highest value of around 654 pm/V (x = 0.02). These properties suggest that the investigated system could be a promising eco-friendly candidate for piezoelectric actuators and many other applications requiring high piezoelectric induced strain.

High and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance in the lead-free Sm-doped BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 ceramics with high Curie temperature

Large sensor piezoelectric constant (d 33 = 334 pC/N) and superior actuator piezoelectric constant (d 33 * = 552 pm/V) as well as a high Curie temperature (T C = 454 °C) were obtained simultaneously in the lead-free 0.67Bi 1.03 FeO 3 -0.33Ba 1-x Sm x TiO 3 ceramics. Such an excellent and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance with only 10% temperature variation of piezoelectric strain at the range of 25–125 °C is highly desirable for real applications. The structural origin of the enhanced piezoelectric performance is mainly attributed to the morphotropic phase boundary and the highest known tetragonality (c T /a T = 1.02) in such materials. Transmission electron microscopy and electro-mechanical phenomenological theory demonstrate that the superior d 33 and d 33 * are associated with the hybrids nanodomains (60–90 nm) and flattened thermodynamic energy profile owing to the local structure heterogeneity. Furthermore, these results are superior as the piezoelectric properties are temperature-independent and the material has large d 33 *, and high TC compared to other lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.
