These experiments demonstrate that COEOs are promising compact sources for generating low jitter optical pulses and low phase noise RF/millimeter wave signals.
The continued need for increased bandwidth is driving the pursuit of both increased speed in TDM and more channels in WDM for fiber optic communication systems.
In this paper, we will present the design and fabrication of an integrated semiconductor laser/modulator using the identical active layer approach on InGaAsP/InP material.
We present experimental results of coupled opto-electronic oscillators (COEO) constructed with a semiconductor optical amplifier based ring laser, a semiconductor Fabry-Perot laser, and a semiconductor colliding pulse mode-locked laser.
Multi-wavelength arrays of colliding pulse mode-locked (CPM) lasers have been demonstrated for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) applications. The need for increased bandwidth is driving the development of both increased speed in time division multiplexing (TDM) and more channels in WDM for fiber optic communication systems.
These experiments demonstrate that COEOs are promising compact sources for generating low jitter optical pulses and low phase noise RF/millimeter wave signals.
The current status of tunable diode lasers (TDLs) for spectroscopy and metrology systems is reviewed.

Waveguide photodetector (WGPD) results have recently been presented demonstrating the very large bandwidth-efficiency product potential of these devices. Improved saturation and linearity characteristics are realized in waveguide p-i-n photodetectors at 1.3 ??y using an asymmetric cladding structure with InA1GaAs/InGaAsP in the anode and InGaAsP in the cathode.
High density wavelength division multiplexed (HD-WDM) systems place stringent requirements on the absolute wavelength and wavelength spacing of the elements in Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser arrays. An analysis of the fabrication tolerances for ridge waveguide and buried heterostructure DFB lasers is performed, showing the fabrication-induced wavelength variations present in these types of devices.
Wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems place stringent requirements on the absolute wavelength and wavelength spacing of the elements in laser arrays. Ridge waveguides (RW) show excellent potential for practical implementation due to their simple fabrication with relaxed fabrication tolerances, high reliability and good performancce. An analysis of the fabrication tolerances for RW and buried heterostructure (BH) devices is performed, showing the advantages offered by the ridge design.
The authors present the input-normal Riccati parameterization which allows a minimal plant (A, B, C, D) to be represented completely by its B, C, and D matrices. In addition to the basic parameterization, they present useful gradient expressions for a cost functional J(A, B, C, D) when the plant is restricted to the input-normal Riccati form. The parameterization is valid for both stable and unstable, and continuous-time and discrete-time systems.
Control problems in developing force feedback control to use in remotely connecting, disconnecting, and reconnecting the umbilical fuel lines of the Space Shuttle Vehicle are discussed. A docking protocol is proposed, indicating the required role of force feedback. The use of active force feedback control is examined and performance requirements and experimental results are given. A single degree-of-freedom force feedback model is presented and the application of classical control compensation techniques to the force control loop to increase flexibility is considered. In addition, possible modifications to the controller and plans for future research are discussed.
The MAST Flight System as a test bed for large space structure control algorithms is discussed. An overview is given of the control system architecture. The actuators, the sensors, the control computer, and the baseline damping algorithm are discussed.
Comparative Michelson interferometers are discussed as well as the operating range potential of a structural alignment sensor (SAS) which requires only one laser mode. Schematics are presented for the distance measurement logic, the basic SAS system, the SAS optical layout, the coarse measurement signal processor, and the measured range resolution.
Compact device is used to determine impact sensitivity of material in static, high pressure, gaseous environment. It can also be instrumented to monitor and record pressure, temperature, and striker impact force. Device is used in conjunction with commercially available liquid oxygen impact tester which provides impact energy.
