High-temperature quantum valley Hall effect with quantized resistance and a topological switch

Edge states of a topological insulator can be used to explore fundamental science emerging at the interface of low dimensionality and topology. Achieving a robust conductance quantization, however, has proven challenging for helical edge states. In this work, we show wide resistance plateaus in kink states—a manifestation of the quantum valley Hall effect in Bernal bilayer graphene—quantized to the predicted value at zero magnetic field. The plateau resistance has a very weak temperature dependence up to 50 kelvin and is flat within a dc bias window of tens of millivolts. We demonstrate the electrical operation of a topology-controlled switch with an on/off ratio of 200. These results demonstrate the robustness and tunability of the kink states and its promise in constructing electron quantum optics devices.

Distributed Finite-Time Termination for Consensus Algorithm in Switching Topologies

Here, in this article, we present a finite-time stopping criterion for consensus algorithms in networks with dynamic communication topology. Prior state of the art has established convergence to the consensus value; however, the asymptotic convergence of these algorithms poses a challenge in practical settings where the response from agents is required in finite time. To this end, we propose a maximum-minimum protocol that propagates the global maximum and minimum values of agent states (while running the consensus algorithm) in the network. This article focuses on establishing that the global maximum and minimum values are strictly monotonic even for a dynamic topology, and they can be used to distributively ascertain the closeness to convergence in finite time. We rigorously show that each node can have access to the global maximum and minimum by running the proposed maximum-minimum protocol to realize a finite-time stopping criterion for the otherwise asymptotic consensus algorithm. The practical utility of the algorithm is illustrated through experiments where each agent is instantiated by a NodeJS socket.io server.

Observation of Topological Chirality Switching Induced Freezing of a Skyrmion Crystal

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected quasi-particles with a well-defined chirality. Control over their chirality is proposed as an additional feature for encoding data bits or as qubits in quantum computing due to their high efficiency and stability against achiral magnetic textures. Here it is shown that an in-plane magnetic field can be utilized to reshape the energy barriers between different skyrmionic bubbles (e.g., Bloch type, type-II) enabling spontaneous chirality fluctuations with a frequency that increases with the strength of the in-plane field. The insulating van der Waals ferromagnet CrBr3 is used as an archetypal system for low damping, reduced energy dissipation and a high number of magnetic phases to capture the chirality dynamics in real time through cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that the interplay between the intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and out-of-plane field biased the chirality dynamics, favoring one handedness over the other. A remarkable consequence of the spontaneous chirality switching mechanism is that it induces a freezing (or crystallization) process in the skyrmion lattice. As the bubbles fluctuate between Bloch and type-II they elongate and shrink parallel to the in-plane field. Subsequently, the overall lattice crystallizes along the in-plane field direction, inducing a phase transition from a disordered liquid state to a hexatic phase where skyrmions are highly ordered resembling that of a solid. The results indicate chirality as an active element in the creation of topologically protected skyrmion crystals unveiling pathways toward chiral spintronic device platforms with tunable embedded configuration.

Ultrasensitive Sub-monolayer Palladium Induced Chirality Switching and Topological Evolution of Skyrmions

Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers, where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co) n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Néel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capping layer. We also observe the chiral evolution of a skyrmion during the DMI switching, where no significant topological protection is found as the skyrmion winding number varies. This corresponds to a minimum energy cost of <1 attojoule during the skyrmion chirality switching. Here, our results demonstrate the detailed chirality evolution within skyrmions during the DMI sign switching, which is relevant to practical applications of skyrmionic devices.

Towards computational polar-topotronics: Multiscale neural-network quantum molecular dynamics simulations of polar vortex states in SrTiO3/PbTiO3 nanowires

Recent discoveries of polar topological structures ( e.g ., skyrmions and merons) in ferroelectric/paraelectric heterostructures have opened a new field of polar topotronics. However, how complex interplay of photoexcitation, electric field and mechanical strain controls these topological structures remains elusive. To address this challenge, we have developed a computational approach at the nexus of machine learning and first-principles simulations. Our multiscale neural-network quantum molecular dynamics molecular mechanics approach achieves orders-of-magnitude faster computation, while maintaining quantum-mechanical accuracy for atoms within the region of interest. This approach has enabled us to investigate the dynamics of vortex states formed in PbTiO 3 nanowires embedded in SrTiO 3 . We find topological switching of these vortex states to topologically trivial, uniformly polarized states using electric field and trivial domain-wall states using shear strain. These results, along with our earlier results on optical control of polar topology, suggest an exciting new avenue toward opto-electro-mechanical control of ultrafast, ultralow-power polar topotronic devices.

Orbital character of the spin-reorientation transition in TbMn 6 Sn 6

Ferromagnetic (FM) order in a two-dimensional kagome layer is predicted to generate a topological Chern insulator without an applied magnetic field. The Chern gap is largest when spin moments point perpendicular to the kagome layer, enabling the capability to switch topological transport properties, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, by controlling the spin orientation. In TbMn 6 Sn 6 , the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the Tb 3+ ion is effective at generating the Chern state within the FM Mn kagome layers while a spin-reorientation (SR) transition to easy-plane order above T SR = 310 K provides a mechanism for switching. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering to provide key insights into the fundamental nature of the SR transition. The observation of two Tb excitations, which are split by the magnetic anisotropy energy, indicates an effective two-state orbital character for the Tb ion, with a uniaxial ground state and an isotropic excited state. The simultaneous observation of both modes below T SR confirms that orbital fluctuations are slow on magnetic and electronic time scales < ps and act as a spatially-random orbital alloy. A thermally-driven critical concentration of isotropic Tb ions triggers the SR transition.

Holographic Nano‐Imaging of Terahertz Dirac Plasmon Polaritons in Topological Insulator Antenna Resonators

Abstract Excitation of Dirac plasmon polaritons (DPPs) in bi‐dimensional materials have attracted considerable interest in recent years, both from perspectives of understanding their physics and exploring their transformative potential for nanophotonic devices, including ultra‐sensitive plasmonic sensors, ultrafast saturable absorbers, modulators, and switches. Topological insulators (TIs) represent an ideal technological platform in this respect because they can support plasmon polaritons formed by Dirac carriers in the topological surface states. Tracing propagation of DPPs is a very challenging task, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies, where the DPP wavelength becomes over one order of magnitude shorter than the free space photon wavelength. Furthermore, severe attenuation hinders the comprehensive analysis of their characteristics. Here, the properties of DPPs in real TI‐based devices are revealed. Bi 2 Se 3 rectangular antennas can efficiently confine the propagation of DPPs to a single dimension and, as a result, enhance the DPPs visibility despite the strong intrinsic attenuation. The plasmon dispersion and loss properties from plasmon profiles are experimentally determined, along the antennas, obtained using holographic near‐field nano‐imaging in a wide range of THz frequencies, from 2.05 to 4.3 THz. The detailed investigation of the unveiled DPP properties can guide the design of novel topological quantum devices exploiting their directional propagation.

Optical control of topological memory based on orbital magnetization

Under suitable conditions, some twisted graphene multilayers and transition-metal dichalcogenides become Chern insulators, exhibiting the anomalous quantum Hall effect and orbital magnetization due to spontaneous valley polarization. We study the interaction of a Chern insulator with circularly polarized light. Here, the interaction energy contains an antisymmetric term that couples to the helicity of incident light. For a two-band Chern insulator, this term is expressed as an integral involving the Berry curvature of the system. Taking advantage of this interaction, we propose an experimental protocol for switching topological memory based on orbital magnetization by circularly polarized light. Moreover, two laser beams of opposite circular polarization can nucleate domains of opposite magnetization and thus produce an optically configurable domain wall carrying topologically protected chiral edge modes.

Configuration of an optical switch fabric using machine learning

An optical switch fabric comprises two or more optical switch elements. The optical switch elements are configured in a topology. A switch control has a plurality of bias control signals. The switch control can address one or more of the optical switch elements and can apply one of the bias control signals to bias of the addressed optical switch element to establish a switch setting. The topology and switch settings determine how each of one of the inputs is connected to each of one of the outputs of the optical switch fabric. The switch settings are determined by a machine learning process which includes a model creation. The model can be made to adapt dynamically during optical switch fabric operation.

Millimeter-wave dielectric tunability driven by topological polar structure switching in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices

Dielectric tunability induced by an external electric field in materials underpins radio frequency signal modulation devices such as phase shifters, which are critical components in wireless communication and sensing systems. However, the tunability and integrability of current devices have yet to be enhanced for emerging applications, particularly at millimeter-wave frequencies. Here, we demonstrate that topological polar structures formed in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices exhibit large tunable in-plane dielectric properties, as determined by their multiscale structural configurations and polarization switching behaviors. Under a moderate field of 30 kV cm −1 , the dipole wave structure maintains a tunability exceeding 15% at 70 GHz and above 8% over the measured range up to 110 GHz, contrasting with the weakly tunable flux closure structure. Based on in situ structural characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations, we delineate the polarization switching processes and elucidate the mechanisms underlying the observed tunable millimeter-wave dielectric responses. Our results provide new insights into the high-frequency dielectric properties of topological polar phases, potentially broadening the versatility of these materials in next-generation integrated electronic applications.

Novel Quadratic High Gain Boost Converter With Adaptive Soft-Switching Scheme and Reduced Conduction Loss

In this article, an improved soft-switching quadratic boost converter is proposed. Instead of inserting an additional active clamp or auxiliary zero-voltage transition circuit at the switching node, the proposed topology connects the high-voltage switching node to the input diode node by replacing one of the input diodes with a low-rated switch. The proposed topology can attain soft-switching condition for all the switches and input diode turns- off under zero-current switching (ZCS). The operation of input-side switch not only aids zero-voltage switching (ZVS) turn- on for the main switch but also helps in reducing the conduction loss. Also, the input-side switch operates under ZCS turn- on and ZVS turn- off , making it a loss economical solution. An adaptive timing scheme for driving the input switch is proposed, which can ensure soft-switching condition under varying gain and load range. The detailed operational modes, analysis, and design considerations of the proposed topology are presented. A 250 W hardware prototype is built to validate the performance of the proposed converter operating at 100 kHz switching frequency. Results with adaptive soft-switching scheme shows that the converter is modulated to achieve its best efficiency condition under various system conditions. Furthermore, a peak efficiency of 96.1% at 155 W and efficiencies above 95.75% over a wide load range are achieved using all Si devices.

Flashlamp drive system for a high-energy 10–100 kHz pulse-burst Nd:YAG laser

We present the design of the flashlamp drive system for the NG100 laser, a 1 J/pulse, 10–100 kHz, pulse-burst Nd:YAG laser system being developed for application in a Thomson scattering plasma diagnostic. This flashlamp drive system is under active development, with a prototype now being constructed. The flashlamp drive system is modular, with each module capable of driving a series pair of linear flashlamps. Each drive module contains and is controlled by a dedicated Analog Regulator Controller. Thus each module is independently operable and controllable. This modular approach imposes no intrinsic limit to the number of modules that may be applied to drive the flashlamp pairs in a laser system. Each flashlamp drive module has a switch-regulated topology. An 1800 V main capacitor bank provides 25 kJ of energy storage, while a lower voltage output capacitor bank provides filtering and the initial energy delivered to the flashlamps at the start of the drive pulse. The main bank is recharged after each flashlamp drive pulse. As energy is drawn from the output bank by the flashlamps, an IGBT switching regulator feeds current from the main bank through an inductor to replenish the output capacitor bank. The rate of replenishment is feedback-controlled to maintain a regulated supply of power to the flashlamp load, with a setpoint range of 0.07 to 1.65 MW. An Analog Regulator Controller produces two-state variable pulse width feedback switching of the regulator IGBT. The switching frequency is ≤ 20 kHz, dynamically adjusted to limit ripple of the flashlamp power to ±3% statistical standard deviation of mean. For development or troubleshooting, each module is operable independent of the laser digital control system (microcontroller and FPGA).

Bending effects and optical properties of WSe 2 nanoribbons of topological phase

A WSe 2 monolayer of 1T' phase is a large band gap quantum spin Hall insulator, supporting dissipationless charge and spin transports through the topologically protected edge states. Here, in this work, we explore the nanoribbon forms of 1T' phase WSe 2 by first-principles density functional calculations and the many-body perturbation GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation method. We found that the 1T' WSe 2 nanoribbon can show topological edge states with a ribbon width of ~4-6 nm. Those edge bands show crossing through the Fermi level an odd number of times, with one kind of spin-polarization connecting the valence band continuum and conduction band continuum. The topological features of the edge bands hold even under small and medium bending in the nanoribbon, while large bending induces large band splitting, resulting in a topological switch-off in the edge bands. The semiconducting 1T' WSe2 nanoribbon shows a large tunability with bending in optical absorption spectra and exciton states. The lowest-energy exciton is changed from optically dark in the flat nanoribbon to bright in the bent nanoribbons. These properties in the 1T' WSe 2 nanoribbons suggest potential applications in controllable quantum electronics and exciton-based quantum information processes.

Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms

The “Modular HF Isolated MV String Inverters Enable a New Paradigm for Large PV Farms” project focuses on exploring alternative power converter and system-level plant configurations to achieve the lowest cost and highest energy output for a given solar plus storage (e.g., PV + battery) plant, including the use of medium voltage (MV) collection while taking into account detailed models of all elements. To realize this objective, four approaches were utilized (i) employ a novel Medium Voltage String Inverter (MVSI) topology (soft switching solid state transformer – S4T) to convert 1000 Vdc to 4.16 kVac; (ii) plant collection using standard, low-cost overhead MV distribution network; (iii) enable energy storage integration without additional converter cost to achieve dispatchability of the PV resource; and (iv) provide advanced functionality (autonomous operation, track ISO signals for dynamic balancing and ancillary services, and PV farm operation as a virtual grid resource). Subsequently and in alignment with the previously mentioned approaches, the project was structured in five efforts (i) S4T MVSI simulation and design; (ii) system analysis and storage optimization; (iii) financial analysis; (iv) power converter prototype build and test; and (v) regulatory and commercial impact study. The outcomes provided by each effort can be summarized as follows (i) Project explored the use of MV AC distribution architecture for hybrid PV+storage utility-scale PV farms; (ii) Detailed loss and LCOE analysis for AC and DC side BESS architecture, including multiple converter topologies, as well as for proposed MVSI/MDCT systems; (iii) MVSI was built and holds promise but needs lower-cost high-voltage Si-C devices, which does not seem possible in the near term; (iv) MDCT provides a simpler modular building block – validated through HIL and farm level modeling, simulation and experimental validation; (v) 300 kVA MDCT prototype built and tested, technology is being commercialized; and (vi) Regulatory model of utility building PV plants, where PV panels are treated as DC generation (IPP), seems viable and can allow improved grid integration.

Deep Reinforcement Learning based Model-free On-line Dynamic Multi-Microgrid Formation to Enhance Resilience

Multi-microgrid formation (MMGF) is a promising solution for enhancing power system resilience. This paper proposes a new deep reinforcement learning (RL) based model-free on-line dynamic MMGF scheme. Additionally, the dynamic MMGF problem is formulated as a Markov decision process, and a complete deep RL framework is specially designed for the topologytransformable micro-grids. In order to reduce the large action space caused by flexible switch operations, a topology transformation method is proposed and an action-decoupling Q-value is applied. Then, a convolutional neural network (CNN) based multi-buffer double deep Q-network (CM-DDQN) is developed to further improve the learning ability of the original DQN method. The proposed deep RL method provides real-time computing to support the on-line dynamic MMGF scheme, and the scheme handles a long-term resilience enhancement problem using an adaptive on-line MMGF to defend changeable conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using a 7-bus system and the IEEE 123-bus system. The results show strong learning ability, timely response for varying system conditions and convincing resilience enhancement.
