Experimental Study of Fixed Plate Insert for Window Protection

Evidenced from experiments to date, NorthStar can expect that potentially significant changes in the target cooling passages are likely due to disk shape changes by thermal distortions or breakage. In the bulk of the target the result will be increased He flow in some channels and decreased flow in others.

Insert Modeling in UNF ST&DARDS

The Used Nuclear Fuel-Storage, Transportation & Disposal Analysis Resource and Data System (UNF-ST&DARDS) is a software tool that integrates a used nuclear fuel (UNF) or spent nuclear fuel (SNF) relational database and key analysis capabilities to simplify and automate numerous UNF management and fuel cycle–related activities. UNF-ST&DARDS is being developed for the US Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition program. UNF-ST&DARDS provides an integrated framework that uses advanced modeling and simulation to predict the behavior of SNF over the timescales associated with permanent disposal in a geologic repository. After leaving the spent fuel pool, SNF is transferred to dry storage in a dual-purpose canister (DPC). DPCs are considered “dual purpose” because they are designed for both storage and transportation, removing the need to transfer the fuel to a separate transportation cask. However, much research has been conducted investigating the feasibility of directly disposing of DPCs in geologic repositories. Direct disposal of DPCs could reduce worker exposure during repackaging, reducing the amount of low-level waste from the discarded DPCs and potentially saving billions of dollars. Therefore, direct disposal of as-loaded DPCs is desirable if it can be done safely.

Continuous Ion Separations by Insertion Processes

Humanity is reliant on many important chemical separations which are performed daily at the industrial scale. With a historical dependence on thermal distillation techniques, which require large amounts of energy, chemical separations account for 10-15% of energy consumption worldwide. Membrane-based alternatives mitigate separation energy demand, yet prove challenging to scale-up and possess intrinsic limitations. Membranes usually separate species based on size and charge exclusion mechanisms. Importantly, however, improvements in the selectivity of membranes almost always leads to lower permeability. Much of the fundamental research in the field of membrane separations is focused on breaking the scaling relationship between selectivity and permeance, and improving membrane lifetime and stability. As discussed next, our group is developing electrochemically active membranes that can be actuated by application of an electric field. The long-term goal is to control selectivity and permeance.

Carbonate-Catalyzed CO 2 Insertion into Hydrocarbon C-H Bonds (Final Technical Report)

The development of methods to utilize CO 2 as a feedstock for chemical and fuel synthesis is critical for creating renewable alternatives to fossil fuel-based products. This project investigated a class of catalyst materials known as "dispersed carbonates", which are composed of alkali carbonate salts (e.g. potassium carbonate) dispersed in porous support materials. These catalysts react with CO 2 and organic molecules to form chemicals known as carboxylates that have wide applications in the chemical industry. The project used a combination of spectroscopic and reactivity studies to provide fundamental insight into the structure and mechanism of dispersed carbonates in these reactions, leading to variants with greater reactivity. In addition, dispersed carbonates were investigated for CO 2 hydrogenation catalysis, which is critical for processes under development for making sustainable fuels. The dispersed carbonates proved to be highly active and selective catalysts for the reverse water gas shift reaction in which CO 2 is hydrogenated to CO. The dispersed carbonates provide a compelling alternative to conventional metal-based catalysts for reverse water gas shift that could enable new process designs with higher efficiency and lower complexity.

Project FELICIA - A probe to survey the RHIC magnet beampipe diameter for EIC beam screen insertion

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) will reuse many of the existing superconducting (SC) magnets of the RHIC storage rings. To comply with the beamline vacuum requirements in more demanding operational scenarios, the beampipe of the RHIC SC magnets will be equipped with low surface impedance, low secondary electron yield (SEY) beam screens. The installation of these beam screens will be done with the SC magnets as installed today, thus making it a critical operation for a timely EIC installation. The beam screen inner dimensions must be maximized to retain enough aperture to the beam. On the other hand, keeping enough clearance between the screen and the beampipe is critical to ensure a smooth beam screen installation. A survey probe was designed and built to measure the inner diameter of several RHIC SC magnets in-situ and provide critical data for the beam screen design optimization. This paper reports on the design of the probe and the results from the survey campaign.

Develop High-Throughput Workflows for Whole-Genome Sequencing and Insertion Site Screening (CRADA Final Report)

The engineering of microbes for biomanufacturing (e.g. of fuels, chemicals, materials) applications has advanced to a stage where researchers screen genetic libraries with millions of variations each for those with enhanced productivity. This screening, however, can be slow and expensive, as screening individual variants in a high-throughput yet cost-effective manner is challenging. In this project, we aimed to reduce by 3-fold costs associated with the sequencing aspects of the screening process (to determine which genetic variant is responsible for an observed change in productivity), while being able to process over 1,000 samples per batch.

Machine Tool Metrology in support of carbide insert production

In the context of lab modernization, careful consideration must be given to existing technologies, processes, and knowledge to support the ongoing production, maintenance, and improvement of products for the nuclear enterprise. This consideration often involves analyzing manufacturing processes both to pursue modernization or automation and to ensure the ability to maintain manufacturing capability.
