Phase-change Tunable Filters (PCTFs) for Hyperspectral Thermal Imaging

In this presentation, we introduce phase-change tunable filters (PCTFs), which are capable of actively tunable spectral filtering as well as continuous tuning (hyperspectral) across multiple IR wavebands (1–10 μm); several orders-of-magnitude faster switching speeds (GHz–MHz) than the state-of-the-art, and narrowband filtering (~50 nm passband). This technology subsystem is based on the unique electro-optics of non-volatile, phase-change materials (PCMs) such as GeSbTe and SbS. PCMs exhibit a large, reversible refractive index shift through applied energetic pulses. By integrating PCMs with established optical filter designs—whose optical properties are strongly dependent on the constituent materials’ refractive indices—we can rapidly and reversibly tune the PCTFs center wavelength (passband).

Vorago RH-OBC-1 Single Event Effect Characterization Test Report

The Vorago Technologies RH-OBC-1 is a CubeSat Kit Bus compatible single board computer with a Vorago VA10820 ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller at its core. The board also includes a set of common peripheral integrated circuits, like voltage regulators, non-volatile memories (NVM), an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a watchdog/supervisor, and a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus transceiver. High-energy proton (200 MeV) testing was conducted at both board and component levels to investigate single-event effects.

Low NOx Fuel-Flex Combustor Summary

Combustion and emissions testing of United Technologies Research Center’s (UTRC’s) small core combustor in NASA GRC’s CE-5 flametube test facility comprising of LTO and cruise conditions has been completed. Sufficient NOx emissions data was collected to formulate correlation equations for assessing reductions in NOx for LTO against CAEP/6 and cruise against 2005 best-in-class. Back-to-back testing of Jet-A fuel and a 50/50 blend of Jet-A with an alternative fuel demonstrated a measurable effect of fuel composition on non-volatile particulate matter emissions. Post-test analysis indicates LTO NOx emissions >80% below CAEP6 in UTRC single-sector tests of small-core N+3 combustor. Documentation describing N+3 combustor concept selected, design approach, initial flametube test & analysis results; and preferred concept recommended for higher fidelity research has also been completed. This Lean Burn combustor concept shows potential to meet/exceed NASA’s Far Term LTO NOX reduction goals, but further investigation of dynamic characteristics of the combustor concept are required to ensure good operability over the entire flight regime conditions.

Design Considerations for Practical Li-S Batteries for Electric Aviation

The development of high-energy, high-safety, and high-power batteries beyond electric automotive standards is critical for future electric aviation applications. Non-volatile solid-state electrolytes (SSE) offer many promising advantages over traditional flammable liquid electrolytes. Solid-state electrolytes may be an enabling technology for certain battery chemistries by preventing detrimental interactions with liquid electrolytes, for example prevention of the dissolution of intermediates in lithium-sulfur common in traditional liquid organic solvents. However, significant manufacturing challenges must be overcome before the adoption of such technology. This research was conducted to identify processing techniques for producing solid-state battery components with practical dimensions and weights for enabling high specific energy cells. Traditional research has identified a range of very high theoretical ionic conductivities but are impractical due to their instability or inability to be manufactured. Electrolytes explored in this study were produced as sulfide-polymer composites with densified thicknesses below 40 micron using a tape-casting technique and thermoplastic elastomer binder. The combination of high chemical compatibility and flexibility produced robust films that had moderate impact on the ionic conductivity but was capable of dramatically reducing the parasitic mass. Despite minimal conductivity losses, films were produced 10-15 times thinner than comparable bulk powder electrolytes thus leading to overall lower film resistance. Conductivity is maintained above 0.2mS/cm for composite electrolytes. Through the analysis of materials based on their physical properties, such as density, practical cells can be designed. Based on this, low density sulfide-solid-state electrolytes are a promising candidate for achieving the energy and safety metrics for electric aviation, however, further optimization of cathode microstructure and composite processing will be required to achieve the high power metrics and will be the focus of further studies. Additionally, fabrication challenges arise when utilizing metallic lithium foil, due to its soft nature, as overflow and mechanical short circuit can occur on assembly which remains a challenge to overcome before metallic lithium anodes can be fully realized.

Interlayer Exciton Polarons in Mesoscopic V 2 O 5 for Broadband Optoelectronic Synapses

Persistent photoconductivity and optoelectronic synaptic behavior are demonstrated in solution-processed mesoscopic α-phase vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) thin films. First-principles simulations coupled with the two-site Holstein polaron hopping model show that vacancies at the terminal oxygen position lead to long recombination times because photoexcited electrons and holes reside on different layers separated by the van der Waals gap, forming a weakly coupled interlayer exciton polaron. Mid-gap polaronic states also significantly broaden the photoresponse of the films to span across visible and infrared wavelengths. By controlling the amplitude/intensity, duration, and/or number of optical pulses, tunable optoelectronic memory functions, such as short-term and long-term plasticity, are experimentally established in V 2 O 5 -based optoelectronic synapses. Furthermore, device fabrication was extended to mechanically flexible ultrathin glass substrates. Flexible optoelectronic synapses maintained high performance after 150 bending cycles.

The Effect of Integration of Strontium-Bismuth-Tantalate Capacitors onto SOI Wafers

We report for the first time the successful integration of Strontium-Bismuth-Tantalate ferroelectric capacitors on an SOI Substrate. We have verified that the unique processing requirements of SBT capacitors does not affect the properties of the surrounding FD-SOI transistors, and, conversely, we have verified that the SOI processing does not affect the quality of the SBT capacitors.

Single-Event Effect Performance of a Conductive-Bridge Memory EEPROM

We investigated the heavy ion SEE characteristics of an EEPROM based on CBRAM technology. SEFI is the dominant type of SEE for each operating mode (standby, read-only, write/read). We also observed single bit upsets in the CBRAM cell, during write/read tests. the SEULET threshold is between 10 and 20 MeV * sq cm/mg, with an upper fluence limit of 3 × 10(exp 6) cm(exp -2) at 10 MeV * sq cm/mg. In the stand by mode, the CBRAM array appears immune to bit upsets.

One Time Programmable Antifuse Memory Based on Bulk Junctionless Transistor

One time programmable (OTP) antifuse base memory is demonstrated based on a bulk junctionless gate-all-around (GAA) nanowire transistor technology. The presented memory consists of a single transistor (1T) footprint without any process modification. The source/drain (S/D) and gate respectively become bit line and word line where the antifuse is formed by oxide breakdown across the gate and the channel. The channel is connected directly to the bit line due to junctionless S/D and inherently isolated from the neighboring cell by the GAA channel. Therefore, an array of 1T antifuse OTP can be a candidate for the sub-5-nanometer technology node.
