Mark I Silicon Carbide Integrated Circuit Test Oven Assembly and Programming Guide

This report provides a parts list, with assembly and programming instructions for building firstgeneration (Mark I) compact test ovens; this oven design is customized for prolonged functional electrical testing of prototype silicon carbide (SiC) devices at temperatures up to 500 °C (932 °F). The general approach of using multiple compact ovens to perform long-term, high-temperature electronics testing efficiently is described in a conference paper (Izadnegahdar, Alain, et al.: Alternative Setup for LongDuration Low-Duty-Cycle 600 °C Ambient Testing of SiC Integrated Circuits. International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society (iMAPS) HiTECH 2021 Technology Crossover Extravaganza, 2021), available at https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20210011676. The new Mark I oven design described here offers several significant improvements over the compact oven described in that paper. For example, it is constructed from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and requires minimal assembly. Much of the work involves drilling holes in the two aluminum project boxes, which contain the control electronics and the oven itself. The cost of components is less than $200 (USD) per oven, which makes constructing multiple ovens affordable. In addition, the two-box design separates the high-temperature heater from the electronics, which keeps the electronics cool, prolonging the lifetime of these components.

Silicon Carbide Pressure Sensors for Venus Environment

We report on the evaluation of 4H-SiC piezoresistive pressure sensors in the simulated Venus environment of the NASA Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER). The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the survivability of the pressure and temperature sensors and ancillary packaging components when subjected to the high pressure and aggressive chemical media that are characteristic of the Venus environment. Interest in Venus has been stimulated by the ongoing debate about Earth's planetary evolution, particularly in regards to its climate, and NASA has proposed a flagship mission to Venus to be launched in the near future. Quantifying how the Venus evo-lution ran its course will greatly aid researchers trying to model Earth's climate dynamics.

Novel High Temperature Capacitive Pressure Sensor Utilizing SiC Integrated Circuit Twin Ring Oscillators

This paper describes initial development and testing of a novel high temperature capacitive pressure sensor system. The pressure sensor system consists of two 4H-SiC 11-stage ring oscillators and a SiCN capacitive pressure sensor. One oscillator has the capacitive pressure sensor fixed at one node in its feedback loop and varies as a function of pressure and temperature while the other provides a pressure-independent reference frequency which can be used to temperature compensate the output of the first oscillator. A two-day repeatability test was performed up to 500C on the oscillators and the oscillator fundamental frequency changed by only 1. The SiCN capacitive pressure sensor was characterized at room temperature from 0 to 300 psi. The sensor had an initial capacitance of 3.76 pF at 0 psi and 1.75 pF at 300 psi corresponding to a 54 change in capacitance. The integrated pressure sensor system was characterized from 0 to 300 psi in steps of 50 psi over a temperature range of 25 to 500C. The pressure sensor system sensitivity was 0.113 kHzpsi at 25C and 0.026 kHzpsi at 500C.
