Since the time of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, NASA has been performing CO 2 washout verification of spacesuits with Human in the Loop (HITL) test methods. Classically, the only instrumentation both with the accuracy and response time necessary was that of external mass spectrometers or medical gas analyzers fed by a long capillary line from the oro-nasal region within the suit. The helmet CO 2 washout configuration including the challenges posed by variation of a suited human subject frequently created difficulty in capturing adequate breath by breath data. For example, a nasal cannula could be worn with reasonable comfort however it posed the following challenges: (1) impeded the test subject’s ability to do a proper Valsalva maneuver; (2) frequently provided a corrupted waveform with relative movement; (3) precluded the ability to evaluate the Flow Weighted Average (FWA) at subject interface. A mouthpiece could be used in lieu of a cannula but posed challenges as well: (1) created potential disturbances of the flow field; (2) precluded the test subject from speaking during usage; and (3) presented comfort issues limiting the duration of test points. These challenges made it impractical to use a mouthpiece for anything other than short lab ambient environment tests. Technology development and NASA investment have afforded new capabilities to address some of these measurements providing improved data collection and are implemented in the In-suit CO 2 Washout Test System (ICWTS) which provides suit inlet/outlet pressure, temperature, relative humidity, partial pressure of oxygen, partial pressure of CO 2 , and flow measurement coupled with the acquisition of the inspired PPCO 2 including the ability for FWA measurement. This test system, coupled with use of the In-suit Respiration Mannequin Assembly (IRMA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) combine to provide a full picture of the in-suit oro-nasal flow field and effectiveness of CO 2 washout in a spacesuit design.

Integrated Modeling has been a key component of verifying optical requirements for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) that are either impossible or impractical to verify exclusively through ground testing. Two major areas for integrated Modeling are Jitter and Thermal Distortion that require the exchanges of model performance predictions across disciplines. In both cases, distortions are impressed on optical models to evaluate the impact on boresight alignment and wave front error. In the case of Jitter, the disturbances are driven by reactions to motions most often from actuators; however, in the case of thermal distortion, the motions are driven by thermal expansion or contraction as a result of changing temperatures. This then requires a link further upstream to the thermal model, which is used to predict the thermal performance and temperature gradients and stability. The process for mapping temperatures from a thermal model to a corresponding structural model has been performed numerous times through the RST project lifecycle, with improvements in the accuracy, verification, and effort sought throughout. This paper describes some of the recent improvements to the process, including: capture of the visualization parameters, automatic generation of the mapped images for both the thermal and structural model groupings, and reduction in the effort to assemble the full set of mapped temperatures. These upgrades have greatly reduced the manual effort associated with thermal mapping and allowed for faster turn-around of Integrated Modeling predictions.
The principles of Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Hydrogen spacecraft battery models are discussed. The Ni-Cd battery model includes two phase positive electrode and its predictions are very close to actual data. But the Ni-H2 battery model predictions (without the two phase positive electrode) are unacceptable even though the model is operational. Both models run on UNIX and Macintosh computers.

The purpose of this document is to demonstrate the use of the Extended Kalman Filter as a tool for battery state estimation and the estimation of battery state of charge. The mathematical details based on the equivalent circuit model are presented followed by an electrochemical engineering model. A simplified first-order model is used to demonstrate the procedure followed by second and third-order models. Next a simplified electrochemistry model is presented along with observer development. State observability is calculated for the simpler equivalent circuit models and the simplified electrochemistry model. An outline of the battery model parameter identification method is presented, and model performance based on experimental and flight data is demonstrated.

A previously derived failure model for battery lifetime is discussed in terms of growth rate of the flaw, distribution of flaw sizes, and number of flaws. Equations are presented for determining the failure model for a nickel cadmium battery.
The Aeolus-Earth Mission (DWTS-Helio) is a recently selected NASA Heliophysics investigation that will apply the innovative Doppler Wind Temperature Sounder (DWTS) technique to the Space Atmosphere Interaction Region (SAIR) at ~105-180 km. The technique, invented by Gordley & Marshall (2011), applies the Doppler Scanning with Gas Filter (DSGF) technique using a cryo-cooled MWIR radiometer to view the limb of the atmosphere from LEO (orbital velocity creates the Doppler shifts required by the technique). For this implementation of DWTS, a Nitric Oxide (NO) low pressure gas cell is used. The limb of the atmosphere is observed from a spacecraft at orbital velocity, and as an observed air volume passes through the field of view, this velocity creates a set of Doppler-shifted images. These images are used to create Doppler Integrated Pass (DIP) signals, from which atmospheric temperature and wind profiles are extracted (it may be considered a converse of the successful in-flight calibration of gas cells used for the HALOE instrument). The technique is relative, removing the need for absolute radiances, and the signal-to-noise ratio for this technique is high, resulting in good measurement precision. Different gas cells can be used to create different altitude coverage and may be combined to measure a more continuous altitude range. For example, using a NO cell captures the lower atmosphere from 30-50km as well as the SAIR, while using the 13 isotopologue of CO2 would capture 50-120km. Due to the desired data volume as well as power and thermal considerations, this initial Aeolus-Earth flight will be more suited for a ‘hosted’ payload on an Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle platform instead of the ‘free-flyer’ option originally investigated. Lastly, the technique is sufficiently powerful that a two-channel system could produce full Mars atmosphere data not currently possible.
