Level structures of 56,58 Ca cast doubt on a doubly magic 60 Ca

Gamma decays were observed in 56 Ca and 58 Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from 57,59 Sc beams at ≈200 MeV/nucleon. For 56 Ca, a γ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for 58 Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $2^{+}_{1}\rightarrow0^{+}_{gs}$ decays, and were compared to results from ab initio and conventional shell-model approaches. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $2^{+}_{1}$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the 0$f$ 5/2 and 0$g$ 9/2 orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic 60 Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to 70 Ca or even beyond.

Investigation of the ground-state spin inversion in the neutron-rich Cl 47 , 49 isotopes

A first γ -ray study of Cl 47 , 49 spectroscopy was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory with Ar 50 projectiles at 217 MeV/nucleon, impinging on the liquid hydrogen target of the MINOS device. Prompt deexcitation γ rays were measured with the NaI(Tl) array DALI2 + . Through the one-proton knockout reaction Ar 50 ( p , 2 p ) , a spin assignment could be determined for the low-lying states of Cl 49 from the momentum distribution obtained with the SAMURAI spectrometer. A spin-parity J π = 3 / 2 + is deduced for the ground state of Cl 49 , similar to the recently studied N = 32 isotope K 51 . The evolution of the energy difference E ( 1 / 2 1 + ) - E ( 3 / 2 1 + ) is compared to state-of-the-art theoretical predictions.

Update of ASHRAE Standard 140 Section 5.2 and Related Sections (BESTEST Building Thermal Fabric Test Cases)

This report documents new work intended to update the current building thermal fabric software-to-software comparative test specifications and example results of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140-2017, Sections 5.2.1, 5.2.2, 5.2.3, and related supporting sections. The Building Energy Simulation Test and Diagnostic Method (BESTEST) test specification and example results that provide the basis for these Standard 140 sections were originally published in 1995. The state of the art in building energy simulation modeling has advanced since then. Additionally, comments on the test specification over the years highlighted ambiguities, further necessitating the update to the original work. This new work was conducted for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in collaboration with a working group of international experts associated with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standing Standard Project Committee (SSPC) 140. SSPC 140 is responsible for ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140. The new work, presented in this report, defined the test cases and specifications such that building energy simulation programs with time steps of one hour or less can perform the tests. Revisions to the test specification and update of example results follow the vetting process of iterative field trials established for previous BESTEST work that has been adapted for ASHRAE Standard 140.

Development of Transition-Edge Sensor X-ray Microcalorimeter Linear Array for Compton Scattering and Energy Dispersive Diffraction Imaging

In this paper we present a strip transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter linear array detector developed for energy dispersive X-ray diffraction imaging and Compton scattering applications. The prototype detector is an array of 20 transition-edge sensors with absorbers in strip geometry arranged in a linear array. We discuss the fabrication steps needed to develop this array including Mo/Cu bilayer, Au electroplating, and proofof-principle fabrication of long strips of SiNx membranes. We demonstrate minimal unwanted effect of strip geometry on X-ray pulse response and showlinear relationship of 1/pulse height and pulse decay times with absorber length. For the absorber lengths studied, our preliminary measurements show energy resolutions of 40-180eV near 17 keV. Furthermore, we show that the heat flow to the cold bath is nearly independent of the absorber area and depends on the SiNx membrane geometry.

Luminescence from Poly-Si Films and its Application to Study Passivating-Contact Solar Cells

In recent years, polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) based passivating-contact solar cells have received tremendous attention from the solar research community due to its excellent surface passivation and high carrier conductivity. However, the poly-Si films are not transparent to all wavelengths of the solar spectrum. There is often some parasitic absorption in these films. From a different standpoint, as they absorb some light, they can luminesce. This phenomenon provides us with unique opportunities to investigate optoelectronic properties of the films in a fast, contactless, and nondestructive manner. In this work, we report the luminescence phenomenon from poly-Si films used in passivating-contact solar cells. We then utilize this phenomenon to report a range of applications for solar cells including studies of carrier transport behaviors and hydrogenation inside the films.

On-Board Planning for New Millenium Deep Space One Autonomy

The Deep Space One (DS1) mission, scheduled to fly in 1998, will be the first NASA spacecraft to feature an on-board planner. The planner is part of an artificial intelligence based control architecture that comprises the planner/scheduler, a plan execution engine, and a model-based fault diagnosis and reconfiguration engine...This paper describes the on-board planning and scheduling component of the DS1 autonomy architecture.
