Zero-Cost Closed-Loop Discharging Method for Modular Multilevel Converter Submodules Without External Circuits

A novel submodule capacitor discharging control strategy is introduced and implemented for modular multilevel converters (MMCs). By sequentially controlling the arm currents of anMMC,all submodule capacitors are discharged rapidly through internal arm resistors without additional devices and circuits, resulting in improved performance and reduced cost. A closed-loop control method is explored for the effectiveness of the new control strategy.Acomparison study is evaluated between the proposed method and the traditional methods using bleeding resistors, auxiliary resistors, and load resistors. Confirmed by the simulation and experiment, the proposed method has the maximum benefits including zero hardware cost, fast discharging time, and negligible load current impact

A Neural Network-Based Power Mismatch Elimination Strategy for Integrated Solar and ESS AC/DC Systems (MARS)

The multiport autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS) is a promising concept for the integration of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) to the transmission ac grid and a high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link. The presence of PV and ESS in each arm of the MARS results in uneven distribution of active power among different submodules (SMs), thereby leading to unbalanced SM capacitor voltages and potentially compromising the system stability. Moreover, in the case of partial shadings, shaded PV SMs will suffer from decreased power injections causing power mismatch in the MARS system. To address this issue, a neural-network-based power mismatch elimination (NNPME) strategy is proposed in this article. The proposed NNPME strategy optimizes ESS usage and leverages both dc and ac circulating currents to facilitate power transfer among the SMs, arms, and phases of the MARS system. Simulation and control hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NNPME strategy. Compared with the traditional approaches, the proposed NNPME strategy can significantly enhance system efficiency and ensure stable and continuous operation, even in the presence of uneven power distribution within the MARS system.

Open-circuit submodule fault diagnosis in MMCs using support vector machines

Series connection of semiconductor submodules (SM) in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) makes the MMC prone to open-circuit (OC) IGBT failures inside SMs. If left undetected, these faults degrade the operation of the MMC and lead to its instability. This article proposes a method to detect, localise, and classify single OC SM faults in an MMC using support vector machines (SVM) trained with data obtained from the capacitor voltage balancing block of the MMC control system. The proposed method relies on data extracted from the sorted capacitor voltage arrays of the upper and lower phase arms. Therefore, it does not require extra measurements and hardware. Additionally, it offers a fixed time for detecting and localising OC SM faults. This method is easy to implement as SVM has a simple decision function. Time-domain simulation case studies are performed on a three-phase nine-level MMC to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

The Fault Detection, Localization, and Tolerant Operation of Modular Multilevel Converters with an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) Open Circuit Fault

Reliability is one of the critical issues for a modular multilevel converter (MMC) since it consists of a large number of series-connected power electronics submodules (SMs). Here in this paper, a complete control strategy including fault detection, localization, and tolerant operation is proposed for the MMC under an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) open circuit fault. According to the output characteristics of the SM with the open-circuit fault of IGBT, a fault detection method based on the circulating current and output current observation is used. In order to further precisely locate the position of the faulty SM, a fault localization method based on the SM capacitor voltage observation is developed. After the faulty SM is isolated, the continuous operation of the converter is ensured by adopting the fault-tolerant strategy based on the use of redundant modules. To verify the proposed fault detection, fault localization, and fault-tolerant operation strategies, a 900 kVA MMC system under the conditions of an IGBT open circuit is developed in the Matlab/Simulink platform. The capabilities of rapid detection, precise positioning, and fault-tolerant operation of the investigated detection and control algorithms are also demonstrated.

Fast and fault-tolerant model predictive control of MMCs under selective harmonic elimination

Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) is a suitable pulse-width modulation (PWM) tech-nique for some applications of modular multilevel converters (MMC) with lower numberof semiconductor submodules (SM). However, SHE can make it difficult to control circu-lating currents in the MMC. Moreover, the MMC is vulnerable to SM switch failures thatreduce its output power magnitude and quality. This paper proposes a fault-tolerant modelpredictive control strategy for MMCs operating with SHE (FT SHE-MPC). The effects ofswitch failure on phase voltage waveforms are studied first. Then, a method is proposedto design the FT SHE waveform to preserve its harmonic performance. Next, the pro-posed FT SHE-MPC is designed to increase the capacitor voltages during an SM failure tomaintain the fundamental component of the faulty phase voltage and control the circulat-ing currents, maintaining balance among line voltages and the output power of the MMC.Additionally, the proposed method offers as much as 60% faster FT transition time and asmuch as 36% lower capacitor voltage ripple. The advantages of the proposed method areverified through offline and real-time simulation studies on a three-phase nine-level MMCin PSCAD/EMTDC software and RTDS.
