Handbook of operation and maintenance instructions for Model 5208A bit synchronizer unit

Electrical/mechanical characteristics, operation, theory of operation, parts list, and electrical diagrams for the model 5208A bit synchronizer unit are provided. The unit is capable of performing the functions of bit synchronization and signal conditioning on demodulated wave trains containing amplitude, frequency, and phase distortions, as well as additive noise. Operating frequencies in the 1 to 27 MHz bit rate range are accommodated through the use of discrete frequency plug-in subunits. The unit provides 0 and 180 degree clocks and either a single signal hard decision, or a three bit quantized soft decision data output.

Intermediate term frequency measurements with the HP computing counter in the USNO clock time system

High precision frequency measurements with various integration times can be made with conventional counters by using variable gate times. The Hewlett-Packard (HP) computing counter allows such measurements over a wide range of frequencies and measurement times. This instrument can also convert period measurements into frequency by means of its arithmetic capabilities: The program library contains programs to facilitate frequency stability measurements in the most direct and convenient way. This method was used as the basis for all time scale computations, until requirements for highest resolution justified the development of an automatic data acquisition system. The phase measurements are now being made with the HP computing counter (with time interval plug-in unit) under program control from the HP System Programmer.

A three-electrode streamer chamber

A three electrode streamer chamber has been designed with basic components consisting of two glass boxes with overall dimensions 1.00 x 500 x 200 cu m filled with neon at 1 atm. Serving as a high voltage pulse source is a nanosecond voltage pulse generator with cutoff discharges at 16 atm nitrogen pressure. The discharges are designed for obtaining an adjustable pulse with an amplitude of 600 kV and a nanosecond pump. To match the chamber electrodes with the oscillator, the electrodes are manufactured in the shape of a three-wire strip line. The cutoff discharger plug-in and the operating instructions are also described here.

A Thruster Sub-System Module (TSSM) for solar electric propulsion

Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) is currently being studied for possible use in a number of near-earth and planetary missions. Thruster systems for these missions could be integrated directly into a spacecraft or modularized into a Thruster Sub-System Module (TSSM). A TSSM for electric propulsion missions would consist of a 30-cm ion thruster, thruster gimbal system, propellant storage and feed system, associated Power Processing Unit (PPU), thermal control system and complete supporting structure. The TSSM would be wholly self-contained and be essentially a plug-in or strap-on electric stage with simple mechanical, thermal, electrical and propellant interfaces. The TSSM described in this report is designed for a broad range of missions requiring from two to ten TSSM's mounted in a 2 by x configuration. The thermal control system is designed to accommodate waste heat from the power processor based on realistic efficiencies when the TSSM is operating from 0.7 to 3.5 AU's. The modules are 0.61 M (2 ft) wide by 2.29 M (7.5 ft) long and have a dry weight including propellant tank of 54.4 kg (120 lb). The propellant tank will hold 145.1 kg (320 lb) of mercury.

Fiber optic multiplexed optical transmission systems for space vehicle launch facilities

Low loss Fiber Optic Cable is being evaluated as a potential future replacement for Kennedy Space Center's 13,000 mile Wideband cable system. In order to make economical use of the wide bandwidth characteristic of glass fibers, a Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) scheme has been devised to stack many analog and digital data channels on a single fiber. The Multiplexed Optical Transmission System (MOTS) will offer a unique flexibility of plug-in modularity to meet changing data and bandwidth requirements in addition to the standard 'goodies' of immunity to lightning and other EMI, RFI type interferences, and of smaller size and lighter weight.

A cycle timer for testing electric vehicles

A cycle timer was developed to assist the driver of an electric vehicle in more accurately following and repeating SAE driving schedules. These schedules require operating an electric vehicle in a selected stop-and-go driving cycle and repeating this cycle pattern until the vehicle ceases to meet the requirements of the cycle. The heart of the system is a programmable read-only memory (PROM) that has the required test profiles permanently recorded on plug-in cards, one card for each different driving schedule. The PROM generates a direct current analog signal that drives a speedometer displayed on one scale of a dual movement meter. The second scale of the dual movement meter displays the actual speed of the vehicle as recorded by the fifth wheel. The vehicle operator controls vehicle speed to match the desired profile speed. The PROM controls the recycle start time as well as the buzzer activation. The cycle programmer is powered by the test vehicle's 12-volt accessory battery, through a 5-volt regulator and a 12-volt dc-to-dc converter.

A cycle timer for testing electric vehicles

The paper presents a cycle timer which enables the accurate following and repetition of SAE driving schedules of stop and go cycles, for electric vehicles, by reducing the human factor. The system which consists of a programmable read-only memory (PROM) stores each of these cycles, which are detailed, on its own plug-in card. The actual vehicle speed, and the PROM indicated desired speed are displayed on a dual scale meter allowing the driver to match them. A speed change is preceded by a half second buzzer warning and a new cycle by a one second warning. The PROM controls the recycle start time as well as the buzzer activation. A 5 volt regulator providing logic power, and a 12 volt dc-dc converter providing analog and memory power are described.

The Lick Observatory charge-coupled device /CCD/ and controller

A description is given of a flexible microprocessor-based controller for charge-coupled device two-dimensional detectors. It is noted that the controller can operate under manual control or as a slave to a remote computer linked by coaxial cable. The system is discussed, together with data taken at the telescope and in the laboratory. The flexibility of the controller derives from its modular form and from the use of a programmable 8-bit microprocessor to control and sequence the electronic logic. The electronic circuits for such functions as signal processing, clock sequencing, voltage level adjustment, and temperature control are on small individual plug-in cards, making future improvements and changes simple. The software of the microprocessor is stored in erasable, programmable, read-only memory. Among the limitations of the controller is a scan speed of roughly 35 microsec per pixel.
