PV Modules Temperature Variation and Patterns in Medium and Utility-Scale Floating PV Systems

This paper presents the preliminary results and findings of the four operational Floating PV systems across the USA. At each site, temperature of five PV modules located at North-West, North-East, Middle, South-West, and, South-East have been monitored through the Resistant Temperature Detector (RTD) sensors. Three RTDs were attached to each PV module on the rear-side along the diagonal at top, middle and bottom cells. The preliminary results reveal wide temperature differences among the inter and intra PV modules. Besides this, wave pattern temperatures were observed in a few PV modules. The final results, findings, and, factors responsible will be investigated during the next few months.

Quantifying and Valuing Fundamental Characteristics and Benefits of Floating PV Systems

This project undertook the first systematic and comprehensive collection of Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) related techno-ecological data across diverse geographic regions of the United States. It examined FPV performance, assessed potential environmental risks and benefits, and provided data to support the development of research protocols for better understanding the impacts of FPV. As part of this process, we conducted a detailed study of four existing FPV sites and three land-based PV (LPV) sites in Florida and California.

PV Lifetime Project (2024 NREL Annual Report)

DOE’s PV Lifetime project was initiated in 2016 with the goal of accurately characterizing the early-life evolution of photovoltaic (PV) field performance. Different PV cell and module technologies result in different initial degradation rates due to effects like light-induced degradation (LID) and light & elevated temperature-induced degradation (LeTID). To accurately characterize the initial field degradation of maximum power (Pmp) requires the use of high-accuracy indoor IV curve measurements at standard test conditions. Therefore, PV modules involved in this study are removed from the field once or twice per year and brought indoors for measurement under constant temperature and irradiance conditions.
