Six-beam models in radiative transfer theory

A critical analysis is given of the applicability of six-beam models to radiative transfer in particulate materials. The method of introducing transverse scattering in these models is shown to cause fundamental difficulties in the case of physically plausible phase functions; in particular, the effective absorptivity is abnormally large and thus results in incorrect reflectances and transmittances. Six-beam calculations for several media are compared with accurate solutions, with Chu-Churchill two-beam results, and with a simple modification to the Eddington approximation, the last being generally superior over a wide range of conditions.

Operator product expansion for radial lattice quantization of 3D ϕ 4 theory

At its critical point, the three-dimensional lattice Ising model is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), the 3D Ising CFT. Instead of carrying out simulations on Euclidean lattices, we use the quantum finite elements method to implement radially quantized critical ϕ 4 theory on simplicial lattices approaching R × S 2 . Computing the four-point function of identical scalars, we demonstrate the power of radial quantization by the accurate determination of the scaling dimensions Δ ε and Δ T as well as ratios of the operator product expansion coefficients f σ σ ε and f σ σ T of the first spin-0 and spin-2 primary operators ε and T of the 3D Ising CFT. Symmetric Mass Generation with Four SU(2) Doublet Fermions

We study a single exactly massless staggered fermion in the fundamental representation of an SU(2) gauge group. We utilize an nHYP-smeared fermion action supplemented with additional heavy Pauli-Villars fields that serve to decrease lattice artifacts. The phase diagram exhibits a clear two-phase structure with a conformal phase at weak coupling and a novel new phase, the symmetric mass generation (SMG) phase, appearing at strong coupling. The SMG phase is confining with all states gapped and chiral symmetry unbroken. Our finite size scaling analysis provides strong evidence that the phase transition between these two phases is continuous, which would allow for the existence of a continuum SMG phase. Furthermore, the renormalization group flows are consistent with a 𝛽 function that vanishes quadratically at the new fixed point, suggesting that the 𝑁 𝑓 = 4 flavor SU(2) gauge theory lies at the opening of the conformal window.

Grain size reduction in granular flows of spheres - The effects of critical impact energy

Methods employed to derive recent kinetic theories for rapid noncomminuting granular flows are extended to homogeneous flows in which a fraction of the repeated collisions produce tiny fractures on the particles' peripheries and gradually reduce their effective diameters. The theory consists of balance equations for mass, momentum, and energy, as well as constitutive relations for the presence tensor and collisional rates of mass and energy lost. The work of Richman and Chou (1989) is improved by incorporating into the constitutive theory the critical impact energy below which no mass loss occurs in a binary collision. The theory is applied to granular shear flows and, for fixed shear rates, predicts the time variations of the solid fraction granular temperature, and induced stresses, as well as their extreme sensitivities to small changes in the critical impact energy.

Critical Role of the Public Theory & Modeling Program for Commercial Fusion Energy

This white paper contributes input from the Executive Committee of the Theory Coordinating Committee to the 2024 FESAC Decadal Plan Subcommittee. It is argued that the public Theory and Modeling program plays a critical role in the pursuit of commercial fusion energy. A new mechanism for fostering engagement between the fusion industry and the public Theory and Modeling program could provide better alignment between the goals of the public program and the needs of private industry.

The topology and vorticity dynamics of a three-dimensional plane compressible wake

The three-dimensional aspects of transition in a low Mach number plane compressible wake are studied numerically. Comparisons are made between the topology of the velocity field and the vorticity dynamics of the flow based on results from direct numerical simulations of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The velocity field is integrated to obtain instantaneous streamlines at different stages in the evolution. A generalized three-dimensional critical point theory is applied to classify the critical points of the velocity field.

Concepts and methods for describing critical phenomena in fluids

The predictions of theoretical models for a critical-point phase transistion in fluids, namely the classical equation with third-degree critical isotherm, that with fifth-degree critical isotherm, and the lattice gas, are reviewed. The renormalization group theory of critical phenomena and the hypothesis of universality of critical behavior supported by this theory are discussed as well as the nature of gravity effects and how they affect cricital-region experimentation in fluids. The behavior of the thermodynamic properties and the correlation function is formulated in terms of scaling laws. The predictions of these scaling laws and of the hypothesis of universality of critical behavior are compared with experimental data for one-component fluids and it is indicated how the methods can be extended to describe critical phenomena in fluid mixtures.

Recent observations of cosmic ray antiprotons and a critical assessment of the theories of their origin

The models proposed to explain the observed spectrum of cosmic ray antiprotons are reexamined in light of recent results from balloon-borne experiments. It is found that the prediction of modified closed galaxy model fits the observed data very well. Models in which secondary antiprotons are produced in the sources, could be made consistent with the data provided the secondary particles do not suffer considerable adiabatic deceleration. It has been shown that there cannot be any significant contribution to the observed antiprotons, from the evaporation of mini black holes or from the annihilation of dark matter like photinos. The role of extragalactic cosmic rays has been examined critically in the context of the recent data, and they are not the source of cosmic ray antiprotons. However, determination of the energy spectrum of antiprotons at least up to a few tens of GeV would be valuable to provide information on the possible existence of supersymmetric particles and on the modulation of extragalactic cosmic rays while entering the Galaxy.

Aging Theories for Establishing Safe Life Spans of Airborne Critical Structural Components

New aging theories have been developed to establish the safe life span of airborne critical structural components such as B-52B aircraft pylon hooks for carrying air-launch drop-test vehicles. The new aging theories use the equivalent-constant-amplitude loading spectrum to represent the actual random loading spectrum with the same damaging effect. The crack growth due to random loading cycling of the first flight is calculated using the half-cycle theory, and then extrapolated to all the crack growths of the subsequent flights. The predictions of the new aging theories (finite difference aging theory and closed-form aging theory) are compared with the classical flight-test life theory and the previously developed Ko first- and Ko second-order aging theories. The new aging theories predict the number of safe flights as considerably lower than that predicted by the classical aging theory, and slightly lower than those predicted by the Ko first- and Ko second-order aging theories due to the inclusion of all the higher order terms.

Critical inclinations in satellite theory

The main problem of satellite theory is described in polar coordinates by a Hamiltonian function. It is proposed to find a solution of the Hamiltonian function with the following properties: (1) the reference orbit is Keplerian; (2) no restriction is imposed on the eccentricity; in particular, it is exempt of singularities - real or apparent - for small eccentricities; and (3) no restriction is imposed on the inclination; in particular, it is exempt of singularities - real or apparent - for small inclinations; also it is valid even in the neighborhood of inclinations at which the perigee is stationary.

The Mach number of the cosmic flow - A critical test for current theories

A new cosmological, self-contained test using the ratio of mean velocity and the velocity dispersion in the mean flow frame of a group of test objects is presented. To allow comparison with linear theory, the velocity field must first be smoothed on a suitable scale. In the context of linear perturbation theory, the Mach number M(R) which measures the ratio of power on scales larger than to scales smaller than the patch size R, is independent of the perturbation amplitude and also of bias. An apparent inconsistency is found for standard values of power-law index n = 1 and cosmological density parameter Omega = 1, when comparing values of M(R) predicted by popular models with tentative available observations. Nonstandard models based on adiabatic perturbations with either negative n or small Omega value also fail, due to creation of unacceptably large microwave background fluctuations.

Practical theories for service life prediction of critical aerospace structural components

A new second-order theory was developed for predicting the service lives of aerospace structural components. The predictions based on this new theory were compared with those based on the Ko first-order theory and the classical theory of service life predictions. The new theory gives very accurate service life predictions. An equivalent constant-amplitude stress cycle method was proposed for representing the random load spectrum for crack growth calculations. This method predicts the most conservative service life. The proposed use of minimum detectable crack size, instead of proof load established crack size as an initial crack size for crack growth calculations, could give a more realistic service life.

Aviation accidents and the theory of the situation

Social-psychological factors effecting the performance of flight crews are examined. In particular, a crew member's perceptual-psychological constructs of the flight situation (theories of the situation) are discussed. The skills and willingness of a flight crew to be alert to possible errors in the theory become critical to their effectiveness and their ability to ensure a safe flight. Several major factors that determine the likelihood that a faulty theory will be detected and revised are identified.

Behavior of hydrogen in alpha-iron at lower temperatures

Evidence is presented that the low temperature anomalies in the hydrogen occlusive behavior of alpha iron can be explained by means of a molecular occlusion theory. This theory proposes that the stable state of the absorbed hydrogen changes from atomic at high temperatures to molecular as the temperature is lowered below a critical value. Theories proposing to explain the anomalous behavior as being due to the capture, at lower temperatures, of hydrogen in traps are shown to be unacceptable.

Enhancement of the photon emission rate near the QCD critical point

We compute photon emission rate enhancement near the QCD critical point using an effective theory of dynamic critical phenomena and derive a universal photon spectrum. The emission rate scales similar to conductivity, increasing with the correlation length (𝜉), diverging at the critical point. The spectrum exhibits 𝜔⁢𝑑⁢𝑁 𝛾 /𝑑 3 ⁢𝑘 ∝ 𝜔 −1/2 in the scaling regime, with the transition occurring at a frequency comparable to shear damping rate 𝜔 ∼ 𝛾 𝜂 /𝜉 2 , reflecting the nonequilibrium properties of the near-critical liquid.
