Energy-efficient multimodal mobility networks in transportation digital twins: Strategies and optimization

The study proposes a comprehensive Transportation Mobility (TransitMo) framework covering conceptual design, model formulation, optimization, simulation, and impact analysis of the transportation mobility system. TransitMo is composed of a transportation digital twin developed in Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) and an Intelligent Traffic Management and Control Center (ITMCC) that identifies the best ways to improve the movement of people within urban areas using various modes of transportation. This study encompasses advanced modeling techniques, algorithms, and strategic testing to optimize energy efficiency and mobility in a multimodal shared mobility network. TransitMo’s practical applications are exemplified through a city-scaled simulation network in Chattanooga, TN, employing demographic data to analyze historical traffic patterns and forecast future demands. Central to this methodology are three models: the User Preference Model (UP), the Energy Consumption Model (EC), and the System Optimization Model (SO). These models work in concert to iteratively devise the optimal travel incentives and minimize the total system cost in a real-time manner. In conclusion, test results verified that the proposed adaptive incentive program and optimized bus scheduling can improve network performance by increasing public transit ridership.

Community-Controlled Transportation: The Western New York E-Bike Library Network: Preprint

Shared Mobility Inc. (SMI) has used their mission of community-controlled transportation to partner with community based organizations on the launch and operations of E-Bike Libraries (EBLs) in Western New York (WNY) and beyond since 2021. For almost four years, the WNY EBLs have provided e-bikes at no cost to underserved communities in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Participants used the e-bikes for commuting, recreational rides, community bike rides, running errands, and accessing essential services. This program significantly increased e-bike accessibility, with 71% of participants being first-time riders and 78% identifying as Black/African American. Challenges such as bike maintenance, battery charging logistics, and the need for suitable storage were addressed through partnerships with community-based organizations and adjustments to program logistics. Those lessons have been applied to additional EBLs in Pacoima, California and Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which have also been launched by SMI with a continued emphasis on the importance of community based approaches to sustainable transportation. All of these programs demonstrate the potential of e-bikes to provide an affordable, efficient, and fun transportation option, particularly for underserved communities. By leveraging community partnerships and focusing on accessibility and inclusivity, E-Bike Libraries can significantly contribute to sustainable transportation solutions and promote broader participation in the transportation electrification revolution.

Shared and Ownership Mobility Technologies in the US: Data Availability and Usage Trends

This report supports the vision for a more sustainable transportation future by summarizing and analyzing the latest data on new mobility technologies, including ridesharing, shared and privately owned bikes, e-bikes, and scooters that have emerged over the past two decades. Having access to accurate and current data that is representative of new mobility systems and individual usage of these systems across different parts of the country is critical for researchers, city and regional planning professionals, and current and potential industry technology developers to better understand and forecast usage trends both nationwide as well as across different existing and potential future markets across the country. Building on the previous study published in 2022, this report incorporates the latest available market and usage data on new mobility technologies and compares usage by Chicago and New York City demographic characteristics. Moreover, this report includes recent developments and insights on privately owned micromobility technologies. Our analysis found that more downtown areas in Chicago show high per capita usage for all three modes than in the previous study, likely due to the full launch of shared e-scooter systems citywide in 2022. Notably, the majority of high shared mobility usage is concentrated in high-income, densely populated downtown areas in Chicago, which also have good public transit access. In contrast, TNC and bikeshare usage hotspots in central Manhattan are more widely distributed, though also appear to be shaped by the geography of the public transit system. Analysis of privately owned micromobility shows that the greatest energy savings occurred when e-bikes replaced single-occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips (i.e., gasoline-powered cars driven alone). Based on the literature review and analysis results, we also make recommendations for supporting the development of both shared and privately owned micromobility programs.

Dataset 1: A National and City Dataset on Human Factors in Pooled Rideshare, 2021

Dataset 1: A National and City Dataset on Human Factors in Pooled Rideshare, 2021. Dataset Description: Pooled Rideshare Acceptance Survey - Phase 1 (2021, N = 5,385). This dataset captures responses from a nationally representative sample of 5,385 adults across the United States to understand public acceptance, preferences, and behavioral intentions related to pooled rideshare (PR) services. The primary objective of this research is to provide actionable insights to inform the design, deployment, and policy development of sustainable shared mobility systems. Data was collected via an online survey administered through a national panel provider. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 95 years, and representation from all U.S. regions. The survey instrument was designed to explore numerous dimensions related to PR adoption including demographic traits, current travel habits, rideshare familiarity, trust, safety, environmental attitudes, and user experience preferences. Both rideshare users and non-users were included, offering a diverse range of perspectives. - Phase_1_Final - The dataset includes survey items developed from literature reviews, and prior field studies. Each row represents an individual respondent, and each column corresponds to a variable such as willingness to use pooled rideshare, attitudes toward specific service features, and sociodemographic data. The data is available in both .CSV and .SAV formats. - Phase_1_Final_MapFile - The accompanying data dictionary explains all variable labels, response scales, and codes. An .XLSX format of the full survey instrument is also included to support interpretation and reuse of the dataset.

Impacts and emerging research opportunities in Vehicle-Grid Integration for transportation: A review

This review provides a comprehensive examination of Vehicle-Grid Integration (VGI) technologies and their impacts on transportation systems, with a particular emphasis on the transportation-energy nexus. It systematically explores how VGI affects key transportation applications such as charging infrastructure planning, electric vehicle (EV) routing, smart charging coordination, shared mobility, and dynamic pricing. By synthesizing recent literature from both transportation and energy systems perspectives, this study highlights how advanced methodologies, such as reinforcement learning, game theory, and optimization techniques, are used to model the complex interactions between EVs, mobility patterns, and distributed energy systems. Furthermore, the review also identifies critical challenges, including behavioral factors, data limitations, and system scalability. Drawing on these insights, the paper outlines emerging research opportunities to support the design of integrated, resilient, and user-centric VGI solutions that advance sustainable mobility and energy system efficiency.

EV Shuttle Bus Pilot

The EV Shuttle Bus Pilot dataset contains data and analysis from Hocking-Athens-Perry Community Action's demonstration of an electric bus on routes of their rural Athens Public Transit system. The vehicle used in the demonstration was a Ford E-450 cutaway equipped with an electric drivetrain, a 127-kWh battery system by Motiv Power Systems, and a cabin upfit by Turtle Top. Data gathered include route assignments, running time and distance, fuel economy, and charge cycles. A comparison of the vehicle's observed duty cycle with duty cycle modeling from other rural transit fleets in the National Transit Database is included to help better understand the rural adoption potential for this fleet technology.
