Markovnikov alcohols via epoxide hydroboration by molecular alkali metal catalysts

Synthesis of branched “Markovnikov” alcohols is crucial to various chemical industries. The catalytic reduction of substituted epoxides under mild conditions is a highly attractive method for preparing such alcohols. Classical methods based on heterogeneous or homogeneous transition metal-catalyzed hydrogenation, hydroboration, or hydrosilylation usually suffer from poor selectivity, reverse regioselectivity, limited functional group compatibility, high cost, and/or low availability of the catalysts. Here we report the discovery of highly regioselective hydroboration of nonsymmetrical epoxides catalyzed by ligated archetypal reductants in organic chemistry – alkali metal triethylborohydrides. The chemoselectivity and turnover efficiencies of the present catalytic approach are excellent. Thus, terminal and internal epoxides with ene, yne, aryl, and halo groups were selectively and quantitatively reduced under a substrate-to-catalyst ratio (S/C) of up to 1000. Mechanistic investigations point to a mechanism reminiscent of frustrated Lewis pair action on substrates in which a nucleophile and Lewis acid act cooperatively on the substrate.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Metal–Catechol Complexes as a New Synthesis Route to the High-Quality Ternary Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanodes

A new electrochemical, solution-based synthesis method to prepare uniform multinary oxide photoelectrodes was developed. This method involves solubilizing multiple metal ions as metal-catechol complexes in a pH condition where they are otherwise insoluble. When some of the catechol ligands are electrochemically oxidized, the remaining metal complexes become insoluble and are deposited as metal-catechol films on the working electrode. The resulting films are then annealed to form crystalline multinary oxide electrodes. Since catechol can serve as a complexing agent for a variety of metal ions, the newly developed method can be used to prepare a variety of multinary oxide films. In the present study, we used this method to prepare n-type Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanodes and investigated their photoelectrochemical properties for use in a photoelectrochemical water splitting cell. We also performed a computational investigation with two goals. The first goal was to investigate small electron polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 . Charge transport in most oxide photoelectrodes involves small polaron hopping, but small polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 has not been examined prior to this work. The second goal was to investigate the effect of substitutional Sn doping at the Fe site on the electronic band structure and the carrier concentration of Fe 2 TiO 5 . Here, the combined experimental and theoretical results presented in this study greatly improve our understanding of Fe 2 TiO 5 for use as a photoanode.

Site-specific plan-view (S)TEM sample preparation from thin films using a dual-beam FIB-SEM

To fully evaluate the atomic structure, and associated properties of materials using transmission electron microscopy, examination of samples from three non-collinear orientations is needed. This is particularly challenging for thin films and nanoscale devices built on substrates due to limitations with plan-view sample preparation. In this work, a new method for preparation of high-quality, site-specific, plan-view TEM samples from thin-films grown on substrates, is presented and discussed. Here, it is based on using a dual-beam focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) system. To demonstrate the method, the samples were prepared from thin films of perovskite oxide BaSnO 3 grown on a SrTiO 3 substrate and metal oxide IrO 2 on a TiO 2 substrate, ranging from 20–80 nm in thicknesses using molecular beam epitaxy. While the method is optimized for the thin films, it can be extended to other site-specific plan-view samples and devices build on wafers. Aberration-corrected STEM was used to evaluate the quality of the samples and their applicability for atomic-resolution imaging and analysis.

Nickel Speciation and Methane Dry Reforming Performance of Ni/Ce x Zr 1-x O 2 Prepared by Different Synthesis Methods

Herein, ceria–zirconia-supported Ni catalysts (Ni/Ce 0.83 Zr 0.17 O 2 or Ni/CZ) are prepared by dry impregnation, strong electrostatic adsorption, coprecipitation (CP), and combustion synthesis (CS). The nature and abundance of Ni species in these samples are characterized by X-ray adsorption spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, and CO chemisorption. The bulk synthesis methods (i.e., CP and CS) produce Ni cations that are incorporated into the CZ lattice forming mixed-metal oxides with Ni 3+ species at low Ni content. The formation of mixed-metal oxides increases the reducibility of CZ and increases the abundance of active surface oxygen. All NiO/CZ catalysts are active for methane dry reforming and retain some of their activity at a steady state. The initial methane conversion correlates linearly with the fraction of accessible Ni after reduction. The predominant path of catalyst deactivation strongly depends on the structure of the catalyst and, thus, on the synthesis method used. All catalysts experience agglomeration of Ni particles under reaction conditions. Improving the Ni dispersion to isolated species embedded in a support does not improve resistance to Ni particle growth. Coke formation is inversely related to the concentration of active surface oxygen. The dominant deactivation mechanism for catalysts made by CS is the encapsulation of Ni particles by the support.

Integrative Multi-PTM Proteomics Reveals Dynamic Global, Redox, Phosphorylation, and Acetylation Regulation in Cytokine-treated Pancreatic Beta Cells

Studying regulation of protein function at a systems level necessitates an understanding of the interplay among diverse post-translational modifications (PTMs). A variety of proteomics sample processing workflows are currently used to study specific PTMs but rarely characterize multiple types of PTMs from the same sample inputs. Method incompatibilities and laborious sample preparation steps complicate large-scale physiological investigations and can lead to variations in results. The single-pot, solid-phase-enhanced sample preparation (SP3) method for sample cleanup is compatible with different lysis buffers and amenable to automation, making it attractive for high-throughput multi-PTM profiling. Herein, we describe an integrative SP3 workflow for multiplexed quantification of protein abundance, cysteine thiol oxidation, phosphorylation, and acetylation. The broad applicability of this approach is demonstrated using cell and tissue samples, and its utility for studying interacting regulatory networks is highlighted in a time-course experiment of cytokine-treated ß-cells. We observed a swift response in global regulation of protein abundances consistent with rapid activation of JAK-STAT and NF-?B signaling pathways. Regulators of these pathways as well as proteins involved in their target processes displayed multi-PTM dynamics indicative of a complex cellular response stages: acute, adaptation, and chronic (prolonged stress). PARP14, a negative regulator of JAK-STAT, had multiple co-localized PTMs that may be involved in intraprotein regulatory crosstalk. Our workflow provides a high-throughput platform that can profile multi-PTMomes from the same sample set, which is valuable in unraveling the functional roles of PTMs and their co-regulation.

Structure and tunable temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys prepared by induction melting method

The magnetization of most magnetic materials decreases monotonically with increasing temperature. In this work, we found that the temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys can be tuned from negative values to positive values by controlling the composition x. The antiperovskite type Mn 4-x Ga x C (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.75) alloys were prepared by using induction melting method, which is more efficient in large-scale production and obtaining full-density alloys in comparison with the traditional solid-state-reaction method. The values of the temperature coefficient of magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C change continuously from negative to positive with decreasing x. The Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys with highly thermal-stable magnetization is expected to present in the composition range of 0.15 < x < 0.25. The saturation magnetization of Mn 4-x Ga x C increases with increasing x, owing to the reduced number of antiferromagnetically coupled Mn atoms at the cubic corner with the face centered Mn atoms. Most Mn 4-x Ga x C alloys with varying x display near-zero remanent magnetization and coercivity at room temperature. The Currie temperature of Mn 4-x Ga x C decreases with increasing x. The x-ray photoelectron spectra of Mn 2p, Ga 2p, and C 1 s reveal distinct splitting due to the diverse chemical states of these atoms at different lattice positions and/or phases. Our work has developed a class of alloys capable of offering a desired temperature coefficient of magnetization across a broad temperature range, thereby offering a method to manipulate the thermodynamics of magnetization.

Intermetallic Nanocatalysts from Heterobimetallic Group 10–14 Pyridine-2-thiolate Precursors

Intermetallic compounds are atomically ordered inorganic materials containing two or more transition metals and main-group elements in unique crystal structures. Intermetallics based on group 10 and group 14 metals have shown enhanced activity, selectivity, and durability in comparison to simple metals and alloys in many catalytic reactions. While high-temperature solid-state methods to prepare intermetallic compounds exist, softer synthetic methods can provide key advantages, such as enabling the preparation of metastable phases or of smaller particles with increased surface areas for catalysis. In this work, we study a generalized family of heterobimetallic precursors to binary intermetallics, each containing a group 10 metal and a group 14 tetrel bonded together and supported by pincer-like pyridine-2-thiolate ligands. Upon thermal decomposition, these heterobimetallic complexes form 10–14 binary intermetallic nanocrystals. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) computations help in better understanding the reactivity of these precursors toward the synthesis of specific intermetallic binary phases. Using Pd 2 Sn as an example, we demonstrate that nanoparticles made in this way can act as uniquely selective catalysts for the reduction of nitroarenes to azoxyarenes, which highlights the utility of the intermetallics made by our method. Employing heterobimetallic pincer complexes as precursors toward binary nanocrystals and other metal-rich intermetallics provides opportunities to explore the fundamental chemistry and applications of these materials.
