Magnetic‐Field‐Switchable Laser via Optical Pumping of Rubrene

Abstract Volumetric optical imaging of magnetic fields is challenging with existing magneto‐optical materials, motivating the search for dyes with strong magnetic field interactions, distinct emission spectra, and an ability to withstand high photon flux and incorporation within samples. Here, the magnetic field effect on singlet‐exciton fission is exploited to demonstrate spatial imaging of magnetic fields in a thin film of rubrene. Doping rubrene with the high‐quantum yield dye dibenzotetraphenylperiflanthene (DBP) is shown to enable optically pumped, slab waveguide lasing. This laser is magnetic‐field‐switchable: when operated just below the lasing threshold, application of a 0.4 T magnetic field switches the device between nonlasing and lasing modes, accompanied by an intensity modulation of +360%. This is thought to be the first demonstration of a magnetically switchable laser, as well as the largest magnetically induced change in emission brightness in a singlet‐fission material to date. These results demonstrate that singlet‐fission materials are promising materials for magnetic sensing applications and could inspire a new class of magneto‐optical modulators.

Origin of high optical contrast in zinc-zinc oxide electrodeposits for dynamic windows

The control of solar light and heat emission through windows is an important strategy for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. Reversible Zn electrodeposition has recently emerged as a promising method for constructing electronically tintable robust dynamic windows. In Zn electrodeposits formed from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolytes during device tinting, we observe extraordinary absorption that is in excess of what is predicted by the Beer-Lambert law for a uniform Zn thin film. Here, the charge required to electroplate these films is abnormally low, significantly less than previously reported dynamic windows based on reversible metal electrodeposition, which facilitates the construction of large-area devices that switch uniformly. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations are used to investigate the origin of this enhanced absorption, which arises from plasmonic effects among the Zn nanoparticles and ZnO dendrites in the film. The dielectric ZnO dendrites promote absorption via slit-like Zn-dielectric-Zn structures that from hybrid surface plasmon resonance at metal walls. Through these investigations, we provide design principles to construct low-charge and high-contrast metal and metal oxide-based dynamic windows.

Vacuum system design, construction, and operation for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source upgrade

During the summer and fall 2018, the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), underwent an upgrade that recast the facility as primarily a low emittance X-ray source. The upgrade replaced one sixth of the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) with six double-bend achromats, featuring four novel CHESS Compact Undulator (CCU) insertion devices, and switched CESR to single particle beam operation. At the time of this writing, the upgraded storage ring has achieved the CHESS-U design goal of operating with 200 mA of positron current at 6.0 GeV beam energy. Additionally, seven out of eleven CHESS-U beamlines are currently in X-ray user operation. The construction and the commissioning of the new section of the CESR accelerator required novel solutions to design, fabrication, and vacuum system operations. Significant design considerations and efforts were made to minimize X-ray ‘dark-time’, returning to operation less than 1 year. This paper describes the important milestones of the process, the solutions implemented, and the present status of CHESS-U.

Visualization and quantum control of light-accelerated condensates by terahertz multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy

Abstract Characterizing and controlling high-order correlation of quantum systems is key for developing quantum devices and switching technologies. Although conventional static and ultrafast spectroscopy gives access to collective excitations characterizing quantum states, more exotic correlations cannot be easily separated from other contributions. Here we develop density matrix simulations to show that seventh-order-wave-mixing peaks with distinct temperature and field dependences in two-dimensional terahertz nonlinear spectra reveal light-induced correlations in non-equilibrium superconducting states. Above critical terahertz driving, these emerging peaks split from conventional peaks along the second axis introduced by pump-probe relative phase in two-dimensional frequency space. They are photo-generated by correlations between two-photon fluctuations and interacting quasi-particle and quasi-particle/Higgs superconductor excitations. By photo-inducing persistent symmetry breaking via light-wave propagation, we also demonstrate seventh-order-wave-mixing sensing of Higgs collective modes. Our theory suggests to use multi-dimensional spectroscopy for quantum sensing of light-driven superconductivity and paves a path for quantum operations by few-cycle-THz-periodic photocurrent modulation.

Programmable hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals semiconductors

Lighting a route for hyperbolic dispersion The propagation of light within a material is usually well defined, with the propagation described by scattering and dispersion. In artificially designed metamaterials and in anisotropic layered materials, the dispersion can be hyperbolic, giving rise to subwavelength confinement of the light. Sternbach et al. show that the hyperbolic dispersion can be optically switched on and off on demand in the layered transition metal dichalcogenide tungsten diselenide (see the Perspective by Deng and Chen). Illuminating the material with ultrafast pulses of sub-bandgap light creates a transient waveguide, resulting in hyperbolic dispersion in the material. The ability to tune the dispersion characteristics on demand using optical pumping is an effective approach for developing ultrafast switching photonic devices and controlling the propagation of light on the nanoscale. Virtualizing Industrial Control Networks for Cyber Resilience Experiments

Industrial control systems (ICS) networks are undergoing constant shifts to accommodate new security measures. It is challenging to test varying network configurations and security tools with physical systems as they typically include large, expensive equipment. Not only this, but researchers often do not have access to this type of equipment for development of new security tools and techniques. As a solution to these issues, this work presents a set of tools for utilizing GNS3 and Docker as a virtual ICS network. Additionally, the virtual network can be attached to physical devices including network switches, hardware simulations, and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Two case studies showcase a relatively complex automatically generated network and an attack on a simple ICS network with an example mitigation.

Modeling Communication Infrastructures of Cyber Physical Systems

This effort explores modeling cyber infrastructure, including communication devices like switches, routers, sensors, and controllers, and physical media attributes like propagation of radio signals, in coordination with power distribution system model layouts. To do this, the project studies real-world configurations to define axioms of how different communication media is deployed with control equipment. These axioms will be used to develop tools to generate realistic cyber infrastructure models from starting power system models. This effort leverages and builds on the co-simulation platform developed by the other RD2C projects. The axioms and tools will be validated and demonstrated with the NS3 simulation tool as part of a co-simulation to show the behavior/impacts of cyber infrastructure on control operations.

Electrical safety for high voltage arrays

A number of key electrical safety requirements for the high voltage arrays of central station photovoltaic power systems are explored. The suitability of representative industrial DC power switchgear for control and fault protection was evaluated. Included were AC/DC circuit breakers, electromechanical contactors and relays, load interruptors, cold disconnect devices, sectionalizing switches, and high voltage DC fuses. As appropriate, steady state and transient characteristics were analyzed. Failure modes impacting upon operation and maintenance safety were also identified, as were the voltage withstand and current interruption levels.

Test of IR arrays on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory, which is a C-141 transport aircraft equipped with a 90-cm, all-reflective altazimuth telescope, has been engaged in the Kuiper Infrared Technology Experiment. Attention is presently given to the Experiment's flight series for state-of-the-art two-dimensional, 500-element arrays that use either blocked impurity band or bulk silicon devices. The switched FET readout scheme used on the three arrays flown thus far yields exceptionally low crosstalk. System sensitivities are found to be sufficient for the detection of both pointlike and extended sources; several of each type have been used in staring and scanning experiments.

Current-induced switching of thin film α - Fe 2 O 3 devices imaged using a scanning single-spin microscope

Electrical switching of Néel order in an antiferromagnetic insulator is desirable as a basis for memory applications. Unlike electrically driven switching of ferromagnetic order via spin-orbit torques, electrical switching of antiferromagnetic order remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the low-field magnetic properties of 30-nm-thick, c-axis-oriented α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 Hall devices using a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center scanning microscope. Using the canted moment of α-Fe 2⁢ O 3 as a magnetic handle on its Néel vector, we apply a saturating in-plane magnetic field to create a known initial state before letting the state relax in low field for magnetic imaging. Here, we repeat this procedure for different in-plane orientations of the initialization field. We find that the magnetic field images are characterized by stronger magnetic textures for fields along [$\overline{11}$20] and 11$\overline{2}$0, suggesting that despite the expected 3-fold magnetocrystalline anisotropy, our α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 thin films have an overall in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. We also study current-induced switching of the magnetic order in α-Fe 2 ⁢O 3 . We find that the fraction of the device that switches depends on the current pulse duration, amplitude, and direction relative to the initialization field.

Wide bandgap optical switch circuit breaker for controlling propagation of current therethrough a wide bandgap optical device

A high-voltage switch is adapted for use as a medium-voltage direct current circuit breaker, which provides a low-cost, small-footprint device to mitigate system faults. In one example, a method for operating a wideband optical device includes illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with a light within a first range of wavelengths and a first average intensity, allowing a current to propagate therethrough without substantial absorption of the current, illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with light within the first range of wavelengths and a second average intensity that is lower than the first average intensity to allow a sustained current flow though the wide bandgap optical device, and illuminating the wide bandgap optical device with light within a second range of wavelengths to stop or substantially restrict propagation of the current through the wide gap material.

Three-dimensional co-axial linear photonic switch

Techniques, systems, and devices are disclosed that relate to coaxial photoconductive switch modules. The coaxial photoconductive switch may include an outer conductor, an inner conductor, and a photoconductive material positioned between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. The inner conductor, the outer conductor, and the photoconductive material have a predetermined height. A bias voltage may be applied between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. When light of a predetermined wavelength and a predetermined intensity is incident on the photoconductive material, the photoconductive material may break down allowing a current to flow through the photoconductive material between the inner conductor and the outer conductor.
