Preparation Methods: past and Potential Methods of Food Preparation for Space

The logical progression of development of space food systems during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Shuttle programs is outlined. The preparation methods which include no preparation to heating, cooling and freezing are reviewed. The introduction of some new and exciting technological advances is proposed, which should result in a system providing crew members with appetizing, safe, nutritious and convenient food.

High Energy, Low Temperature Gelled Bi-propellant Formulation Preparation Method

A method for preparing a gelled liquid propane (GLP) composition comprises the introduction of liquid propane into an evacuated mixing vessel containing a gellant and mixing the liquid propane with the gellant. A bi-propellant system comprising GLP is particularly well-suited for outer planet missions greater than 3 AU from the sun and also functions in earth and near earth environments. Additives such as powders of boron, carbon, lithium, and/or aluminum can be added improve performance or enhance hypergolicity. The gelling agent can be silicon dioxide, clay, carbon, or organic or inorganic polymers. The bi-propellant system may be, but need not be, hypergolic.

Investigating Waste Preparation Methods for Trash-to-Gas Technologies

Trash-to-Gas technologies show promise in addressing the need for a proper waste management system onboard a long-duration space mission. However, there is a clear need to better understand how the initial waste preparation can affect the overall conversion efficiency. Factors such as the waste size, moisture content, and packing density can have significant impacts on the reactor performance. This paper will focus on the effects of various pre-processing steps on the overall solid-to-gas conversion on the state of the art Trash-to-Gas system developed at NASA Kennedy Space Center. These results will help inform future Trash-to-Gas technologies on what types of supporting subsystems will be necessary to operate effectively for exploration missions.

New methods for preparing N,N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides

The customary preparative methods for N,N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides involve the acylation of an amine by trifluoroacetic acid or its derivatives. The synthesis of N,N-dialkyltrifluoroacetamides by reacting trifluoroacetic anhydride or acid with disubstituted formamides and acetamides is discussed. These reactions were interpreted with the aid of gas chromatographic analysis. Different reaction mechanisms are proposed for the reactions of formamides and acetamides with trifluoroacetic anhydride or acid. The use of the proposed reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of other fluorinated compounds is discussed.

Intranasal scopolamine preparation and method

A new method and preparation for intranasal delivery of scopolamine provides a safe and effective treatment for motion sickness and other conditions requiring anticholinergic therapy. The preparation can be in the form of aqueous nasal drops, mist spray, gel or oinment. Intranasal delivery of scopolamine has similar bioavailability and effect of intravenous delivery and is far superior to oral dosage. Scopolamine is prepared in a buffered saline solution at the desired dosage rate for effective anticholinergic response.

An Automated Method for Ozonesonde Calibration: New Insights

An automated method for preparation of the electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesonde is presented. Development of a computer-controlled system for preparation and calibration of the ECC is an improvement over the manual preparation method, and reduces subjectivity considerably. Preparation measurements in digital form aids analysis of the ECC before release and enhances post-flight data certification. Calibration of ozonesondes over a range of ozone concentrations between 0 mPA and 30 mPA is discussed. This presentation describes the automatic system, gives examples of calibrations. The automated system enables comparison of varying potassium iodide (KI) concentrations that should allow adjustment of earlier ozonesonde data obtained with different KT concentrations used since 1970, i.e., 2, 1.5, 1, and 0.5 percent. Preliminary results indicate ECC accuracy has a strong dependence on the electrolyte concentration and should not be considered linear with altitude.

Advanced methods for preparation and characterization of infrared detector materials

Mercury cadmium telluride crystals were prepared by the Bridgman method with a wide range of crystal growth rates and temperature gradients adequate to prevent constitutional supercooling under diffusion-limited, steady state, growth conditions. The longitudinal compositional gradients for different growth conditions and alloy compositions were calculated and compared with experimental data to develop a quantitative model of the crystal growth kinetics for the Hg(i-x)CdxTe alloys, and measurements were performed to ascertain the effect of growth conditions on radial compositional gradients. The pseudobinary HgTe-CdTe constitutional phase diagram was determined by precision differential thermal analysis measurements and used to calculate the segregation coefficient of Cd as a function of x and interface temperature. Computer algorithms specific to Hg(1-x)CdxTe were developed for calculations of the charge carrier concentrations, charge carrier mobilities, Hall coefficient, optical absorptance, and Fermi energy as functions of x, temperature, ionized donor and acceptor concentrations, and neutral defect concentrations.

Methods of preparing polyimides and artifacts composed thereof

Methods of converting essentially unpolymerized precursors into polyimides in which the precursors are exposed to microwave radiation. Preheating, thermal post-curing, and other techniques may be employed to promote the development of optimum properties; and reinforcements can be employed to impart strength and rigidity to the final product. Also disclosed are processes for making various composite artifacts in which non-polymeric precursors are converted to polyimides by using the techniques described above.
