Applications of robust control theory - Educational implications

A survey is made of applications of robust control theory to problems of flight control, control of flexible space structures, and engine control which have appeared in recent conferences and journals. An analysis is made of which theoretical techniques are most commonly used and what implications this has for graduate and undergraduate education in aerospace engineering.

Robust decoupled servomechanism theory for linear multivariable systems

Decoupling theory and robust servomechanism theory are applied to the design of linear multivariable systems with large parameter variations. In addition to being approximately decoupled in the transient period, the over-all system achieves tracking and disturbance rejection robustly in the steady state.

Perfect decoupling of linear systems with discrete parameter uncertainties

A design procedure based on Gilbert's decoupling parameters for determining a fixed state feedback control law which decouples a linear system with discrete parameter uncertainties is described. Perfect decoupling conditions are established which involve a test for the existence of a solution to a system of linear equations. An actual solution of the linear equations yields the decoupling control law.

Observing the states of systems with unmeasurable disturbances

In order to estimate the state of a linear time-invariant multivariable system by using a Luenberger observer, it is generally assumed that all system inputs are measurable. This correspondence presents a simple and useful procedure for the construction of minimal-order state estimators for systems with unmeasurable disturbances.

On the computation of minimal indices for linear multivariable systems

This paper presents an algorithm for the computation of the minimal indices for linear multivariable systems. The same algorithm can be used to determine the rank of a transfer function. As an application, this algorithm is shown to be useful in the design of non-interacting control systems.
