A Handbook for Derivative Classifiers at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The Los Alamos Classification Office (within the SAFE-IP group) prepared this handbook as a resource for the Laboratory’s derivative classifiers (DCs). It contains information about United States Government (USG) classification policy, principles, and authorities as they relate to the LANL Classification Program in general, and to the LANL DC program specifically. At a working level, DCs review Laboratory documents and material that are subject to classification review requirements, while the Classification Office provides the training and resources for DCs to perform that vital function.

Optical and Electrical Properties of Reactively Sputtered TiN, ZrN, and HfN Thin Films

Thin films of titanium, zirconium, and hafnium nitride are prepared by DC magnetron reactive sputtering at room temperature on fused silica, optical glass, and silicon substrates. Deposition parameters are investigated in order to obtain stoichiometric films. The optical and electrical properties of the films as a function of nitrogen partial pressure are determined. The results show that an inverse correlation exists between the optical reflectance and the electrical resistivity of the films. Ellipsometer data for all three films show that their refractive index in the visible spectrum is decreased by increasing the film thickness while the extinction coefficient is unchanged. Thin films of TiN have the lowest room temperature resistivity relative to ZrN and HfN thin films.

Quantifying Intrinsic, Extrinsic, Dielectric, and Secondary Pyroelectric Responses in PbZr 1–x Ti x O 3 Thin Films

Applications such as solid-state waste-heat energy conversion, infrared sensing, and thermally-driven electron emission rely on pyroelectric materials (a subclass of dielectric piezoelectrics) which exhibit temperature-dependent changes in polarization. Although enhanced dielectric and piezoelectric responses are typically found at polarization instabilities such as temperature- and chemically induced phase boundaries, large pyroelectric effects have been primarily limited in study to temperature-induced phase boundaries. Here in this paper, we directly identify the magnitude and sign of the intrinsic, extrinsic, dielectric, and secondary pyroelectric contributions to the total pyroelectric response as a function of chemistry in thin films of the canonical ferroelectric PbZr$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_3$ (x = 0.40, 0.48, 0.60, and 0.80) across the morphotropic phase boundary. Using phase-sensitive frequency and applied dc-bias methods, the various pyroelectric contributions were measured. It is found that the total pyroelectric response decreases systematically as one moves from higher to lower titanium contents. This arises from a combination of decreasing intrinsic response (-232 to -97 μC m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$) and a sign inversion (+33 to -17 μC m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$)) of the extrinsic contribution upon crossing the morphotropic phase boundary. Additionally, the measured secondary and dielectric contributions span between -70 and -29 and 10-115 μC m$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$) under applied fields, respectively, following closely trends in the piezoelectric and dielectric susceptibility. These findings and methodologies provide novel insights into the understudied realm of pyroelectric response.

Reassessing the Market—Computation Interface to Enhance Grid Security and Efficiency

The goal of this project is to reconsider core market and reliability processes that can potentially yield to transformative advances in power grid security, reliability, and efficiency. Current electric power market designs are strongly a function of computing capabilities and limitations that were available in the mid-to-late 1990s, circa deregulation. This includes constructs such as: (1) a 2-tiered day-ahead/real-time market construct; and (2) linearized (“DC”) real power flow approximations in dispatch and pricing. At that time, state-of-the-art computational capabilities could at the limit address deterministic mixed-integer programming formulations of unit commitment (UC) and linear programming formulations of economic dispatch (ED) at limited fidelity and scale. Such constraints forced limited look-ahead time-horizons, crude approximations of AC power flow physics and operations, and artificial partitioning between day-ahead markets, hour(s)-ahead reliability processes, and real-time markets. Consequently, these limitations have resulted in limited security and reliability with increasing out-of-market payments, particularly as uncertainty associated with renewables and distributed energy resources grows.

Design, processing, and testing of LSI arrays for space station

Data for the beam-leaded silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) process using the TA5388 dual-complementary pair plus inverted circuit show the stability of the dc device characteristics through the complete beam-lead processing and packaging steps. A more complex circuit, the TA6567 - a silicon-gate, voltage-sense BL/CMOS/SOS 256-bit RAM, has also been made that was functionally perfect at wafer probe. Efforts to increase the yield of this circuit and to obtain electrically perfect packaged units are discussed.

Spin pumping from antiferromagnetic insulator spin-orbit-proximitized by adjacent heavy metal: a first-principles Floquet-nonequilibrium Green function study

Motivated by the recent experiment on spin pumping from sub-THz radiation-driven uniaxial antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) MnF 2 into heavy metal (HM) Pt hosting strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we compute and compare pumped spin currents in Cu/MnF 2 /Cu and Pt/MnF 2 /Cu heterostructures. Recent theories of spin pumping by AFI have relied on simplistic Hamiltonians (such as tight-binding) and the scattering approach to quantum transport yielding the so-called interfacial spin mixing conductance (SMC), but the concept of SMC ceases to be applicable when SO coupling is present directly at the interface. In contrast, we use a more general first-principles quantum transport approach which combines noncollinear density functional theory with Floquet-nonequilibrium Green's functions in order to take into account: SO-proximitized AFI as a new type of quantum material, different from isolated AFI and brought about by AFI hybridization with adjacent HM layer; strong SO coupling at the interface; and evanescent wavefunctions penetrating from Pt or Cu into AFI layer to make its interfacial region conducting rather than insulating as in the isolated AFI. The DC component of pumped spin current $I_\mathrm{DC}^{S_z}$ vs. precession cone angle $\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}}$ of the Néel vector l of AFI does not follow putative $I^{S_z}_\mathrm{DC} \propto \sin^2 \theta_{\boldsymbol{l}}$, except for very small angles $\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}} \lesssim 10^\circ$ for which we define an effective SMC from the prefactor and find that it doubles from MnF2/Cu to MnF2/Pt interface. In addition, the angular dependence $I^{S_z}_\mathrm{DC}(\theta_{\boldsymbol{l}})$ differs for opposite directions of precession of the Néel vector, leading to twice as large SMC for the right-handed than for the left-handed chirality of the precession mode.

Generation and characterization of magnetized electron beam from a DC high voltage photogun for electron beam cooling application

One of the most challenging requirements for the proposed Electron-Ion Collider is the strong cooling of the proton beam, which is key to achieving the collider’s desired luminosity of order 10 33 -10 34 cm -2 s -1 . Magnetized bunched-beam electron cooling could be a means to achieve the required high luminosity, where strong cooling is accomplished inside a cooling solenoid where the ions co-propagate with an electron beam generated from a source immersed in a magnetic field. To increase the cooling efficiency, a bunched electron beam with high bunch charge and high repetition rate is required. This work describes the production and characterization of magnetized electron beam using a compact 300 kV DC high voltage photogun and bi-alkali antimonide photocathode. Beam magnetization was studied using a diagnostic beamline that includes viewer screens for measuring the shearing angle of the electron beamlet passing through a narrow upstream slit. Simulations and corresponding measurements of beam magnetization are presented as a function of laser spot size and magnetic field strength. Correlated beam emittance with magnetic field (0–0.15 T) at the photocathode was measured for various laser spot sizes. Measurements of photocathode lifetime were carried out at different magnetized electron beam currents up to 28 mA, and bunch charge up to 0.7 nC (not simultaneously).

Primary electric propulsion for future space missions

The paper presents data and a methodology to allow preliminary definition of electric propulsion systems. The elements comprising the thrust system are described parametrically. As an example, thruster performance is presented as a function of specific impulse and propellant type. Two power management and control (PMAC) approaches are considered to illustrate the use of the methodology. Power source characteristics are disregarded in the system description. One PMAC concept assumes a dc power input to the thrust system and all thruster power conditioned in a conventional manner; the other PMAC approach assumes an ac power source.

Revised radiometric calibration technique for LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper data by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

Observations of raw image data, raw radiometric calibration data, and background measurements extracted from the raw data streams on high density tape reveal major shortcomings in a technique proposed by the Canadian Center for Remote Sensing in 1982 for the radiometric correction of TM data. Results are presented which correlate measurements of the DC background with variations in both image data background and calibration samples. The effect on both raw data and data corrected using the earlier proposed technique is explained and the correction required for these factors as a function of individual scan line number for each detector is described. How the revised technique can be incorporated into an operational environment is demonstrated.

An evaluation of HEMT potential for millimeter-wave signal sources using interpolation and harmonic balance techniques

A large-signal analysis method based on an harmonic balance technique and a 2-D cubic spline interpolation function has been developed and applied to the prediction of InP-based HEMT oscillator performance for frequencies extending up to the submillimeter-wave range. The large-signal analysis method uses a limited number of DC and small-signal S-parameter data and allows the accurate characterization of HEMT large-signal behavior. The method has been validated experimentally using load-pull measurement. Oscillation frequency, power performance, and load requirements are discussed, with an operation capability of 300 GHz predicted using state-of-the-art devices (fmax is approximately equal to 450 GHz).

Effect of a Silicone Contaminant Film on the Transmittance Properties of AR-coated Fused Silica

We present the results of a laboratory test to determine the effects of bulk deposited, DC-704 silicone contaminant film on the transmittance properties of an anti-reflective (AR) coated fused silica optical substrate. Testing and optical measurements were performed in vacuum in the Boeing Combined Effects Test Facility (CETF). The test and measurement procedures are described herein. Measurement results are presented showing the change in transmittance characteristics as a function of contaminant deposit thickness and vacuum ultra-violet (vuv) exposure levels. Measurement results show an initial degradation in the transmittance of the contaminated sample. This is followed by a partial recovery in sample transmittance as the sample is exposed to additional VUV radiation. Transmittance results also show a loss of transmission in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum and an increase in transmission in the infrared portion of the spectrum. These transmittance results are characteristic of thin-film interference effects. Thin-film analyses indicate that some of the observed transmittance results can be successfully modeled, but only if the contaminant film is assumed to be SiO2 rather than DC-704 silicone. Post-test Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) scans of the test sample indicate the formation of contaminant islands and the presence of a thin uniform coating of contaminant deposit on the sample

Revised Radiometric Calibration Technique for LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper Data by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

A technique for the radiometric correction of LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper data was proposed by the Canada Center for Remote Sensing. Subsequent detailed observations of raw image data, raw radiometric calibration data and background measurements extracted from the raw data stream on High Density Tape highlighted major shortcomings in the proposed method which if left uncorrected, can cause severe radiometric striping in the output product. Results are presented which correlate measurements of the DC background with variations in both image data background and calibration samples. The effect on both raw data and on data corrected using the earlier proposed technique is explained, and the correction required for these factors as a function of individual scan line number for each detector is described. It is shown how the revised technique can be incorporated into an operational environment.

Experimental Verification of Electric Drive Technologies Based on Artificial Intelligence Tools

In this report, a fully integrated prototype of a flight servo control system is successfully developed and implemented using brushless dc motors. The control system is developed by the fuzzy logic theory, and implemented with a multilayer neural network. First, a neural network-based architecture is introduced for fuzzy logic control. The characteristic rules and their membership functions of fuzzy systems are represented as the processing nodes in the neural network structure. The network structure and the parameter learning are performed simultaneously and online in the fuzzy-neural network system. The structure learning is based on the partition of input space. The parameter learning is based on the supervised gradient decent method, using a delta adaptation law. Using experimental setup, the performance of the proposed control system is evaluated under various operating conditions. Test results are presented and discussed in the report. The proposed learning control system has several advantages, namely, simple structure and learning capability, robustness and high tracking performance and few nodes at hidden layers. In comparison with the PI controller, the proposed fuzzy-neural network system can yield a better dynamic performance with shorter settling time, and without overshoot. Experimental results have shown that the proposed control system is adaptive and robust in responding to a wide range of operating conditions. In summary, the goal of this study is to design and implement-advanced servosystems to actuate control surfaces for flight vehicles, namely, aircraft and helicopters, missiles and interceptors, and mini- and micro-air vehicles.
