Services provided in support of the planetary quarantine requirements

Tests were conducted to determine the dry heat resistance at 125 C of a naturally occurring bacterial spore population in a mixture of sieved vacuum cleaner dusts from Cape Kennedy. The dust was aerosolized in a special chamber and was allowed to settle on 32 Teflon ribbons to provide approximately 500,000 spores per ribbon.

Geological questions and significant results provided by early ERTS-1 data

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The organization for evaluating the uses of Earth Resources Technology Satellite data of the United States and foreign areas is described. The implementation of a system to disseminate the data to the geographical areas of interest is discussed. Brief descriptions are included of data received for the following areas: (1) east coast, (2) central United States, (3) western mountain areas, (4) west coast areas, and (5) Alaska. It is concluded that the multiband approach is useful with each of the bands providing unique and useful information. The difficulties in handling the data if all seven bands are used are examined.

Glass encapsulation provides extra protection for IC semiconductor devices

Oxide-passivated semiconductor chip is given protective glass coating by means of vapor deposition over metallic substrate of integrated circuit (IC). Method provides more reliable oxide-passivation and hermetic sealing in current use. Chips and scratches incurred during dicing, testing, and assembly are markedly reduced.

New standoffs provide high-reliability component mounting for printed wiring boards

Designs provide such advantages as inspectable solder joints from both sides of boards; stress relief in lead wires; low-impedance thermal paths; matched coefficients of lead wire thermal expansion; minimum webbing of conformal coatings to lead wires; positive mounting of part bodies to boards; and conductive mass for transient heat sink requirements.

Imaging radars provide terrain texture and roughness parameters in semi-arid environments

Geoscience potentialities and limitations of available imaging radars are examined for alluvial valley-playa terrain environments. In such arid environments, a dual-sensor combination of an imaging radar with aerial photography is shown to provide a practical method for monitoring gross changes in surface textures of alluvial fans and playa surface conditions. It also appears feasible to infer surface materials and relative surface roughness with an improved degree of interpretive reliability.

Simple computer method provides contours for radiological images

Computer is provided with information concerning boundaries in total image. Gradient of each point in digitized image is calculated with aid of threshold technique; then there is invoked set of algorithms designed to reduce number of gradient elements and to retain only major ones for definition of contour.

Rotor burst protection program: Experimentation to provide guidelines for the design of turbine rotor burst fragment containment rings

Empirical guidelines for the design of minimum weight turbine rotor disk fragment containment rings made from a monolithic metal were generated by experimentally establishing the relationship between a variable that provides a measure of containment ring capability and several other variables that both characterized the configurational aspects of the rotor fragments and containment ring, and had been found from exploratory testing to have had significant influence on the containment process. Test methodology and data analysis techniques are described. Results are presented in graphs and tables.

Use of remote sensing technology provided by the NASA/WFC Chesapeake Bay Ecological Program

Use of remote sensing technology provided through the NASA/Wallops Chesapeake Bay Ecological Program was investigated by means of extensive interviews with users. Since the inception of the Program four years ago, the technology has been used in 136 different managerial projects. Sixty-five regional managerial agencies took part in projects that the authors categorized as socioeconomic, political/managerial, monetary, legal, and other. Remote sensing technology was considered successful in 88.6 percent of the completed projects and unsuccessful in 2.8 percent.

Potential SSME modifications to provide extended capabilities for future applications

Expendable launch vehicles will be phased out during the first years of shuttle operation and the payloads currently carried to orbit by these vehicles will be placed in low earth orbit by the reusable shuttle. In connection with limitations regarding the weight of the payload which can be launched by the Space Shuttle in its present form, approaches have been considered for increasing the payload capability of the Shuttle. Propulsion systems for Shuttle derived vehicles with larger payload capabilities have been studied. Such systems can potentially be obtained from modifications of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). Concepts based on modifications to the basic engine include an SSME-35 for low altitude operation with liquid rocket boosters and an SSME-150 for operation over the complete altitude range as might be required in a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle application. Another modification would provide operation with a hydrocarbon fuel instead of hydrogen.

Seat cushion to provide realistic acceleration cues to aircraft simulator pilot

Seat cushions, each including an air cell with a non-compressible surface, are disclosed. The apparatus are provided for initially controlling the air pressure in the air cells to allow the two main support areas of the simulator pilot to touch the non-compressible surface and thus begin to compress the flesh near these areas. During a simulated flight the apparatus control the air pressure in the cells to simulate the events that occur in a seat cushion during actual flight.

Observable solar features which provide clues to the state of the solar dynamo

Space experiments are suggested to better monitor the solar dynamo and solar luminosity variations. Polar and other magnetic fields, sunspots, coronal holes, filaments and other observable solar and solar wind phenomena can provide us with important links to test and discover physical mechanisms which relate solar activity to terrestrial weather, climate, and possibly population variations.

Designing community surveys to provide a basis for noise policy

After examining reports from a large number of social surveys, two areas were identified where methodological improvements in the surveys would be especially useful for public policy. The two study areas are: the definition of noise indexes and the assessment of noise impact. Improvements in the designs of surveys are recommended which would increase the validity and reliability of the noise indexes. Changes in interview questions and sample designs are proposed which would enable surveys to provide measures of noise impact which are directly relevant for public policy.
