Physics-Based Retrieval of Surface Roughness Parameters for Bare Soils from Combined Active-Passive Microwave Signatures

Abstract

In the past the effect of soil roughness was often considered secondary within the determination of soil moisture from remote sensing data. Several studies showed that accurate determination of soil roughness leads to an improved estimation of soil moisture. Two default parameters to describe the surface roughness are the standard deviation of the surface height variation 𝑠 and the surface correlation length 𝑙 with its corresponding autocorrelation function. Both parameters (𝑠,𝑙) affect the emissivity measured by radiometers as well as the backscattering observed by radars. In this study, we develop a physics-based approach to retrieve 𝑠 and 𝑙 by combining both microwave signals based on active-passive microwave covariation. To test the approach, containing a forward model and a retrieval algorithm, we used active/passive microwave data measured with the ComRAD truck-based SMAP simulator at L-band. Results and validations with corresponding field measurements on ground show that 𝑠 and 𝑙 can be estimated simultaneously when using this approach. The physics-based retrieval algorithm works robustly for two investigated test fields having an RMS-Error of 0.68 cm and 0.69 cm between the microwave-based and field-measured 𝑠-values, and of 3.13 cm and 3.04 cm for 𝑙-values. The first validation of the results reveals that the influence of the autocorrelation function, needed within the retrieval, is distinct.

Nucleation and growth of blue phase liquid crystals on chemically-patterned surfaces: a surface anchoring assisted blue phase correlation length

In condensed matter, the correlation length is an essential parameter which describes the distance over which a material maintains its structural properties. In liquid crystals, for the orientational order parameter this characteristic length is of the order of nanometers, while in solid crystals it can extend to macroscopic length scales. Here, we report the measurement of the correlation length, or persistence length, of the crystallographic orientation of blue phases (BPs)β€”chiral liquid crystals with long-range 3D-crystalline structures and submicron-sized lattice-parameters. These materials exhibit phase transformations that have been identified as the liquid analog of crystal-crystal martensitic transformations. In this work, we use liquid epitaxial growth to achieve spontaneous BP-crystal nucleation and subsequent growth. Specifically, we design patterned substrates made of a binary array of regions with different liquid crystal anchoring, which facilitate a uniform nucleation and growth of BP-crystals with (100)-lattice orientation and a simple cubic symmetry. Furthermore, our results indicate that this simple cubic BP, the so-called blue phase II (BPII), forms first on the patterned surface, thereby propagating the growth of domains in directions parallel or perpendicular to the patterned regions. These results are used to understand the emergence of a surface anchoring assisted BPII-correlation length, taken as the distance over which the BP preserves its lattice orientation, as a function of time and pattern characteristics. We found that BPII single crystals can be achieved on patterned regions whose lateral dimensions are equal to or larger than 10 ΞΌm, consistent with our measurements of the BPII-correlation length. This newly acquired understanding of the role of surfaces on the formation of BPs is then used to design processes that permit formation of macroscopically large mono-domain, single-crystal BPs by relying on significantly reduced patterned areas (only part of the area is patterned), a feature that could benefit the applications of this intriguing class of materials.

Simultaneous Retrieval of Surface Roughness Parameters for Bare Soils from Combined Active-Passive Microwave SMAP Observations

An active-passive microwave retrieval algorithm for simultaneous determination of soil surface roughness parameters [vertical root-mean-square (RMS) height (s) and horizontal correlation length (l)] is presented for bare soils. The algorithm is based on active-passive microwave covariation, including the improved Integral Equation Method (IΒ²EM), and is tested with global soil moisture active passive (SMAP) observations. The estimated retrieval results for s and l are overall consistent with values in the literature, indicating the validity of the proposed algorithm. Sensitivity analyses showed that the developed roughness retrieval algorithm is independent of permittivity for Ξ΅β‚› > 10 [-]. Furthermore, the physical model basis of this approach (IΒ²EM) allows the application of different autocorrelation functions (ACF), such as Gaussian and exponential ACFs. Global roughness retrieval results confirm bare areas in deserts such as Sahara or Gobi. However, the type of ACF used within roughness parameter estimation is important. Retrieval results for the Gaussian ACF describe a rougher surface than retrieval results for the exponential ACF. No correlations were found between roughness results and the amount of precipitation or the soil texture, which could be due to the coarse spatial resolution of the SMAP data. The extension of this approach to vegetated soils is planned as an add-on study.

Simultaenous Retrieval of Surface Roughness Parameters from Combined Active-Passive SMAP Observations

Soil roughness strongly influences processes like erosion, infiltration, moisture and evaporation of soils as well as growth of agricultural plants. An approach to soil roughness based on active-passive microwave covariation is proposed in order to simultaneously retrieve the vertical RMS height (s) and horizontal correlation length (l) of soil surfaces from simultaneously measured radar and radiometer microwave signatures. The approach is based on a retrieval algorithm for active-passive covariation including the improved Integral Equation Method (I2EM). The algorithm is tested with the global active-passive microwave observations of the SMAP mission. The developed roughness retrieval algorithm shows independence of permittivity for > 10 [-] due to the covariation formalism. Results reveal that s and l can be estimated simultaneously by the proposed approach since surface patterns of non-vegetated areas become evident on global scale. In regions with sandy deserts, like the Sahara or the outback in Australia, determined and confirm rather smooth to semi-rough surface roughness patterns with small vertical RMS heights and corresponding higher horizontal correlation lengths.
