Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG)

High-resolution (30-m) urban land cover projections for Los Angeles California Urban Area: 2010 to 2100 under SSP3 and SSP5 [Updated simulations based on population-driven urban intensity transitions]

These data (v3) are updated from previous versions (1 and 2) in that they include consider the effects of population on transitions in urban land intensity. This leads to more reasonable differences in urban land projections under variant SSPs. For the present dataset, both SSP3 and SSP5 are provided. These data represent simulations of future land use and land cover (LULCC) for Los Angeles urban area (U.S. Census Bureau defined area) as raster tiff images at a 30-m pixel resolution and at decadal time steps from 2010 to 2100. LULCC classes in this product follow the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) classification. NLCD 21-24 correspond to open developed, low developed, medium developed, and high developed urban land classes, respectively. Only urban land cover classes (NLCD class 21, 22, 23, and 24) are dynamic over time; however, all NLCD classes are included in the final product. Therefore, NLCD classes that do not convert to an urban class will be similar to year 2000. The products were developed using a hybridized statistical and cellular automata approach. Linear mixed models (LMMs) were used to estimate future urban land budgets based on 1-km urban land fraction projections from Gao and Pesaresi (2021), whereas separate generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) were used to estimate shifts in urban land intensities based on retrospective shifts in NLCD urban class intensities over a 20- year period. Based on urban land allocations from the statistical models, a cellular-automata and downscaling routine was used to simulate dynamic urban land expansion at a 30-m resolution based on suitability criteria. Scenarios of future urban landcover change projections include variant solutions for the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5 (SSP5) and SSP 3 based on different population assumptions, different land use intensification assumptions, variable land zoning constraints, and iterative adjustments to correct for over allocation of urban expansion across decadal time periods from 2010 to 2100. This results in 320 raster products.

United States Data Center Energy Usage Report: 2025 Update

This report updates the 2024 Data Center Energy Usage Report (2024 Report) and estimates that data centers could account for 11.8% of total U.S. electricity by 2030. The estimate also includes a range of scenarios that indicate the energy use could be between 9.5 and 15.3% of total U.S. electricity use by 2030. In comparison, the 2024 Report estimate range was 6.7% to 12.0% of total U.S. electricity by 2028.

The updated DESGW processing pipeline for the third LIGO/VIRGO observing run

The DESGW group seeks to identify electromagnetic counterpartsof gravitational wave events seen by the LIGO-VIRGO network, such as thoseexpected from binary neutron star mergers or neutron star- black hole mergers.DESGW was active throughout the first two LIGO observing seasons, followingup several binary black hole mergers and the first binary neutron star merger,GW170817. We describe the modifications to the observing strategy generationand image processing pipeline between the second (ending in August 2017)and third (beginning in April 2019) LIGO observing seasons. The modifica-tions include a more robust observing strategy generator, further parallelizationof the image reduction software and dierence imaging processing pipeline, data transfer streamlining, and a web page listing identified counterpart candi-dates that updates in real time. Taken together, the additional parallelizationsteps enable us to identify potential electromagnetic counterparts within fullycalibrated search images in less than one hour, compared to the 3-5 hours itwould typically take during the first two seasons. These performance improve-ments are critical to the entire EM followup community, as rapid identification(or rejection) of candidates enables detailed spectroscopic followup by multipleinstruments as soon as possible, leading to more information about the environ-ment immediately following such gravitational wave events.

Annual Technology Baseline: The 2020 Electricity Update

Consistent cost and performance data for various electricity generation technologies can be difficult to find and may change frequently for certain technologies. With the Annual Technology Baseline (ATB), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory annually provides an organized and centralized set of such cost and performance data. The ATB uses the best information from the Department of Energy national laboratories' renewable energy analysts. The ATB has been reviewed by experts and it includes the following electricity generation technologies: land-based wind, offshore wind, utility-scale solar photovoltaics (PV), commercial-scale solar PV, residential-scale solar PV, concentrating solar power, geothermal power, hydropower, utility-scale battery storage. EIA data for coal, natural gas, nuclear, and conventional biopower are included for reference. This webinar presentation introduces the 2020 update to the ATB Electricity data and documentation.

Fuel Conversion Efforts at the High Flux Isotope Reactor – a 2020 Status Update

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) provides one of the world’s highest steady-state neutron fluxes in the world for neutron scattering experiments focused on impactful scientific discovery, as well as materials irradiation studies and production of medical, industrial, and research isotopes. Efforts are ongoing to convert HFIR from high-enriched uranium (HEU) to low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel while maintaining or enhancing current performance and safety margin, thus sustaining HFIR’s mission portfolio and reactor-based neutron science leadership. This paper presents a status update on the HFIR fuel conversion efforts.

Y-12 NATIONAL SECURITY COMPLEX LEU-MO FEEDSTOCK FABRICATION UPDATE

The Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) participates in the fuel fabrication pillar of lhe National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA's) Office of Material Minimization and Management (M3) Office of Conversion Pillar. Y-12's primary responsibility is to establish a reliable fabrication process of low-enriched uranium-molybdenum (LEU-Mo) feedstock tor United States High Performance Research Reactors (US HPRRs). This update compares US HPRR LEU-Mo feedstock fabrication ettorts over the past several casting campaigns at Y-12 which vary in process methodologies and fabrication parameters. With recent changes to the latest feedstock casting campaign, Process Design Standard-2 (PD-STD-2). Y-12 has seen a significant decrease in isotopic uranium variability of the fuel feedstock fabricated.

Hadronic vacuum polarization of the muon on 2+1+1-flavor HISQ ensembles: an update

We give an update on the status of the Fermilab Lattice-HPQCD-MILC calculation of the contribution to the muon's anomolous magnetic moment from the light-quark, connected hadronic vacuum polarization. We present preliminary, blinded results in the intermediate window for this contribution, $a_{\mu, \textrm{W}}^{ll}$. The calculation is performed on $N_f =2+1+1$ highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles from the MILC collaboration with physical pion mass at four lattice spacings between 0.15 fm and 0.06 fm. We also present preliminary results for a study of the two-pion contributions to the vector-current correlation function performed on the 0.15 fm ensemble where we see a factor of four improvement over traditional noise reduction techniques.
